Historical Fiction In The Book Thief

A novel can influence our understanding of history. I strongly agree with this statement. A historical novel is a novel that has as its setting a period of history and attempts to convey personal experiences and historical events to historical fact. The novel Briar Rose (1992) written by Jane Yolen is an example of a historical novel. Briar Rose influences our understanding of the Holocaust and allows a reader to gain an understanding of how a human who went through the Holocaust deals with and shares their experiences.

The novel follows the life of a young German girl, Liesel Meminger as she becomes the book thief. Throughout Liesel’s life, she faces many battles, yet none are as invasive as those of Hans Hubermann, a stubborn yet fearless man.

Zusak’s purpose of the story is to describe life growing up in Germany during World War II. He uses a serious tone to describe his reader's rhetorical devices that can have a deeper meaning. This can be demonstrated through the use of Symbolism, Imagery, and even Liesel herself.

Max Vandenburg appeared at 33 Himmel street looking for refuge from the German authorities, in the home of his late father 's friend, Hans Hubermann. Rosa and Hans took Max into their home, fed him, and nursed him back to health after he fell ill due to the severe cold in the dark hubermann basement. The story is about the book thief, Liesel Meminger, a German girl in age of 9, who was sent to her foster family, Rosa and Hans by her real mother due to some difficulties.

The Book Thief was one of my favorite books that I have read so far, the author, Markus Zusak used imagery and used foreshadowing to prepare the reader for more important events. The author switches from the first person and third person point of view and how it gave you different perspectives. In the book, there's a sad tone and some humor in the book as well. The author uses flashbacks to inform the reader of previous events.

Liesel and her father’s relationship grows each and every day they are together. She feels comforted by his presence. “Liesel observed the strangeness of her foster father’s eyes. They were made of kindness, and silver… Upon seeing those eyes, understood that Hans Hubermann was worth a lot,” (Zusak Ch 6).

Despite her low spirits, she quickly makes friends with Rudy Steiner and learns to love her adoptive parents, Hans and Rosa. Hans develops a close and loving relationship with Liesel, who sees him as her support and guidance throughout her adolescent years.
