America would be nothing had it not been for borrowed cultures, practices, and cuisines. Throughout history, the United States had been built upon diversity and grew through innovation. One will see hundreds of fast food chains all across the country today, however, most items on those menus did not originate from America. Most of them, if not all of them, were borrowed from other countries. Staple foods such as french fries, pizza, and hamburgers that are seen as “American dishes” actually came from European countries instead. Foreign countries have stereotyped America as unhealthy and lazy in the culinary industry, which, was due to the creation of fast food chains. Starting in the 17th century and developing to present-day America, the United …show more content…
The reason peasants chose it was because the ingredients did not cost much. The only ingredients they needed to make their pizzas were flour, cheese, butter, and oil. With the help of Queen Maria Carolina, pizza began to rise in popularity. One day, she requested a homemade pizza from her royal chef, Raffaele Esposito. Esposito carried out her order and created a pizza resembling the Italian flag. The pizza had the red portion made from tomatoes, the white portion made of mozzarella, and the green portion made with …show more content…
The first pizzeria in America was created in 1905 by a man named Gennaro Lombardi. It was located on 53 ½ Spring Street, New York City in Little Italy. Pizza was a big hit in America for a variety of reasons, one being its versatility. Over the years, different styles of pizza emerged. Thin crust, or New York style, was a classic Italian style of pizza. It was a skinny crust, with a thin layer of sauce, and light toppings, ranging from plain cheese to toppings such as pepperoni or olives. Another style was deep dish, or Chicago style. This had more bread and sauce, thicker toppings, and more cheese than the New York style. Sicilian style, or thick crust, was one more style of pizza. It had a puffy crust, but still lighter toppings like the New York style. Along with these styles, a variety of toppings on pizza added to the ability to choose exactly what one would like. What also won people over about pizza was the fact that it was so convenient. Besides sit-down pizzerias, many started to give customers the option to take their pizza, or even to have it delivered, home. This gave people both the ability to get just what they wanted, and to not have to leave home. A large characteristic of being successful in America was convenience, as shown with the success of fast food. The casualness of pizza was appealing to people all over America, as well. Pizza has been enjoyed by people of all ages for decades, specifically
In David Freedman’s essay How Junk food Can End Obesity, Freedman makes the claim to policy arguing that instead of demonizing processed foods, Americans should instead support the idea and production of healthier processed and junk foods. He calls on the public to recognize that while many products on the market these days are labeled as “wholesome” and “healthy”, consumers should learn to become aware of the fat and calorie content in these products because many times they have the same- if not more- fat and calorie contents as that of a typical Big Mac or Whopper. In his essay, Freedman primarily places blame on the media and the wholesome food movement for the condemnation of the fast and processed food industries saying, “An enormous amount of media space has been dedicated to promoting the notion that all processed food, and only processed food, us making us sickly and overweight” (Freedman), he further expresses that this portrayal of the
Ever since these immigrants came, they faced racism, xenophobia, and since America had everything - meat, cheese, vegetables - that these countries couldn’t afford, the recipes were forced to be changed. Thus, fast food was created due to the demand of these products. For example, Taco Bell was created as a fast food restaurant alongside the invention of the taco fryer for the tacos to be made. And Chef Boyardee, let’s not forget him. And meat was

When I went to a McDonald's in Italy a couple summers ago, I was shocked at the prices, since one McChicken cost about 3 dollars just by itself without fries and a drink, not to mention I barely saw any fast-food restaurants even after a week there. Unlike in America, Italians prefer foods like noodles, and obviously pizza, but everything is smaller in quantity, such as the pizza. Each individual person orders one baby sized pizza just for themselves with whatever toppings they want on it, but in the U.S, people order a massive pizza where you eat as much as you wish, and unfortunately, because it tastes good, people tend to think, just one more slice until it's mostly done which doesn't happen in other countries, especially since fast-foods are addictive in nature as well which explains their immense popularity in the United States, since not many people say “I'm hungry, let's go to the grocery store so I can cook”. My cousin, because of how they get small individual pizzas for themselves believed that one whole large pizza would be for just one person, which may be one of the many reasons why they actually viewed Americans as fat and lazy, which unfortunately is becoming true the more we rely on fast
America is often criticized for not having its own culture. That could not be farther from the truth. American culture is based around three main components, diversity, freedom and entertainment. One thing that is inarguably American is the cheeseburger. None of its components are original (except maybe American cheese) but the combination of all of them is original.
20th Century – The pizza chains that have now spread around the globe emerged, most notably Dominos, founded in 1960 in in Ann Arbor Charter Township, Michigan and its rival Pizza Hut, founded two years earlier in Wichita, Kansas. Why Pizza is Still is Popular as Ever The popularity of pizza hasn’t been subject to as much debate as its origins, though why pizza is still as popular as ever is an interesting discussion topic, one that will likely spur as much debate as where and when it was invented. The convenience of ordering pizza surely has something to do with its enduring popularity – ordering pizza delivery online is wonderfully convenient – though there has to be to more its popularity than the convenience of dialling a short number with a catchy ring to it or ordering online as is increasingly popular. Is it the simplicity of a traditional-style pizza – traditional pizzas have few toppings – cooked in a wood-fired oven, the overwhelming nature of a pizza heavily (over)loaded with toppings that often amounts to a mountain of gut-busting pleasure, or is it the inimitable flavour that arises from that heavenly combination of dough, sauce and
However, deep dish pizza has been a delicious treat that has been consumed now for many years and shows no sign of slowing down: though it is most often associated with Chicago where it was born, it is served all over the Midwest. A deep dish pizza is a type of pizza that is a hybrid between much older, traditional recipes and old American traditions for pie: it is typically set in a deep round pan and baked in an oven until bubbling hot. It is so gooey and hot when it is served that it is the only variety of American style pizza that is consumed with a knife and fork, so take care and enjoy it with a pint of beer with some friends.
