The themes within both stories are centered around knowledge and the amount we intake as a society at a given time. The main reason the societies failed in both stories had to do with them intaking a dangerous amount of knowledge at once. The society in “Fahrenheit 451” took in great amounts of knowledge all at the same time and they became vastly technologically advanced to the point where robots were doing simple jobs for them. When this occurs the people within the society stop thinking for themselves and let the computers do it for them in turn making them “brain dead.” Mildred is an excellent example of this.

Both books raise awareness of the influences government can have on our society and beliefs. Also, in both books the two main characters rose up against this censorship and communism and stood up for their own beliefs instead of those that influenced them. Although the plotlines of “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “Examination Day” differ in many ways, the two share a core theme; nightmarish and dystopian futures. The story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut was first published in “The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction” in 1961. After trying many times to say, “Good morning ladies and gentlemen,” he handed it off to a ballerina who read, “Harrison Bergeron, age 14, has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.” However, in this short story “Harrison Bergeron”, Kurt Vonnegut uses irony, shift and mood, and allusion to illustrated haw society would be if everyone was under the law of equality.

The story, Harrison Bergeron really shows the importance of diversity and for every individual to have a right to be unique. The government trying to make every thing completely fair is actually unfair to people who can 't get any excitement in a world like this. Limiting peoples thinking will also strongly slow any advances in technology, maybe even to a stop, so they might never solve some of the very important problems they face. Same with strength, if someones is in danger to an animal or a malfunctioning machine they will need to be able to escape. So really a world thats completely fair is impossible to create.

"A book is a loaded gun in the house next door" (Bradbury 56). This quote was from Fahrenheit 451, a book where technology takes over a society and diverse knowledge is banned. People who own books are deemed crazy and have everything burned down. It connects to Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, where everyone is equal by bringing everyone down to the lowest average. People in this dystopian society are handicapped mentally and physically and when someone decides to rebel they are met with grave consequences.

Laws are the key to having a well-mannered society. They are created with the intention of bringing good to the civilization. However, even actions with good intentions can end with devastating results. This is what occurs in Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Harrison Bergeron”. “Harrison Bergeron” is about a dystopian- like future that has had citizens stripped of their individuality due to an Amendment.

Harrison Bergeron was a book written in 1961 that portrayed an abnormal child defying the dystopian government; in 2009 a movie was made, based off of it called 2081 that changed the character both physically and morally. The differences in how Harrison Bergeron, the main character, appears in each story changes how the audience perceives his morality. These changes are easily highlighted in Harrison’s age, dialogue, and appearance. The tone of the story is also changed, resulting in similar changes to what the audience interprets. As both stories continue these differences become more and more apparent and by the end, there is a clear split in what the audience ‘takes away’.

The common themes of the stories may include; our reliance on technology can spiral out of control if we let it, knowledge is joyful and painful, and that we can be confined by our own self-censorship. All of these themes are exhibited throughout both stories frequently. Whether it is as Montag has conflict with his wife over books or as Harrison’s parents forget right from wrong in their society. In Fahrenheit 451, their technology definitely gets out of control.

In 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 there are a lot of similarities and differences. The biggest similarity between the books is that they both take place in a dystopian society where the government has total control of the people. However there are many other similarities such as the main characters, desensitized natures, and no privacy. The biggest difference between the books are the endings and how the government regulates the ideas and thoughts of their people.
