In the beginning of the play, the witches discussed they wanted someone specific to become the king. They were looking for a man who did not have kids but also had a friend with kids. The witches told Macbeth they predicted he was going to be the next king, and when Lady Macbeth first heard of this, she knew then and there, she was going to do anything to seize the throne. She was even willing to unsex herself. Lady Macbeth was willing to give up having children to become powerful in Scotland. She wanted to be the queen, and in order to be the king her husband had to be the king. Macbeth did not know if he was going to be the king for sure, but Lady Macbeth was going to stop at nothing to make this happen. His wife plotted a plan to kill the king, and she convinced him to go along with it. At first he was having second thoughts about everything, but her persuasive words convinced him to follow through with the killing. Although Macbeth’s killing was a success, and he killed the king, Macbeth was only thinking of one problem at a time. He was not thinking ahead at the time or the consequences he could face. He knew the king’s sons had ran away, but he did not know they could still capture the throne before him. He also was not thinking about what could happen to him after he got caught, he was only thinking in the moment. When first introduced to Macbeth, the witches give off an unearthly aura and are portrayed as such. Banquo describes the witches as “[…] That look not like the inhabitants ó the earth […] Upon her skinny lips lips: you should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so” (1.3.40 – 49). This immediately sets a dark and ominous tone before the witches reveal the prophecy which sets the play in motion: “All hail, Macbeth!
Firstly, the witches’ revelations prompted Macbeth to murder his loyal companions. When the three witches spoke of Macbeth becoming king, it sparked the idea that this could be a realistic goal. Lady Macbeth plans to invite king Duncan over for dinner, but really she is convincing Macbeth to murder him. She influences him to kill Duncan because he is the only one standing in the way of Macbeth becoming king. Lady Macbeth plans the killing but convinces Macbeth to do the dirty deed. Lastly, Lady Macbeth is one of the causes of Macbeth’s failure because she repeatedly questions Macbeth’s manhood until she persuades him to make a bad choice. “When you durst do it then you were a man” (1.7.53-58).
As soon as Macbeth is informed of the prophecy that he will be king, from the witches, he tells Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth starts persuading Macbeth to kill the current king, King Duncan, and rule Scotland, with Lady Macbeth by his side. Macbeth opposes the idea of killing Duncan at first, but at the end he is broken and Lady Macbeth’s will is done. This implies that Lady Macbeth is very persuasive and can control Macbeth, ‘we’ll not fail’ Lady Macbeth to Macbeth. In the Jacobean era, the wife would not be able or allowed to argue with her husband, however Lady Macbeth made Macbeth kill the king, which suggests that she wants to be powerful and doesn’t care how she gets it.
Macbeth had another chance to change his outcome. his wife was consumed with the idea that he would become king, so much so that she pushed him to kill the current King. She said she couldn 't do it because King Duncan looked too much like her own father. Macbeth could have easily dismissed this and not listened to his mentally dwindling wife, “Come, thick night, and pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, that my keen knife see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, to cry ‘hold, hold!’” He followed the instructions of his wife and killed the king.
Macbeth is scared and lost at words because he deeply did not want to kill King Duncan. Lady Macbeth wants knows that she has the upper hand on Macbeth. For example, when the witches notify Macbeth that he will gain a new title, they are simply telling him of the fact and are not prompting him to act upon it (Rahman and Tajuddin 138). In spite of that, he instantly conjures up an image in his head of himself killing King Duncan in order to get the position of the King, and subtly questions if his thoughts are against his own morals (Mac I.iii.130-137). This thought is not the witches’ fault, but if they never told Macbeth of his imminent future, he would not think this way. Macbeth’s murderous thought of Duncan lets readers see that Macbeth has a lust for power, which ultimately leads to the tragedy (Kesur 5561). In addition, the witches’ apparitions also play a slight part in Macbeth’s decision making.
In play Macbeth, Shakespeare reveals that an individual’s great desire for power will lead him/her to perform consequential deeds that will scar his/her conscience and change the outcome of his/her life eternally. Macbeth is informed by three witches that he is going to become king and this initiates Macbeth’s thought of becoming powerful. Macbeth doesn’t act on his thoughts until he tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, that he could become king. Lady Macbeth is extremely power hungry and does all she can to convince Macbeth to be just as desirable as her. Together, they come up with a plan to murder King Duncan, so that Macbeth can become king like the witches foretold.
The witches played a colossal role in Macbeth’s downfall and ultimately, his death. Since the first part of the prophecy stated Macbeth as being the new Thane of Cawdor, he believed he could continue to become king as well. In knowing his prediction, Macbeth also realized that since the king was in good health, so he would have to kill the king himself. For the rest of his prophecy to come true he would have to kill the king for himself. “All hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter!”
Early on in the story it is revealed that Macbeth wants to become the king after listening from the prophecy told by the three wyrd witches. One example is when Macbeth says” Two predictions have come true. The First towards the ultimate goal, the throne!” (1.3.130-135). That proves that Macbeth has a lot of ambition to become the new king and to over throne Duncan.
Although Macbeth is having these thoughts, his conscience is saying no. His wife, Lady Macbeth, will not let him back down and tells him that he “would be so much more the man”(1.7.51) if he killed the king to gain the title himself. Macbeth feels then that he cannot let his wife down and goes through with the murder. A mistake. He does not stay true to his intuition and cares too much about others thoughts of him, leading to a terrible action and many more to come.
Lady Macbeth also rejects her motherhood, which no woman of that time would have done, showing that she’s not a normal caring, loving woman: ‘dashed the brains out,’ (1.7.58), saying that she’d rather kill her own baby then go against her word. The only thing that Macbeth aims to do is to please his wife and gain ‘co-equal love’, but Lady Macbeth might have realized that he thinks like this, so she plays with her power over him, she is the dominant one playing with her
Before Macbeth had thoughts about killing the king he thought to himself. ”if chance will have me king,why chance may crown me,without my stir. ”(pg.336). He decided to take action instead of letting fate do it on its own. Not only did the three witches tell Macbeth he was going to be king but they also told him he was going to be thane of coward.
Lady Macbeth knows that the king is coming to visit soon so she comes up with a plan to kill the king and take the throne when he is asleep. She persuades Macbeth to do the deed and they hide their treason by blaming it on Malcolm, the King’s son. Macbeth was very reluctant to kill his king as he had already witnessed the murders of his father and cousins, but because his childhood had been filled with isolation and he was used to being controlled by other people, it didn't take much for Lady Macbeth to force him into something he didn’t want to
