Homeland Security Mission Statement

The Joint Terrorism Task Forces are made up of various law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and state and local law enforcement agencies. They are responsible for investigating and preventing terrorist activities, both domestically and internationally. Since the attacks made on September 11, 2001, the Joint Terrorism Task Forces have expanded and evolved to meet the evolving threats and terrorist landscape. The DHS Fusion Centers were established in 2003 after the 9/11 attacks to help with information sharing between federal, state, and local agencies to preventing terrorism and other criminal activities.

Homeland security and other agencies can also push down information in the same manor. Relevant information to CBP gets sent down the chain and it is far more efficient with receiving information in a timely manner.

In accordance with the 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review, the terrorist threat is one of the prevailing challenges that pose a significant risk level to the United States as well as to American citizens abroad and many U.S. allies (Department of Homeland Security, 2014). In the United States, the Federal Government assumes the responsibility for leading the efforts that seek to manage the risk level of the terrorist threat. That is why the Federal Government has created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), whose main mission is to prevent terrorist threats by managing their risk levels (DHS, 2014). Since the terrorist threat is a very complex threat to manage for one entity or agency alone, the DHS is able to accomplish its main mission by working in partnerships with many federal agencies; State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (SLLTT) Governments; private and public organizations; international partners; and communities all across the United States (DHS, 2014). In all of those partnerships, the Federal Government through the DHS plays a leadership role

(NPR, 2014, para. 13) This department has many responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is grouping the condition of threats in America. These acts made America safer.

Congress gave many responsibilities for this department to handle, like the water system of the United States capital, handle the expansion into the west, take care of the hospitals, universities, handle the affairs with the Native Americans living in the United States, as well protect public lands. These were some of the purposes of why this department was created by Congress. It sole purpose was to handle the nation's internal affairs and make sure the people living are happy and taken well cared for. Some examples are the Interior's Mexican Boundary Commission, which created the international borders with Mexico. This was to help both nations on where their nation ends and so both of their military and police forces know where to stop at and not cross the border.

It is no secret that the United States was completely unprepared for an attack of the magnitude of the attack on the Twin Towers. The U.S is protected by Department of Homeland Security (DHS), it was formed just right after the attack. FEMA did not play any role during the Boston Bombings of 2013 emergency response (George et al, p.29). However, it would be naïve to assume that FEMA and DHS are today not up to their task of preparedness and response to emergencies despite the obstacles. It is important to point out that, the evolution has been met with a number of challenges. In as much as it has seen an increase in the number of actors, the conflicts within has affected the end result of emergency response. The DHS and FEMA for example, these two entities and their competition for authority meant that there was an overall lack of preparedness to counter Hurricane Sandy.

Since the birth of the United States a main goal of the nation has been to avoid tyranny. The framers, fresh out of what they believed to be tyrannical rule under the British, made every effort to remove it from existence in their new country.   As time has gone on America, as a nation, has drifted away from ideas generated by the likes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and shifted in another direction due to unforeseen circumstances such as terrorism.   When the United States of America was established it was designed to be a place of tolerance and opportunity.

Although, this department does a lot of good in securing this nation it seems there is still a lot of controversy over this department. Some people have a problem with their spending considering America is already trillions of dollars in debt, there are much more other controversial issues with this department too. Just like any other department, the Department of Defense has it’s goods and bads. The Department of Defense is a department of the executive branch.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was founded in 2002 in response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to prevent any future threat of terrorism that even slightly presented danger to American soil. Congress passed the Homeland Security act in 2002 which absorbed every agency at the time who was working in, “Response to disasters caused by terrorism, natural hazards, or technological hazards” (Haddow 331). Among other agencies, the DHS assumed responsibility over other agencies who presided over the borders and ports as well as those responsible for immigration and citizenship.
