The Fresno Hmong community is an ethnic and cultural community. In Fresno, Hmong American is one of the largest ethnic groups. The Hmong are refugees. The United States recruited the Hmong to fight in the secret war against the Pathet Lao. After the United States withdrew from the war, thousands of Hmong were killed by the Pathet Lao or were forced to abandon their homes, lands, and livestock in Laos and fled to the refugee camps in Thailand. This resulted in the immigration of the Hmong settling in the United in the 1970’s. Hmong families have been able to adapt themselves to new changes and new environments. Through perseverance, they were able to survive when they were forced to abandon their villages in Laos to settle down in the mountains of Laos, escape to Thailand by crossing over the Mekong River, and when they immigrated to the United States in fear of persecution. The need and problem in the Fresno Hmong community is mental health and substance abuse. The mental health rate among Hmong has been found to be high compare to other Western population. Hmong tend to use substance like opium, alcohol and illegal drugs to cope. They had their own traditional cultural values compared to the mainstream culture. Hmong refugee parents grew up in a different time and treated their children how they were but in American, it conflicted with the mainstream culture and law that confused many Hmong children and pressured many to balance both cultural difference. Being new in America with very little English and new environment, many Hmong youth was picked up and dealt with discrimination that contributed to the formation of Hmong gangs. Many Hmong youth had to rely in joining gangs to protect themselves and find a sense of belonging due to misunderstanding with parents and the cultural differences. Many Hmong children lacked proper adult guidance, community support, and accessible resources to assist them growing up and therefore, had to rely in themselves and other who can relate.
However, I personally think it is wrong to convert to Christianity just to run away from what you are and I believe most Hmong family do so just for that reason. The culture is so rich and beautiful that it hurts to see a Hmong child not being able to speak Hmong. You identify yourself as Hmong; you are Hmong-American, but you can’t speak the language. I am ashamed that the parents of the child didn’t teach their children the language.
When people ask me, “Camille, where are you from?” I answer, without hesitation, “Stockton, California.” Yet, I am not a true “Stocktonian.” Yes, I have resided here for the past five years, but I still regard myself to be a “Moragan.” For eight years, the hills of Moraga, California was a place to call my home.
Many Chinese people came to America to seek work on the railroad and other places. The cheap labor they provided angered the European immigrants, and tensions grew between the Americans and Chinese-Americans. An act was passed that stopped the immigration of Chinese people to America and the government forced them to wear identification badges at all times. It was very difficult to be of this race during this time period. Therefore, Chinese immigrants faced many adversities through discrimination in the work force, government, and daily life.
I believe, that if I were to be displaced to Hmong the adaption would be the same challenging experience because I would have to adapt to their style they live and their traditions. I would have to remove all my habits I have from living in the United States and create habits to living in Hmong. In the text (Hensil 2010) it stated that in Hmong
These communities were taught to utilize and take advantage of the education system, the small businesses, and workforce allowing them to be one of the fastest ethnic group with growing economic status. The Hmong people is nowhere near catching up to these ethnic groups because it has only been now, first generation Hmong Americans that are starting the trend of maintain an education and ending the poverty
Mental health is a state of psychological well-being. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." (Organization, WHO 2001) However, cultural differences, race, ethnicity, personal background, subjective assessment, and socioeconomic status all affect how mental health is defined. This variation in definitions of mental health between different sects of our society further causes drift in methods of treatment, and may cause the burden of mental health to be greater on some cultures.
Hmong Community on Child Maltreatment Child maltreatment happens to any child regardless of their ethnicity groups, age, education, financial status, or living condition. Among the race/ethnicities in the United States, Asian has the lowest rate of living in poverty and the lowest rate of child abuse (IRP, 2012). Understanding the impact that poverty has on child maltreatment challenged the writer to look at a certain ethnicity group. The Hmong community is a group of people that can relate to both poverty and child maltreatment. Studies had shown that poverty has an impact on child abuse, yet there are not many reports made from the Hmong community in regards to child maltreatment.
Currently, the population of people with Chinese descent in America reaches to 1.2%, which accounts to an estimated 3.8 million people. This all started with the Gold Rush, which let two completely opposite cultures that had never interacted before encounter their differences. The religious and cultural exchanges between the American and Chinese societies occurred with many difficulties of acceptance and tolerance, resulting in the diverse American society of present day. After differences between the two cultures were overcome, the Gold Rush opened the doors of exploration for many generations of not only Chinese immigrants, but all Asian ethnicities to follow. Many immigrants would later follow in their footsteps to find what America has to offer them.
Native Americans Native Americans are very different from other tribes. They eat, live, dress and do many things differently. The things I’m going to be talking about in my interesting paper is What they eat? What they wear? Where they live?
The history of migrant farm workers in California has changed extensively over time, especially under the influence of outside factors such as war and the desire to emigrate. Migrant workers, not just farm workers, have been involved in various occupations, from fishing to forestry, yet the agricultural field remains the most common (“Migrant Farm Labor”). Agricultural activities were once performed by Native Americans before Europeans established a colonial presence. During the existence of slavery in the U.S., it is believed by environmental historians that slaves applied their techniques in agriculture to those of American techniques, allowing them to rise against their owners with a better understanding of the landscape of the plantations
Conveying Aboriginal Canadian Culture into the Classroom When I enter the world as a certified teacher, I plan to teach in elementary schools. As I am in the primary/junior program here at Lakehead, I am studying to be able to teach grades from kindergarten to grade six. Although I am certainly not picky, I would prefer to teach grades three and up as I have had more experience working with children of that age in and outside of the school environment. While it may seem unorthodox, I would prefer to remain in Thunder Bay as I continue my teaching career.

During the late 19th century and early 20th century, about one million immigrants from 90 countries were detained at Angel Island when they arrived in the United States of America. Among the immigrants, many of them were Asian. According to the article, those immigrants were likely to had a terrible experience during the time they were captured. In the 1600’s part of the tribe had split off from the Hidatsa and began their move, and later on in history they were known as the Crow. (2) The Crow Indian Reservation is in southeastern Montana. Crow Indians are a tribe of the northern Great Plains of the United States.
