Throughout the mid 1800s to the late 1800S, millions of immigrants flooded into the United States hoping for a new life. Most of them faced a difficult journey by ship to enter “The Land of Opportunities”. Many of the immigrants moved to the city in search for jobs because machines were replacing farm laborers in the rural parts of the country. Along with the immigrants, thousands of other families moved to the city. This rapid increase of city dwellers led to new inventions and technologies.

The United States began to enter a prosperous and increasing period after the civil war known as industrialization. Despite the fact that industrialization led the United States to wealth, it also led it to many social and economic problems during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time, Upton Sinclair and Andrew Carnegie were the people who responded to the economic and social problems generated by industrialization. Andrew Carnegie was one of the wealthy men in America and was very charitable, he impacted the United States with his steel to transform cities. During these economic and social problems generated by industrialization, he responded by providing money to fund charities.

The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).

The War Between the States was one of America’s greatest wars—it was the fight for freedom, but it also impacted the economy. Because of this, America’s labor and transportation systems both took a significant turn during the Civil War, impacting America’s economy forever. In the end, the American Civil War greatly benefitted our transportation system, but devastated the South’s labor force. For a war to be fought strategically well, there first must be a form of simple, yet speedy, transportation. That is where the transcontinental railroad came in.

Reconstruction era, which was followed by post-civil war, was meant to unite the states back together, reconstruct properties, and most importantly, abolish slavery in the South. Future success of the American society was to be dictated by the support the federal government supplied to domestic manufacturing and infrastructure to make drastic improvements economically. The imposition of high tariffs, advancements in transportation and the development of the cotton gin are among the most important changes made in the United States during this time.

Throughout American History, revolutions in transportation have affected the American society politically, socially and economically. Soon after the war of 1812, American nationalism increased which leads to a greater emphasis on national issues, the increase in power and prevalence of the national government and a growing sense of the American Identity. Railways, canals, and Turnpikes began to increase making many people employed. The era of 1830-1860 represents a shift from agrarianism to industrialism. Overall, during the transportation revolution, construction of turnpikes, roads, canals, and railroads led to the market economy expansion, an increased population in America and alternations of the physical landscape of America.

City life was not the best. Cities were usually overcrowded, most immigrants lived in tenement housing. But soon urbanization picked up, and it got better, when neighborhoods formed, and people could breathe better with more space. America 's economy was and still is described as capitalism. And with the invention of the light bulb, the assembly line by Henry Ford, and the automobile, Mass production was able to support the rising economy of the U.S.

That number today is estimated to be around 15% (Jordan Urbanization), indicating that an overwhelming majority of Jordanian’s, refugees and asylum seekers have moved to the cities. This rapid urbanization has put considerable strain on infrastructure, which translates to higher costs for the government and inhabitants. Specifically, these costs are sourced from increased pressure on housing, food and basic amenities such as water, with the most overall danger being increased and rapid inflation (Higget). So as a result of water’s scarcity, Jordanians are abandoning living in rural societies and moving to cities that can offer more water and a different lifestyle. This has attributed to rapid urbanization, which has put considerable pressures on the government and citizens economically.

Industrialization after the Civil War One of the most remarkable consequences of the Civil war was the industrialization of the United States, which transformed the economy of the country. While certain industries, such as textiles and clock making saw industrialization during the first half of the nineteenth century, it was not until the Civil War that industrialization spread throughout America. The Civil War spurred the process of industrialization and encourages new production techniques that would have the greatest impact after the end of the war. Some of the significant reasons for the delay of industrialization of America after the Civil War were social, economic, political, geographic and legal reasons. The industrialization affected various groups of the society belonging to distinct races and ethnic backgrounds.

While other parts again is almost nothing but wilderness, trees, fields of golden hay, sprinkled with the occasional cow, but did America modernize all at once? To answer this question I will look at the modernization of the South, as opposed to the rest of the U.S.

The diversity of Americans grew as easier means of expansion were available with busses and cars. People could work further away from businesses, commute to schools, and distribute things like newspapers and milk in a new quick method. The ability to see family that lived far distances away had been granted, the ability to travel away from the railroads and coasts increased as means of personal transportation was achieved.
