Henrietta Lacks Lack Of Education

The scientific community and the media are guilty of viewing Henrietta and her family as abstractions; they did not give the Lacks family a fair trial, they’ve yet to give her family any form of compensation for the success of her cell line, and operated on Henrietta like a science fair project. In the non-fiction narrative The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, written by Rebecca Skloot, it states, “The fact that no one had sued over the growth or ownership of the HeLa cell line, he said, illustrated that patients didn’t mind when doctors took their cells and turned them into commercial products.” (204) This is unfair to the Lacks family because the fraud lawyer, Keenan Kester Cofield, deceived them. Although he is a con artist, he has a wide spectrum of knowledge about law than the Lackses really have about anything; they’ve had little to no education, and they barely knew anything about the HeLa cell line.

Douglas Mawson, Henrietta Lacks, and Phineas Gage: what do all of these people have in common? They have all suffered from adversity throughout their life, but unlike us these three had to face the adversity of excruciating pain and even death. In the article “Into the Unknown” Douglas Mawson had to travel across the arctic wasteland known as antarctica, but Mawson did not know it would be this difficult. Then In the article “Immortal cells, Enduring issues” Henrietta Lacks got sick and eventually died, but not before doctors found out Lacks 's immortal cells would help scientists make cures for many forms of diseases. Finally in the video “The Man with the Hole in His Brain” Phineas Gage had a iron rod blasted through his head and survived.

The story of Henrietta Lacks life and legacy is one that I find heartbreaking but also bittersweet. Learning about her story over 60 years after her death makes me wonder if it were me, how I would feel about what happened. The way I perceive Henrietta was to be a good woman. She was a loyal wife to a man who she knew was unfaithful.

Various points are made throughout the chapters to show the failure of the Maycomb Education system. This is mainly shown through the lack of Miss Caroline’s teaching as she thinks she is qualified to teach. However, not. In many ways, Harper Lee shows the failure of education in the Maycomb county. Lee’s use of vocabulary and quotations depict how and why failure is shown throughout the teachings of Miss Caroline.

The game played by the children Scout, Jem, and Dill in the book To Kill a Mockingbird emphasizes their ignorance and prejudice towards things they don’t understand. Such as when they talk about Boo Radley being dead, “Besides, I don’t think he’s still there. He died years ago and they stuffed him up the chimney.” This dismissal of the possibility that they might feel shame for their actions reflects the theme of ignorance to a tee. The apparent incapability to feel shame is apparent in them when they continue the game in front of all the neighbors, save Nathan Radley.

The Power of HeLa “You make sure Day takes care of them children” stated Henrietta with her last few gasps of breath (Skloot 85). This powerful statement shows just how caring and selfless Henrietta Lacks was. She wanted the best for everyone else, even though, she was on her death bed fighting for her life. She tried to mask the excruciating pain that she was in until it overcame her and she was forced to visit the hospital.

Informed Consent “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” details the injustice and hardships that an African American woman endured when skin color determined the value of a person/during a time dominated by racial segregation/when racial segregation was the law of the land. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 1, 1920, Henrietta Lacks was forced to follow to racial segregation laws that prohibited Blacks from interacting with Whites in such public places as bathrooms, seating areas, colleges, and hospitals. Like all African Americans, she was treated as an inferior member of society due to her skin color. At the age of thirty, Mrs. Lacks had developed cervical cancer and went to Johns Hopkins Hospital, which only treated Blacks at the time.

Education was very crucial to the outcome of both of their lives because it helped Wes become an author and the lack of education among other things led the other Wes to jail and overall was just a big factor of how their lives would play out. From the beginning of the book, it was told how important education was to the author’s family. This was proven by the quote, “My mother decided soon after our move to the Bronx that I was not going to public school. She wasn’t a snob, she was scared.”

Henrietta Lacks, "The Mother of Modern Science" is being honored by the Smithsonian Institute in its National Portrait Gallery. Artist Kadir Nelson will present a portraite of Lacks which will be on display through November 4, 2018. At the age of 31, Lacks, then a mother of five died from cervical canccer. While being treated for the disease, doctors unknowingly to Lacks, took her cells from her body and discovered that lived long and had the ability to reproduce indefinitely while in test tubes.

The main goals of people in societies have been to climb the ladder of social hierarchy; however, many times people don’t realize that they are subconsciously contributing to this prejudice. This theme of ignorance on behalf of discrimination is represented in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Poverty is affecting billions of people around our world and the number is growing with each day. Many people think they can avoid the effects of poverty, but it is something that affects all of our daily lives. Many people see poverty as a person who lacks money, although this is true poverty is caused by many more things than being without money. Just the fact that one in two children live in poverty can help people see clearly the impact it has on our world. Poverty truly does influence the type of care and treatment a person will receive when they need it.

If people are not utilizing education, then the world will become even more corrupt than it already is. Douglass and Malala both utilized their knowledge to be able to explain why they believed that the lack of education should be changed before it was too late for them to be able to persuade others. The significance of education cannot be stated enough, which is an investment to a better future. Getting an education is one of the most powerful things a person can ever obtain. It is crucial to the overall development of the individual and the society as a whole. When individuals do not have the option of getting an education due to the cost of the schools as well as the lack of schools itself. For those living in poverty it can be difficult to earn the same amount of education as other people who are considered middle or high class.
