Comparing the Presidents of the 1930s Two president going neck to neck trying to end the Great Depression, only the best would come up with the solution. Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delanor Roosevelt were the two presidents during the 1930s. The two presidents and their lifestyles seem to be the exact opposites to many. Both men were presidents during one of the most difficult times in American History, the Great Depression. Both doing everything that they thought was necessary during the time, one being a lot more successful than the other.

Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States. He was elected into office seven months before the stock market crashed in 1929. Hoover had to deal with the Great Depression during his Presidency and he was not re-elected, getting beat by Franklin D. Roosevelt. I believe that Herbert Hoover was an okay president, with more bad things during his Presidency than good. He was good because he got the Americans to believe him at the beginning of the Depression and he made the “Star Spangled Banner” our national anthem.

Hoover became the scapegoat for the Depression and was badly defeated in 1932. In the 1930's he became a powerful critic of the New Deal, warning against tendencies toward statism. The Depression got worse throughout Hoover’s term in office, and critics increasingly portrayed him as indifferent to the suffering of the American people. By the time of the 1932 presidential election, Hoover had become a deeply unpopular–even reviled–figure across much of the country.

“He is remembered for transforming the Bureau into a professional and investigative police force” (Munro). Hoover had always been an intelligent man in high school and years after that. After high school, he wanted to get into politics to work for The Library of Congress and attended classes at George Washington University Law School. He then later obtained a position in The Justice Department during World War I. John Edgar Hoover plays an important role on what America is today because he created a various amount of advancements in criminal studies and helped generate bright and new ways to keep Americans safe.

John Edgar Hoover was born in Washington, D.C. on January 1st, 1885 (John). In high school, he stayed busy leading the student cadet corps and was a part of a debate team (Maurer 77). Being born into a Presbyterian family, Hoover taught Sunday school at his local Presbyterian

President Hoover underestimated the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, and started out assuring the citizens that this would be over in 60 days. When the depression got worse, he started a government financed program called the Hoover Dam. The problem of that was Hoover didn’t have money to pay for the program. Eventually the “Bonus Army Fiasco” happened, removing Herbert Hoover from presidency. People elected Roosevelt as president of the United States.

Although Roosevelt’s administration was not very effective in immediately ending the Great Depression, it left a lasting effect on the role of the federal government by creating

 Hoover is often blamed for not doing anything to end the Great Depression, but he actually did try to use the government to create infrastructure projects, thus creating jobs. Like the Hoover Dam and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to try to end the Depression. There are two major differences between their approaches.  One is that President Roosevelt was willing to do more than President Hoover to combat the Great Depression.  Roosevelt was willing to let the government become more involved in the economy.

Herbert Hoover’s Presidency Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first president of the United States was very disappointing according to many people. Hoover had a significant impact on World War 1. For example, during World War 1, he organized a peace army that saved 350 million lives from starvation and disease. This is one of the many reasons why people chose Hoover to become the president. Herbert Hoover had a disappointing presidency because he did not overcome the Great Depression and the Stock Market Crash during his presidency.

President Herbert Hoover made efforts to try to fix the great depression. Many people disliked him as a president and complained he didn’t even care. However he at least tired to help people recover from the great depression. Some policies he created were the Hoover Moratorium, the Federal Home Loan Bank Act of 1932, and the Great New Deal. Hoover created the Hoover Moratorium to end the war debts however it didn’t help with the economic crisis.

The Great Depression was a time during 1929 to 1939, It was the longest lasting economic disaster. The two presidents in term during this crisis, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, approached this problem in different ways. Hoover’s idea on this was to have private citizens help each others, while Roosevelt believed the government should take care of its people with social programs. Looking at these ideas in more depth we can infer ways our country should go. Herbert Hoover served as president during 1929 to 1933.
