How Did Rosecrans Move Into Chattanooga

The Confederate invasion caught the Union forces off guard. The Union found themselves scrambling to defend New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Colonel Canby decided to reorganize his forces in the area and consolidate at Fort Craig, a main supply depot and fortified position in the area. Col. Canby successfully defends Fort Craig but in the First major battle after the confederate invasion, the Battle of Valverde, the Union loses the city of Albuquerque.

However, when Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter in 1861, Captain Grant heard the need and decided to return to service. He was promoted to Brigadier General as the war began. He proved himself through many different battle and strategies, such as the battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. Both of these victories were integral to the war effort and are considered the earliest significant

On July 2, 1863, which was the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, we attacked Wilcox’s Alabama Brigade under General Winfield Hancock’s orders. There were 5 to 1 odds against us. We kept the Confederates off of Cemetery Ridge. About 215 people died, including our commander Colonel William Colvill, and our flag fell 5 times. We were reinforced by Company F the next day.

This key battle of the Civil War was led by General Samuel R. Curtis of the Union and General Earl Van Dorn of the Confederates. To begin with, before the battle of Pea Ridge the Union had a strong defensive position in Arkansas near LIttle Sugar Creek. The Confederate forces had commanded General Van Dorn to destroy the Union’s position at the Pea Ridge in Arkansas. General Van Dorn came up with a plan to attack the Union soldiers by marching around the Unions location and attacking rear sides. This battle was an attempt to take a strong defensive position for the confederates that would leave the Confederate army with a strong position through Arkansas and Missouri.

General McClellan made the South flee causing the Union to win another battle. In Mississippi General Grant led another battle to victory with the surrender of the Confederacy. General Sherman led the Union army in Savannah and destroyed the cities and broke the spirit of the Confederacy. This was another victory. The final battle of the Civil War was led by President Lincoln.

Major General John Pope lead approximately 62,000 Union soldiers in the Second Battle of Bull Run. On the other side, the Confederates were lead by General Robert E. Lee. Despite having fewer men, the Confederates were ultimately victorious as a result of their superior military strategy and their understanding and use of the local terrain. The Second Battle of Bull Run was greatly impacted by both the resources of the both the Union and the Confederate troops, as well as by the local geography of the battle.

The states that separated the North from the South served as a gateway for industrial revolution. Both the North and the South had many provincial differences, and perhaps nowhere was more uniquely defined than Chattanooga, TN. Chattanooga served as the “new beginning for men” of the South. The industrial growth of Chattanooga grew steadily.

The battle lasted for three days and it resulted in the confederates’ defeat. This battle is considered a major turning point in the war because it forced the confederates to be put on the defensive side and it ended General Robert E. Lee’s biggest attempt to invade Union territory. The Union had some advantaged over the confederates such as having better weapons, telegraphs, and leadership. Whereas the Confederates were able to fight on land that they knew so they had “home” advantage. The disadvantaged for the confederacy were that the Union blocked many of the trading ports so that the Confederates’ economy was destroyed, also, the confederates had many guns and weapons, but they struggled to get enough men to enlist.

The most important battle during the Civil War was the Battle of Gettysburg. This was a battle that took place over three days in the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. This battle was the turning point of the civil war which successfully stopped the Southern Confederate Armies led by General Robert E. Lee from taking over the north. The Battle of Gettysburg was the most important battle of the Civil War because it was the largest of the civil war battles, successfully pushing back southern armies away from the north, and was the major defeat of the south. The battle of Gettysburg is still considered to historians to not only be the most important battle of the Civil war but the deciding factor towards victory.

The first reason Gettysburg was a turning point-or game changer- was because the Confederates lost a lot of men. The Confederates lost about 34% of their men (Document B.)

Union General Irvin McDowell believed his army of 35,000 would be able to defeat Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard’s 20,000, but the Confederates managed to hold him off while reinforcements arrived. Eventually the Confederates retreated upwards to Henry House Hill, where Confederate General Thomas Jackson got his troops ready to meet the Union advance (“Bull Run” 1). By 1 PM, many Union soldiers had been fighting for ten hours in addition to having marched six miles before the battle. Then Confederate backups began to arrive and by 2 PM began a counter attack. However, it ended in confusion because units on both sides shared uniforms of the same color and style.

The battle of Shiloh was one of the first major battle of the civil war which taught the Yankees and the Confederate the war wasn 't going to be easy nor quick. It was a grand Union victory. The victory wasn 't all that perfect though, U.S. Grant was allegedly drunk on the first day of the battle. Which cost him a lot of lives and the trust of other people. His reputation was hurt, but it also gained Grant heroism.

Early in the War the Union won several key battles including Ft. Donaldson, Nashville, and the two-day bloody battle of Shiloh. They also captured bases for the blockade fleets and drove Confederate armies out of West Virginia but the

Although the battle at “Fort Ticonderoga” was a small one, it was also important. This battle was the first victory of the American Colonists. This event was vital, as it would provide more artillery for the colonists, and was moral booster. Lead by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, the so called Green Mountain Boys, a militia organized to defend land and landowners, attacked and seized the fort.
