Around 1930, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became president. Roosevelt restored the nation’s hope during his presidency. He started giving speeches on the radio which he called “fireside chats”. In this chat, he spoke to the people of a plan which he had to pick the country up from the misery it had fallen to. The plan that Roosevelt came up with was known as the New Deal.

Roosevelt presidency from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945 is one of the most important presidencies in American history. Being elected during the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt was faced with many challenges. With 13 to 15 million americans unemployed (more than 20 perecent), half of the banks failed, and the stock market at the worst it had ever been, Franklin D. Roosevelt had to renew faith in the people of america.

In my opinion president Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the most prominent presidents the united states have ever had. People were wrong for accusing him and considering him as an autocrat. During his presidency years the united states was facing an era of depression and he generated a group of reforms that he called “New Deal”. This programs was Immediately launched after becoming president of the united states. It was a very complete plan of civil, constitutional, and monetary measures to recover the nation subsequently after the tremendous economic crisis that the united states experienced since 1929.

Once Roosevelt was reelected, he immediately became involved with the people and their problems. The New Deal was put into action by President Roosevelt after he was elected in his first term. When the laws were put into action, they benefitted the majority of the middle and lower class members, but the upper class was outraged.

Crop production dried up during this time due to lack of rain and the dust storms that would plow through their cities. Without any crops farmers struggled to try and keep their farms. A smart economic move for the country at the time was when the “First hundred days had started”. It was all about prohibition & since the people were stressed about money they needed a drink or two, but since they were buying from bootleggers the government was making no profit from taxes. Roosevelt ended up accomplishing this and completely stopped prohibition for good.

Farmers were making poor choices in the hopes that it would save their farms and crops and allow them to provide food, money, and shelter to their families. Farmers may have been implementing poor practices, but it was out of the hope that would save them and their livelihoods. The 1930’s was a horrendous, dreadful time period that affected the whole world. The U.S got hit especially hard considering the country was very strong and prosperous the previous decade. Farmers that lived in the Panhandle of Oklahoma, Okies, were hit especially hard. The Okies were affected more than any other group in the U.S. during The Great Depression because not only did they suffer the economic problems of no money or jobs, but they also had to deal with dust storms and moving across the country. When the stock market crashed in 1929, the price of corn and wheat dropped so low, that it was no longer profitable to grow.
