Gun laws have been around since the 1930s starting with the National Firearms Act in 1934. Since then, there has been a long timeline of domestic terrorist attacks and changes in these laws that have consequently altered the way people view the idea of gun control. The issue of gun control is very controversial and involves many political and social perspectives. Gun laws are often debated due to ideas of violence and self defense. The basis of any gun control argument can often be linked to the concept of the second amendment which states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The different interpretations of this amendment results …show more content…
in past years. both parties have found common ground on the subject. Nearly 90% of both parties agree on preventing the mentally from purchasing guns. (Pew Research, 1) Since the presence of more domestic gun related violence being linked with mental illness Americans agree that gun violence is a very big problem and want to work towards amending the issue. Both Parties also agree on banning gun purchases from people on the no fly list (Pew Research, 1) Due to the amount of terror attacks that have occured since the 90s. bipartisan support has grown tremendously. Moreover. Due to many social reasons like school shootings and domestic terror attacks. many Americans are deciding to change their views on gun laws. Since the surge of schools shootings like Columbine. Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook there has been a conversation about preventing tragedies like this from happening. Should school teachers and faculty be allowed to have guns in school as a form of protection? About 65% of Americans think so. (Pew Research, 1) Many schools in across the nation have already had teachers starting to learn gun skill to better protect themselves and their students (Brudin, 1) Kelly Blake who was interviewed by NPR said that the group helping train the teachers started as a response to the Sandy Hook shooting. She adds how she wants to make sure the students are protected at all times (Brudin, 1). It is also noted in the interview that the parents of these children are concerned for the kids safety. they want to know that when they send them off to school that they will not have to face what they see on the news. In addition. the people who support the idea of teachers having guns are those who live in rural areas. This is because in less populated areas the nearest law enforcement can be nearly 40 minutes away. In addition, There is also a widespread
Arming Teachers Is Not The Solution To Stop School Shootings It’s only been about 12 weeks in 2018 and there have been 17 school shootings where students and teachers were killed or injured. This basically means that there’s a shooting every week. Of shootings perpetrated by minors at primary and secondary schools and for which the source of the firearm was known, more than half of the kids obtained the gun at home likely because an adult did not store it locked and unloaded. In all, these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non-fatal gunshot injuries. Because of all these school shootings, there have been people saying that teachers should protect their students, but in teachers’ contract, they didn’t sign up to do that.
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
School shootings are happening much more often, and a lot of schools aren’t doing much about it. From 1999 to 2011 the average school shooting were about two to three a year, now there are close to twenty-five a year. I think that a successful way to keep school shootings from happening would be to arm our teachers. Sure, putting guns in our school could give mischievous kids more of an opportunity to make bad decisions, but I doubt it. If kids knew that there were guns in the school than they wouldn’t want to start a school shooting because they themselves wouldn’t want to get hurt.
Teachers could feel more comfortable in their classrooms if they knew they could protect themselves and their students from violent threats. Schools being a gun free zone are a target for violent
In today’s society, it seems every time we turn the news on there is another school shooting. From the shooting at Columbine in 1999, to Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the most recent shooting at Umpqua Community College less than a month ago, more than 75 people have died in those four shootings alone. School shootings have become a major issue in the United States in the past few years. The argument over if teachers and principals should be able to conceal and carry weapons is of major controversy amongst politicians, school boards, parents, and the general public. Wouldn’t parents want to know their children are protected while at school by teachers carrying concealed weapons?
A controversy that has arisen over the years is gun control, who has the right to have access to guns and how gun control and access tie into violent crimes. After a tragedy, politicians come together to debate gun control policies proposed in response to a shooting. Many people blamed the gun, not the person. Mental health is serious issue, because it leads to a negative public attitude toward person with serious mental illness. However, despite the claims of gun control activists, gun control does not reduce crime; it only leaves law abiding citizens increasingly vulnerable to violent crime, and need to use mental health screening before purchasing a gun/guns.
This should not be a worry for the child or parents but it has to be because at this point any school is a threat. So a possible factor in decreasing shootings is arming teachers, by doing this teachers can fight back instead of shielding or running from the shooter. Reason #2 teachers can defend their students by changing this law and using correct training teachers should be able to carry a weapon. By doing this not only insure safety it will give relief for parents all over the country. This tactic will give school staffs a chance to outnumber a possible shooter.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
In 2011, 10.3 in every 100,000 people in the U.S. were victims of gun related deaths. If the teacher would have had a gun then he/she could have shot the attacker. Teachers should carry handguns because it provides safety for the students and because it is the teacher’s right. Teachers shouldn’t carry handguns because students would fear them. Ken Corbett a clinical assistant professor reported to Arming teachers: three reasons why teachers should not carry handguns in school that, “ When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in.
Not all educators understand the basics of gun safety. Without this proper knowledge, many people can get severely injured or put others in harm. If all teachers wanted to carry a gun, they would go through a lot of classes and it would cost a lot of money. They could become the target of a school shooter and put students at risk for them coming into their classroom. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, is saying no to arming
The Second Amendment says, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Gun rights has become the subject of intense political, social, and cultural battles for much of the last century. The pro-gun right side has asserted that the right to arms was absolute, and that any gun control laws infringed that right (Kopel, 2013). This right has been supported by the Supreme Court who has reinforced what has become the American consensus that the Second Amendment allows the right to keep and bear arms, especially for self-defense, and that it is a fundamental individual
School shootings are extremely uncommon. A recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that only one percent of childhood homicides, a majority of which involve guns, occur in schools(Russo,1). If teachers do become armed, should there be selected teachers? Some teachers may not want to be armed and have the extra responsibility. Teachers should not be armed while at school.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
Since the begining of America, the Founding Fathers wrote the strong-standing Bill of Rights with amendments to protect the country that had just recently won their freedom, but one amendment has been the top theme of controversies for centuries. Gun laws offend the Bill of Rights in so many ways and they prove ineffective. Gun Laws are relevant due to thousands of deaths and self-protection. The argument goes on but without guns there is militia, one of the main intents of the Second Amendment. These simple rules can reduce deaths, proven by millions of influential people.
"In 1990, handguns were used to kill approximately 48 people in Japan, 8 in Great Britain, 34 in Switzerland, 52 in Canada, 58 in Israel, 42 in West Germany and 10,728 in the United States”. For many years, America has been regarded as one of the world’s most perilous and ferocious countries in the world. The death rate caused by active gun shooters in the US is extraordinary: “since 1968, more Americans have died from gunfire than died in … all the wars of this country 's history”. Hence why public ownership of guns should be abolished in the USA. Can you imagine to what extent the death rate in America has increased by now?
