How Does George Orwell Use Propaganda In Animal Farm

“To swallow and follow, whether old doctrine or new propaganda, is a weakness still dominating the human mind” (Charlotte Perkins Gilman). Throughout history, propaganda has been used in many different situations and events, whether effective or not, it has brought people together and against each other. In the book Animal Farm, the author uses many scenarios where propagandas such as testimonial, fear, transfer, repetition, loaded works, name calling, and bandwagon are used to manipulate and deceive the animals on the farm. In the book many propagandas were efficient, but one that had a huge impact on the revolution was repetition—using repeated messages on pictures to persuade. Although propaganda is not a technique that involves force by the user, it is a technique that alters the choices and actions of the animals.

Napoleon initially unifies with the rest of the animal’s, but soon decides to take matters into his own hands and disposes of Snowball and his proposals towards the farm. He takes advantage of the vulnerable animals so he can become in command. Napoleon is clever, brutal, and dictatorial to the animals.

Animal Farm, an allegory written by George Orwell, compares to the Russian revolution. In the story, animals rebel against humans and take control of the farm they live on. They adopt the idea of “Animalism”, comparable to Communism. This idea is based on the principle that all animals are equal; that is, until their leader, Napoleon, takes total control of the animals and farm. He uses the other pigs to convince the rest of the “comrades” to follow his ways.

When first reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one might assume it to be a simple narrative about Farm Animals. However, through closer analysis, you begin to see the allegorical connections and satire of the work. By drawing parallels to certain major events and individuals from the Russian Revolution, Orwell is able to provide a political commentary about the harsh conditions caused by the Revolution. Animal Farm- Lies and Deceit The book Animal Farm by George Orwell portrays the theme of how someone can lie and deceive others to get what they want just like how the two pigs Napoleon and Squealer used lies and deceit to gain power over Animal Farm. Napoleon lied to other animals, Squealer lied to other animals and they both deceived the other animals, but the sad part is that neither of them lied for the better of the other animals. They both lied to get what they want- power over the animals and the farm.

Napoleon also uses manipulation to gain and maintain a firm control by changing the Commandments for the farm in ways that work to his benefit. Squealer, Napoleon’s propaganda department, Keeps the farm animals believing in Napoleon by describing what they hear and see to make it seem harmless. Using effective tactics of fear, convincing propaganda, and manipulation, Napoleon gains and maintains control of Animal Farm. “Animal Farm” has corruption and equality in a way the animals try to succeed and achieve a goal to make the farm better. Power corrupts in “Animal Farm” because the pigs have a goal which is working together and helping one another.

On this farm, the animals were mistreated and decide to overthrow the humans. This means that the people can have two completely different opinions on things, and wholeheartedly believe in them both, even if they know that one is absolutely untrue. George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, was a great example of political satire and allegory. One of the main ideas in this novel was how each event paralleled events from the Russian Revolution. The novel was written to criticize tyrannical rule and particularly Joseph Stalin's corrupt rule in Russia. The characters, settings, and plot described the social disturbance during this period and proved how the good nature of communism could be turned into something atrocious from an idea as simple as greed.
