The Farewell Address talked directly to a nation and more specifically, the remaining Founding Brothers. He warned Jefferson and Adams to put aside their party's agenda for the best interest of the nation and to not allow a two-party system control the nation because he believed it may divide the nation and in modern America, we can see how true his words are. Washington believed the nation’s strength depended on the strengthening of the Union and a prominent central government, something he worked towards in his presidency. Washington’s farewell address first mentioned the dangers of having two different political parties. In the future, Washington thought the separation of political beliefs would ruin the nation’s unity and create conflict between the citizens. The late 1700s was a fresh start for The United States. After gaining independence from Britain in 1776, the newly independent colony needed unity in the face of a revolutionary war. This unity came in the form of The Articles of Confederation, which was a proto-constitution which held the different states together during the war. It was soon realized that the Articles raised more questions and created more problems than it solved- in the words of Alexander Hamilton “[The Articles of Confederation] were neither fit for war nor peace.”

The Sons of Liberty The Sons of Liberty was an organization consisting of American colonists. They rose in the August of 1765. After the American Revolution, the newly formed United States of America was substantially unstable as there was increasing economic and social unrest. The first written documents of constitutional authority were generally weak and ineffective. As a result, there was unrest among the colonists, and this created the urge for a newly reformed government system. The proclaimed Founding Fathers took action and put forward what they thought would be the best remedy to the new nation. Some call the Founding Fathers “democratic reformers”, however, this opinion is overall misguided and uninformed, as the Constitution and the actions taken by the Founding Fathers did not represent the majority of the people in the new nation.
They lived among each other, but never completely unified until something terribly wrong occurred. Learning from the founding documents gives us the chance to understand their mental processes and how they would connect on a deep level to achieve what they strived for. We receive a sneak peek into how they functioned and their perspectives on all aspects. “They showcase philosophical, traditional, and political foundations on which our nation was built and which continue to shape our free society” (billofrightsinstitute.org). We continue to grow in size and experience every single day, and every day that passes is considered history that we used to learn from.
The founding fathers were smart men who the world looked up to because of their smart decisions, actions, that directed the U.S. to what it is today. But sadly in today’s society most people either have forgotten the things they did for us, or they just do not care. And often early U.S. history is portrayed as moving smoothly for the colonies turning into the a country of its own , but in reality it was just the opposite. George Washington wanted the best for his country, so he created a Farewell Address before the end of his presidency. George Washington had experience and went through many situations and he did not want the future generations to follow his mistakes and take his advice. He did not want us to fall into the same situations he did and his advice was valid because he has so much experience. One thing that he has experience with is foreign affairs.

The effects of his inaugural address and presidency really mattered, given he was the first of our many presidents. George Washington proved he truly cared for the American people and the country. He took charge and changed what had to be done, because his speech altered the government and society as we know it today; our Constitution, our executive and judicial branches, and our Supreme Court. While he did emphasize the need for a Constitution, he was not the only one responsible for it’s making.
