The Harlem Renaissance was an important event for the life of an African American. During this time, other people decided to give the African Americans a chance because they saw what talent the African American race had with music, art and sports. By giving them a voice, they finally had a chance to get the rights they deserved. After the Civil war, African Americans were free by law, but they still had to fight for almost everything they wanted. The African American group got so popular by their abilities in art, sports and music. Flaunting their talents, they were able to come up with some amazing genres, dance styles and beautiful works of art. The Negro League was a team of African American baseball players. They were a very successful
From the 1600s to the 1800s a lot of African Americans were involved with the issue of slavery. During that time there were many rebellions for them to get their rights back. The important actions that leading figures such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, during that crucial period, helped many African Americans towards freedom. Harriet Tubman,an escaped slave, became an Abolitionist helping other enslaved blacks, putting her own life at risk. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad.
The Harlem Renaissance made a impact that led into the Civil Rights movement. African Americans used this time to recreate a more positive image for themselves. For an example, W.E.B DuBois was one of the lead politicians during the Harlem Renaissance made a great impact that led into the Civil Rights movement. He wanted to use art in a positive way and advance political change for civil rights.
My next and final topic that I chose is The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was rooted in the struggle for black civil rights. During and about right after WWI, in a phase of the Great Migration, some half a million African Americans moved from the rural South to the cities of the North. Most people moved in hopes of escaping the poverty and the oppression of Jim Crow Laws. They encountered racist hostility nearly as bitter as they experienced in the South.
The Harlem renaissance and The Great Migration helped improve life for African Americans because they helped them. The quote tells us that the Harlem Renaissance helped African Americans get their culture back and share it with the world. “The Harlem Renaissance produced new and exciting art, literature, and music, it also helped to shape and express what it meant to be Black in America. For hundreds of years, Black people had been enslaved and oppressed in the Americas, denied their history and identity” (10). The quote shows us that The Harlem Renaissance Influenced the Civil Rights Movement because it helped African Americans gain a new spirit of self-determination and pride.
The war helped them realize that they were stronger as a people and that power was in numbers. Black people also used this sense of community to educate the following generation and pass on wealth to the following generations. Lots of artists and musicians started their own art classes and singing classes. This grew them closer to the upcoming generation and created foundational traditions for years to come. As with today’s culture, unity has made it easy to create black organizations.
Have you been judged on how you dress, what color you wear, or how you speak? Now just imagine that happening every day because of the simple fact that you have a different skin color. The Harlem Renaissance was approximately the birth of what we call today as racism. During the 1920 or the Renaissance time, African American were taken from the home in the deep South to work in the Northern and Midwestern states. With the birth of segregation and racism there came, riots and wrongly convicted black in the courts.
The Harlem Renaissance was an important time for both African Americans and whites because it gave them an opportunity to expand their horizons through art and music. It helped to establish the African American identity in America, as well as provide inspiration for future generations. The Harlem Renaissance introduced America to Jazz, different art styles, and many great writers. It expanded the horizons of Americans and things created in the movement were able to branch into other things we now consider staples of American society. The Harlem Renaissance, which was a period of great cultural and artistic achievement in the United States, is significant because it brought an influx of African-American talent to the American literary scene.
With those new opportunities they took to art, literature, and music, and gave themselves a voice to express life beyond the slave oppression. The Harlem Renaissance started a change for African Americans that motivated them to express themselves through their own culture and history. The legacy of the writers/poets, artists, and musicians had a great effect on the African American community by giving hope for better days.
African Americans lived in a world of racial injustices and cultural restrictions until the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time where there is an African American literary and art movement in the uptown Manhattan neighborhood. It is the turning point in African American culture, as well as their place in America. The African Americans were starting to become equal in American society. While the Renaissance built on earlier traditions of African American culture, it was greatly affected by the trends of the Europeans and white Americans.
“African-American poets, musicians, actors, artists and intellectuals moved to Harlem in New York City and brought new ideas that shifted the culture forever (Bio.com).” The Harlem Renaissance was an important event in American history which changed the culture of the
One only hopes to be born into an era like the 1920s. Until, the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Prohibition, and until coming into contact with the KKK. There were many exhilarating parts of the 1920s that everyone knows about, such as, the Harlem Renaissance, Women’s Rights and inventions that made everyday life so much easier. From 1920 to 1929, life was the “bees-knees”. This was a period of many new things for many people.
The Harlem Renaissance was in many ways, an incredibly liberating time for the African-American community. African Americans came together as artists, poets, painters, and musicians and conveyed their struggles through the arts. They formed a community around the intense bond they shared from a history of slavery to the daily segregation that came with being an African-American during the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance is commonly known as a pivotal point for African-Americans finally feeling free enough to openly express themselves, but this wasn’t the case for everyone. Many museums refused to display art created by African-Americans and some schools refused to consider granting African-American students scholarships entirely due to their race.
If they before were disregarded, in the 1920s their works were widespread. Harlem Renaissance has changed not only cultural but social and political position of African-Americans in American society. The mass migration to the North changed the image of the African-American person, he was not an ignorant and illiterate peasant anymore, he turned into a smart and educated representative of the Middle class. Thanks to this changes, African-Americans became the part of the American and then the world cultural and intellectual elite.
The Harlem Renaissance was a movement that reflected the culture of African Americans in an artistic way during the 1920’s and the 30’s. Many African Americans who participated in this movement showed a different side of the “Negro Life,” and rejected the stereotypes that were forced on themselves. The Harlem Renaissance was full of artists, musicians, and writers who wrote about their thoughts, especially on discrimination towards blacks, such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Langston Hughes. The Harlem Renaissance was an influential and exciting movement, and influenced others to fight for what they want and believed in. The Harlem Renaissance was the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
The Harlem Renaissance also known as The New Negro Movement was an explosion of African American culture during the 1920s to the mid-1930s through literature, dance, music, theater, and paintings.
