The truest mockingbirds are ones who symbolize strength, empathy, and a good heart with acceptance. They also have to show fortitude and bravery toward the world without thought. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird strength is led by Atticus Finch, the father of six-year-old Scout Finch. Scout is the victim of an attack and her father courageously fights to protect her. Atticus Finch is a lawyer who defends a black man, Tom Robinson, for being accused of assaulting and raping a girl, Mayella Ewell. Nevertheless, Atticus stands up for Tom and chooses to be his lawyer when he knows Tom will lose. Likewise, Atticus boldly shows his true strength and not just his job. To illustrate, Scout was being asked at school why her father was defending a black man and Atticus responds “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 101). Furthermore, when Scout was being questioned and verbally attacked Atticus steps up and reassures Scout that everything will be okay. Atticus knows he will lose the trial, but he wants to at least try to make a case for Tom Robinson. Another example, of Atticus being a hero is when Scout is not understanding why Burris Ewell was treating Miss Caroline Fisher like he did until Atticus says “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). Thus, Atticus makes sure to teach his children that everyone should be treated equally.
