In John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” he presents the reader with the issue of segregation in the opening of Chapter 4.With this we are introduced to Crooks and this foreshadows future problems related to his treatment and his life. This was illustrated from the meticulous description of this bedroom, which was actually the harness room. This is a very key aspect of life at that time and compared to our current generation and era, their times were very harsh and cruel. I think Crooks is portrayed as a smart and clever man which is overwhelming despite his situation. Steinbeck highlights this when the narrator says “He has books too;” These hint to us that he was lucky enough to go to school and he was considered as a bright individual. The …show more content…
Steinbeck writes "He keeps his distance and demands others to keep theirs." The word "distance" suggests that he doesn't want to be near anybody and he want to be isolated from the rest of the people at ranch. This gives us the impression that he despises them in some sort of way and he is not letting go of that thought. The way he "demands others to keep theirs" gives us the idea that if people do come near to him that something will be uncovered, like a secret. This inevitably creates tension which causes Crooks to demand his own privacy from his fellow colleagues. This links back to his mysterious character, in that time all you would have wanted is a friend and Crooks is hiding because of a fixed idea in his head that won't budge. This is also an indication of how he grew up. People could be very nice if they choose to, but he won't believe that because of how people like him were treated so he won't trust anybody else ever again. Although this could be quite true, I think Crooks should take a chance, which is why I think he is hiding a secret or its just his mysterious character. This also proves that the society was unfair, unjust and
In the Fiction novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the most important section of chapter 4 is about Crooks behavior changing. The most important quote in this section is, “Crooks said irritably, ‘you can come in if you want.’ Candy seemed embarrassed. ‘ I do’ know. ’ Course, if ya want me to.’
In the story Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, the author emphasizes a main character, Lennie, as unworldly and ignorant. Throughout the book Lennie gives the impression through his unobservant innocent acts as a childlike character. For example, Lennie endeavors to create friendships as though a child and does not know how to make friends in the manner of an adult. When Lennie tries to make friends with Crooks, Steinbeck describes Lennie smiling at Crooks in attempting to be friends.
John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, depicts race as a critical factor to the dominance of people during this time period. Racism is presented most evidently in chapter four by the treatment of Crooks, the stable buck. Crook’s and his fellow workers discussed ambitions in his quarters, which happened to be separate from the others clearly due to his skin tone. As the men conversed topics regarding the near future, Curley’s wife abruptly barged into the area searching for her husband. Noting the peril with which Curley’s wife is associated with,
f Mice and Men Essay - Essays and Analysis Critical Context and Evaluation print Print document PDF list Cite link Link Of Mice and Men is one of the most widely assigned modern novels in high schools because of both its form and the issues that it raises. John Steinbeck’s reliance on dialogue, as opposed to contextual description, makes the work accessible to young readers, as does his use of foreshadowing and recurrent images. Equally important is the way in which he intertwines the themes of loneliness and friendship and gives dignity to those characters, especially Lennie and Crooks, who are clearly different from their peers. By focusing on a group of lonely drifters, Steinbeck highlights the perceived isolation and sense of “otherness”
John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men highlights the adventures of two best friends that stimulate modern issues such as white males dominating the world. There are many themes in the book, but one that is the most eye catching is the theme of people with differences being ostracized by society. This theme of society ostracizing different people is shown through Lennie’s disability, and Crooks’ color of skin. Lennie is a large migrant worker who is childish due to his mental disability. His best friend George, who acts like his second hand, helps him through everything in life.
In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, readers are shown the character Crooks. He was given the name Crooks because the aftermath of a horse kicking his back caused him to have a crooked spine. He is different from the others, because he is the only person of color in the book. The time period of the book is when discrimination against black people was still a major problem. One of his best character traits is that he stands up for himself when others treat him wrongly because of the color of his skin.
Crook’s character is being discriminated due to his skin color which soon caused him to be disregarded. Although at a certain point, Crooks stood up but no good has come to him. Challenging discrimination is strenuous, however it is necessary in order for an individual to advance. One of the most lousy assumption made during the novel’s time period is the hierarchy between the color of men.
After reading Of Mice and Men, I felt the need to research the author. After researching the author, I realized that he based this book off of his experiences. Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California and that is where the book takes place. Due to John Steinbeck growing up and experiencing the Great Depression, I think his inspiration to write this book came from the social and economic issues that he had witnessed. He worked closely with migrants and itinerants and that deepened the empathy for workers as well as deepening his love for writing.
He feels brought down and dehumanized. After Curley’s wife left, Candy tells Crooks that she shouldn’t have said those things. Crooks says, “it wasn’t nothing…you guys comin’ in an’ settin made me forget. What she says is true” (82). This shows that Crooks knows that even though he thought he could get a place with the other guys, he knows is would never happen, because he is black and he will always be treated
They say I stink. Well I tell you all of you stink to me.” ” (65) Crooks was shunned because his physical appearance and wasn’t treated the same as the rest of the men. This makes Crooks a key character that informs us of the social injustices that where prominent during the time period of the novel.

Desmond Tutu, a South - African social activist and retired Anglican priest once said “ Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness”. Of Mice and Men is a novel which revolves around the lives of struggling farmers and how they still maintain hope despite their hardships. The symbolic representation of light embodies the hopes and the American Dream, whereas the dark epitomizes the harsh realities and truths of their lives. Steinbeck uses light and dark to foreshadow the upcoming events in the forlorn lives of the migrant workers. He also combines aspects such as the setting and characters with light and dark to paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind as to how the world of the migrant workers looks like.
Crooks (named crooks after being kicked in the back by a horse) is a very controversial character as he is the only black member of the farm and doesn’t actually feature to much in the book. When he is in it though most of what we find out is when Lenny walks into his room. From the start its clear that crooks is a very abused and defensive because he says “You got no right to come in my room” as soon as he notices Lennie stood in his room even though Lennie doesn’t really see any difference between skin colour and doesn’t understand why this is happening. Most of what can be known about Crooks is from the items in his room. His room is actually connected to the barn showing they do not value him as a person but only as a stable buck.
In the book “of Mice and Men”, Crooks works as a stable buck on the ranch. Crooks is an older man as textual evidence states “His lean face was lined with deep wrinkles”,pg.67, paragraph 3. I can surmise he is an angry man because on page 73, paragraph 3 it states ‘A guy sets alone out here at night, maybe reading books or thinkin’ or stuff like that! Crooks is a very lonely man out in the barn. Based on pg.74 paragraph 1 Crooks states ‘’ Your nuts I’ve seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’’ on ranches, with their bindles on their back on that same damn things in there heads.
Steinbeck uses light as a motif in the novella, the purpose of using the light is foreshadowing the events that would be coming up later in the novella. Crook’s can be an example, “...and his eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter wit intensity.” ( “Of Mice and Men” pg.67). The word “depth” had shows that Crook is intelligence because he’s educated. He had his own privacy and books but it still can;t change the loneliness about Crook.
