How Did The Puritans Contribute To The Salem Witch Trials

Puritanism was a religious and social movement that began in 16th century England and later spread to the United States. The Puritans were a group of Protestant Christians who believed that the Church of England was not sufficiently reformed and sought to purify it of its Catholic influences. They placed a great emphasis on hard work, and the importance of the Bible as the ultimate authority on matters of faith and morals. Many Puritans began to migrate to the New World in the early 17th century in search of religious liberty and the opportunity to practice their faith as they saw fit. Puritans had a major part shaping the political, economic, and social structure of New England Colonial life.

During the 1692 Salem Witch Trials and 1950 McCarthyism Era, various societies under a great amount of tension and injustice introduced the idea of formal hearings in which the citizens of these societies accused others of violating social standards. These “social standards” included the experimentation of witchcraft, and the defiance to the beliefs of the United States of America’s government. The Salem Trials and Red Scare created a display of terror which permitted the government to have increased powers over the rest of the American population. Paragraph 1- (Intro) The Salem Witch trials of 1692 were a dark and (prevalent) time for the people of Salem, Massachusetts. During this time, nearly 200-300 people were convicted of witchcraft, and over 60 were officially hanged by the government. This must all be looked at from the colonists’ point of view- they had come from a land where religion was the most important aspect of their everyday life, keeping beliefs close to heart. They took this aspect to the New World, the area inhabited with mysterious other people’s foreign to them, where fears of the devil replaced common fears of everyday life. The floodgates of scapegoating did not truly start, although, until Tituba, a young slave, confessed of witchcraft herself.

This was believed to have serious repercussions on the small community. Also around this time Indian attacks were increasingly common causing the community to be very fearful and on edge. Salem had just been through a smallpox epidemic, one of the coldest winter yet, and the small community was growing at an alarming rate, making it increasingly hard to acquire land.

Presence of Guilt Guilt is a force that has the ability to bring people to insanity. When guilt becomes great enough, the effects it has on people go much deeper than the surface. People’s body and mind are overpowered by the guilt that consumes them every second they live with their burden. In “The Crucible”, John Proctor carries the guilt of his affair with Abigail Williams. He has deeply compromised his marriage and hurt his wife.

Although there is many speculations as to what caused this outbreak, it’s known that there is multiple reason. Suspicion arose in Salem that the devil was upon the puritan community to wreak havoc and destruction when two girls were supposedly victims of the Devil’s work. As a result, many innocent people who were accused of witchcraft and compacting with the devil were rounded to be put on trial for false claims orchestrated by people in the community with ulterior motives. Soon enough there were enough people that considered themselves puritans that they had their own societies and almost governing powers. In puritanism you had to be a good saint or society would judge you. The Salem Witch trials were where people thought there were witches in their town so they had people come and investigate to see if it was true and to get to the bottom of it. I think some causes of the Salem Witch Trials were the girls dancing in the woods, Abigail having an affair with John Proctor, and Abigail. People believed that the devil was real and that one of his tricks was to enter a normal person 's body and turn that person into a witch. This caused many deaths and became a serious problem in 1692. First of all, jealousy was one of the causes of the Salem witch trials.

During this time many people were being accused of being a witch, a majority of the time it was because either someone truly believed that you were a witch and were reeking havoc or they were trying to find someone to take the blame if they were to being accused.
