How Did Connecticut Develop A New England Colony

With this, Governor Trumbull of Connecticut wrote a letter in 1774 to the governor of Pennsylvania giving him the “official information concerning the steps which had been taken by Connecticut” to establishing this settlement. One such step was annexing Westmoreland County to Litchfield County of Connecticut, which “stimulated immigration, and settlers from Connecticut flocked into the territory.” Some towns that were founded by Connecticut settlers in Pennsylvania that were in Connecticut’s Westmoreland County include: Wilkes-Barre; Nanticoke, later Hanover; Pittstown, later Pittston; Plymouth; and the Forty Township, later changed to Kingstown and then to Kingston. With all of these legal procedures that Connecticut went through in establishing their settlement and the fact that Connecticut had a county and towns in Pennsylvania, Connecticut should have received the disputed land from the Trenton

The Pennsylvania Quaker beginning was different than other colonies due to the fact the leader was not a follower. William Penn, the recipient of Pennsylvania, was not scared to take a different path. Penn's ownership of the Pennsylvania colony already distinguished him from other colonies such as the Carolina's, New York and New Jersey. He was the only colonist leader who received the land by being repaid a debt by Charles II. Pennsylvania was the largest amount of landed of the colonies at this time.

It is well known among historians that William Penn sought a peaceful partnership with the Native Americans that were in Pennsylvania at the time. Dreaming of a “Holy Experiment,” Penn wished for a colony that promoted religious freedom with good relations among the settlers and Native Americans. This can be demonstrated with the various letters, deeds, and laws written by Penn, all respecting the Native American people. One can clearly see that he wanted diplomacy as a top priority for his colony. One letter available is the Letter from William Penn to the Kings of the Indians in Pennsylvania.

Over the years, Quakers became more accepted, and were actually admired for their honesty and simple living. That changed during the American Revolution, when Quakers refused to pay military taxes or fight in the war. Some Quakers were exiled because of that position. In the early 19th century, Quakers rallied against the social abuses of the day: slavery, poverty, horrible prison conditions, and mistreatment of Native Americans.

Another idea that made Pennsylvania into a frontier religiously/politically was that Penn also incorporated his ideas of religious toleration and “natural right” into the founding of his colony. Pennsylvania offered religious tolerance of all religions and all individuals were given rights. During his time in Pennsylvania, Penn wrote the Charter of Liberties which told the world that Pennsylvania was “free to the people under it, where laws rule, and the people are a party to those laws.” Penn gave personal rights to everyone including Natives and Negros. All other colonies offered one or the other: tolerance or equal rights.

The thirteen colonies, which were divided into 3 regions, were all different and unique in many ways. However, the diversity among the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies is perhaps what made them so distinctive. The differences between these three regions affected the way they lived, but later, they gained knowledge by analyzing their mistakes and differences. Although these three regions only had a few things in common, it was the differences among them that helped them grow and learn from one another.

Although all the colonists all came from England, the community development, purpose, and societal make-up caused a distinct difference between two distinct societies in New England and the Chesapeake region. The distinctions were obvious, whether it be the volume of religious drive, the need or lack of community, families versus single settlers, the decision on minimal wage, whether or not articles of agreements were drawn for and titles as well as other social matters were drawn, as well as where loyalties lay in leaders. New England was, overall, more religious than the Chesapeake region. Settlers in New England were searching relief for religious persecution in Europe. Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics were coming in droves to America searching for an opportunity to have religious freedom.

New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.

Amid the late 16th century and into the 17th century, European nations quickly inhabited the new lands called the Americas. England sent out multiple groups to two regions in the eastern coast of North America. Those areas were called the Chesapeake and the New England locations. Later, in the end of the1700 's, these two locations would combine to create one nation. However originally both areas had very different and distinctive identities.

The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.

Puritans (church members) were Calvinist who wanted to purify the Church of England they confine church membership to persons they believed to be “saved”, the bible was the final authority. Puritans settler in different parts all over North America, John Winthrop writing the Mayflower compact gave a significant power to Puritans in the New World looking for “a city upon a hill” leaving a political structure over New England in which the puritan had power over the colonies. Within fifty year since the founding of New England the whites surrounded the ancestral lands of the Indians, Metacomet (King Philip) was the son of Massasoit who signed the treaty with the Pilgrims, Philip concerned by the impact of the lands and Europeans culture and religion

The British colonies in the Chesapeake region and those of the New England region were both similar yet different in certain ways. One because both the colonist that settled there were looking for new opportunities. However, it was mostly second son aristocrats, which means the first born usually inherits the better half of the father’s riches. Their lives in England had either been mistreated or they were unable to flourish economically. Regardless of whether they were searching the land for expansive homesteads, religious freedom, or exchanging and merchant opportunities, the colonist in both regions were searching for another land in the New World.

There were long growing seasons. Also, the Southern Colonies had long plains, some hilly regions, long rivers, and low, flat farmland. Like the Southern and Middle Colonies, the New England Colonies had some hills, but that is the only similarity of climate and geography between all of these Colonies. The New England Colonies had short and mild summers and the winters were long and cold. They also had limited

The climate in the Middle region is gentler than in the New England. Comparatively, they also have four seasons, however, the winters are not as cold as in New England. The summers are not as hot as in the southern region.
