Calpurnia Changes In To Kill A Mockingbird

Over the course of the novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Scout changes immensely in many ways. Jean Louise Finch(Scout) the daughter of Atticus Finch, becomes very different at the end of the book, than the beginning. Scout becomes more mature, a respectful lady, and begins to accept people the way they are. Throughout the novel Scout changes in many ways.

As a result, Calpurnia would have empathy for Walter. She was infuriated at Scout because she didn’t want the same inadvertent discrimination happening to Walter, as she had experienced it first-hand. Calpurnia emphasizes the fact that social status does not determine a person’s worth and teaches Scout to treat everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of social status. Calpurnia deems treating anyone disrespectfully or making rude comments in their home unacceptable, as it is against her values and those of the Black community. Moreover, Calpurnia relates to Scout as she is a mother figure to her.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus believes Maycomb is unjust because the town is inconsiderate of other people’s view, which is shown when Atticus gets targeted for defending a black man, worries that his kids will become bitter and catch Maycomb’s disease, and Aunt Alexandra advising Atticus that he is raising his kids wrong. To begin with, Mrs Dubose addresses to Scout and her family about how Atticus is disgracing his race and his color by defending Tom Robinson on the alleged rape case. Mrs Dubose says, “Your father’s no better than the ni**ers and trash he works for” (135). Atticus views Maycomb as an injustice town because during this time period black people were seen as a lower class. A person does not truly understand someone until walking in their shoes. Scout learns this with various people. Boo Bradley was the first person that Scout put herself in someone elses perspective. Boo Bradley stays indoors at all times. Scout realized he did that because many people were afraid that he would hurt them.

With the increase in people 's life, they mature and change. The protagonist grows up like a novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, continues. Scout frivolous and disrespectful at the beginning of the novel. She learns from her experiences throughout the novel.

Lula promotes racial discrimination Whereas, Calpurnia encourages identical rights for both white and black residents of Maycomb. Moreover, Calpurnia believes in mixing of the two cultures. When Calpurnia escorts Scout and Jem to the church Lula states, "You ain't got no business bringing white chillun here”. Lula stands up for the black and shows rage towards the Jim Crow laws. Jim Crows laws state no blacks at the white church.

Their aunt and Father thought it would be a good idea for scout to have a feminine influence in the house. As stated by their aunt when she was talking to Scout. “We discussed that it would be best for you some feminine influence . It won't be many years, Jean Louise before you become interested in clothes and boys” (170). What she was saying was that Scout will need another girl in the house instead of two guys to talk to.

Scout was more of a tomboy than a girly girl. Aunt Alexandra didn’t like how she didn’t act like a proper lady, and would ask Scout to act more ladylike. As she grew up, she was able to understand things a lot better. She began acting more grown up in situations like Aunt Alexandra’s dinner party.

“You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor” said Aristotle. Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere. Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.

The meaning of courage is when one has the mindset that enables them to face fear, difficulty, pain, or danger. Courage or bravery can come out in a person for a number of reasons. When people think of someone as “courageous” they usually think that they have done a huge deed for someone or really made a difference when, in actuality, it sometimes takes a courageous person to profess their love or even admit that they were wrong about something. Most of the efforts made by someone usually require a certain amount of courage. Fear, following one’s heart, standing up for what is right, and facing suffering with dignity and faith all require courage.

Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear. I made the decision, for example, to tell my parents about my sexuality. I am gay, and I knew the scrutiny I could face at home, and in society if I told my parents. Although fearful, I was courageous, and shared with them that I was going though.
