Various contributions to medicine were made from Louis Pasteur’s findings in immunology, medical microbiology, and chemistry. Immunology is the science that involves the way one’s body defends itself from diseases and infections. Pasteur’s findings in immunology lead to gaining more knowledge to prevent diseases in order to benefit the society in the long run. He founded a vaccine for chicken cholera and it resulted in creating immunity. The chickens were given an old culture of the germs and became immune to the disease. After this discovery, Pasteur concluded that their bodies created a defense against the cholera culture. In addition, Pasteur applied his knowledge of vaccinations to finding a cure for anthrax bacilli. His studies for anthrax vaccines consisted of, preparing cultures of the bacillus after determining the conditions that led to the organism’s weakness. The vaccines also had different properties to help find the most suitable vaccine for the infected organisms. Therapeutic vaccines were introduced in Pasteur’s studies of rabies. Jonas Salk was an American physician, immunologist and a virologist, someone who studies viruses. He set some goals for himself: “To establish an institute that would explore questions about the basic principles in life,” and “to make it possible for biologists and others to work together in a collaborative environment that would encourage them to consider the wider implications of their discoveries for the future of humanities (www.salk.edu).” Because of his goal, that he clearly stated, Salk became referred to as the “Father of Biophilosophy.” He was also named as the “Father of Biophilosophy” because he also didn’t patent his vaccine. Beginning his life in the commune of Dole, located in France, Louis was now a part of the Pasteur family. He was described as an average student by his teachers in his early times, although having an artistic talent.

Immunizations can save a child’s life; due to the medical advances that have taken place, kids are now protected from many illness/ diseases. At one point in time, Polio was a horrible illness that is now preventable by simply receiving a shot (USDHHS, n.d.). Immunizations protect not only the individual receiving the vaccination, but others as well. Certain individuals are not suitable for specific vaccinations, therefore, if everyone else has the vaccination, the people who cannot are more likely to be safe from the illness (USDHHS, n.d). Generally, immunizations are safe, effective, cheaper in the long run, and can save families time.

Marylou in this book focused on not only Louis Pasteur’s inventions but his way of thinking and figuring things out. While reading this book I have realized that louis Pasteur has went through a lot over the years of his life.
Globally, vaccination has proved as a tremendous asset in curbing the spread of communicable diseases. Communicable disease such as smallpox, which is highly infectious, was thoroughly eradicated in the 20th century with the help of vaccines. Other notorious contagious diseases, such as measles, polio and rubella are also in the brink of eradication in this modern age through the widespread application of vaccines. By implementing mandatory vaccination, it’s not impossible to achieve that due to vaccination preventing new human carriers of disease from appearing. As vaccination prevents an individual from contracting a particular disease, the individual will not be a carrier for that disease, thus limiting the spread of the disease to others.
