I. Questions about the Education Reform:
1. The major goals of Horace Mann were to make sure everyone in the U.S is able to be educated in nicer, better public schools, and the public school could have higher teacher qualifications. He also planned to make the school grant a better pay for teacher’s salary, and the school was able to have newer buildings and environments. Horace Mann also had the purpose to let the school provide better curriculums for the students. Besides, he wanted the education in the U.S could be equally spread and diffused. 2. Horace Mann felt education was important because education could provide people opportunities to prevent being permanently poor, and if education could be spread out all over the country

The first reason that explain why Mann thought education was important from his own words was “If one class posses all the wealth and the education, while the residue of society is ignorant and poor, it matters not by what name the relation between them may be called: the latter, in fact and in truth, will be the servile and subjects of the former”. The second reason was “if education be equally diffused, it will draw property after it by the strongest of all attractions; for such a thing never did happen, and never can happen, as that an intelligent and practical body of men should be permanently poor”. The third reason was “The spread of education, by enlarging the cultivated class or caste, will open a wider area over which the social feelings will expand; and, if this education should be universal and complete, it would do more than all things else to obliterate factitious distinctions in society”. The fourth reason was “but if such a Republic be devoid of intelligence, such a Republic with all its noble capacities for beneficence, will rush with the speed of a whirlwind to an ignominious end; and all good men of after-times would be fain to weep over its downfall, did not their scorn and contempt at its folly and its wickedness, repress all sorrow for its fate”. 4. It was difficult for Mann to convince some people for the needs for publicly funded education because lots of people had the belief that public schooling was only for the poor, and the wealthy people were not willing to pay higher tax in order to help the public
Massachusetts reformer Horace Mann led the charge for the country's first statewide public school. Mann wrote that education “is the great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance-wheel of the social machinery.” He also said that universal education would allow the United States to maintain a democracy of all Americans, he thought, “must, if citizens of a Republic, understand something of the true nature and functions of the government under which they live.” The public school system became a reality and they were free too. Most young citizens can now go to school poverty free.
This method shows how the program is helped people out of education and finding jobs. This shows how the reformers had goals and method for assisting the poor. In conclusion, reformers had goals and methods to achieve their goals. The reformers goal were women suffrage and assisting the poor.
Programs like this and a new desire for education, promised to bring much change to the current education system. A major theme of education during this time period was the expansion of education. While efforts were being made to expand the education system’s “audience”, efforts were also being made to expand schools westward. The government began surveying lands and setting up schools inside them. They wanted to spread education to the entire country.
Mann’s contributions to the improvements of schools and teacher training played a crucial role in the educational process, however; curriculum was the next important
He created the common school movement, ensuring that every child could receive a basic education funded by local taxes. This lead
As a young American myself, I am grateful and know that I have benefited from Horace Mann’s driving spirit for equal knowledge. Currently at my high school, many students do not try very hard at their studies because they do not realize the great opportunity they have and think of school as a daily routine task. One day, they will realize how obliged to be part of a learning environment. That is why creating a national holiday for education is essential to the United States and for the young generation and people. I am an honor student and I am studying for my upcoming state tests so that I can attend a university in Florida as well as searching for my career.
One problem still stood and that was that many children did not have any access to education. A Massachusetts lawyer by the name of Horace Mann, led movements to try to create new common schools for all children. Mann believed that available public education for children of every social class would revive social equality and give them an equal chance to excel in social mobility. These schools would also keep society in order by disciplining children and building their individual character and teaching them to obey authority. By 1860, with the help from generous labor unions, factory owners and middle-class reformers, every northern state had school systems for all children of every social
Reform is a way to change something in order to improve it. The Reform movement of the 1800s changed the United States of America in education, alcohol use, prison conditions and treatment of the mentally ill. The elementary education reform movement particularly was successful in advancing children’s education through strict laws, individual reform leaders and advancing subject material or the environment in which they were taught. Before men and women really focused on reforming elementary school education, the subjects taught, environment and focus on schooling was poor. There was a big focus on religion, solely learning for religious purposes.
One person that I felt had a significant impact on education was Horace Mann. Mann was a politician who was asked to become secretary of education. While, he did not have a background in education once he became secretary he achieved several accomplishments to better public schools. Mann wanted to create a common schools, so that there was a common standard being taught across all schools. He tried to standardize everything, from the types of chairs to the books that should be in schools.
Through the education, prison, and Temperance movements, the Antebellum time period prior to the Civil War introduced many democratic ideals that we now hold dear, ranging from public education to fair mental healthcare. Horace Mann, the leader of the education reforms, sought to provide public education to all citizens, as his state of Massachusetts was heavily focused on enhancing education, according to Document #3. Since before the United States became its own independent nation, Puritan beliefs included an emphasis on education, a clear precursor to this time period. From the implementation of schools with the Old Deluder Act, to the current education reform, the education system was in need of a reform in order to be made available to all — Mann’s main point he was trying to convey. As with the Temperance Movement, the banning of alcohol sparked wild controversy.
It was called The Common School Period because education transformed from a completely private, costly thing to a luxury that was available to the common masses. With public education, social class separation was not as extreme as it had been in the past, but still continued to occur in some areas. The people in the lower classes originally gained minimal instruction, such as learning how to read and write, calculate, and receive religious instruction, while the upper classes were more entitled to pursuing a higher education in secondary schools and even continue their schooling at the university level. Though some social class separation still lingered, education was made mostly to fit common standards. In 1837, Horace Mann, one of the great education reformers, created grade levels, common standards to reach those said grade levels, and mandatory attendance.
Many people all over the world have a lack of education. Without a proper education, it will be difficult to have a successful life unless you have a certain skill. Throughout history, it has been proven that so many people are being manipulated just because they think it’s the right thing. The people who are rich and powerful have control and influence on others and usually have a special talent, but the majority of successful people is in their position because of knowledge. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, most of the animals do not have the ability to learn, which allows them to be manipulated.
Clearly, the introduction of public education has had immense impact on American society. With it 's establishment historically, came a substantial accrual in the overall education level of the citizens of the United States. Recently, public education has become perceived as being the “standard” way to educate students. However, the history of public education is rather brief when compared with other education methods, there are numerous misconceptions regarding the quality of public education, and there are many detrimental effects on individuals and families, which are often overlooked in light of a handful of touted benefits.
There has been a multitude of famous individuals that have changed the course of human history over the years. With their work being the source of inspiration of many to simply having a likeable, repeatable demeanor, there is no doubt that to be regarded in that special collective of individuals. One of the most famous civil rights leader that advocated for 13 years, Martin Luther King Jr., discertation called, “The Purpose of Education,” that brings awareness to the importance of education and its overall relevance in tepid year of 1947. Dr. King brings clarity to his opinion in the beginning of his paragraph stating, “It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: the one is utility and
The significance of education cannot be stated enough, which is an investment to a better future. Getting an education is one of the most powerful things a person can ever obtain. It is crucial to the overall development of the individual and the society as a whole. When individuals do not have the option of getting an education due to the cost of the schools as well as the lack of schools itself. For those living in poverty it can be difficult to earn the same amount of education as other people who are considered middle or high class.
