How Imperialism Affected The World Today

Many people do not realize how fortunate they are to have the medical advances and medical technology we easily have the right to use. People from many years ago did not have specialized doctors and medicine to cure their diseases that we easily have access to today. (Ramsey) Many civilizations used what they thought to be alleviating processes, but medical experts today know now were pointless and dangerous. Among these people were the Elizabethans.

Imperialism in third world countries was a very good thing that impacted the world in a very positive way. The countries that we have today would not be here without the hard working civilized America and Great Brittan. True that they benefited; but we owe our gratitude for our world today to them. Civilizing the uncivilized is no easy feat.

Most of these advancements were made in the twenty years leading up to the novels present time. Advances in technology and science have completely transformed everyday life. Throughout the novel, there are many examples of changes made to

Once people saw what was possible it sparked something it sparked people to think more of what they could accomplish to try something even though someone else had not previously tried it. One of the major technology advancement was the advancement in medicine which “extended life expectancy” (“1920’s medicine”). With new ideas about medicine it not only “saved thousands of lives” but it “encouraged “doctors to begin new research” (“1920’s medicine”). “Antibacterial drugs and Sulfa drugs were released” this helped people live longer and it helped people to become more resistant to sickness and diseases without this there could have been another pandemic which could have kill thousands of people (“1920’s medicine”).

The effects of imperialism was quite chaotic in the beginning causing an up rise from Africa and the Middle East. At first both resisted but over time western ways was making it’s way into a part of the daily routine. The imperialism started with Africa and eventually moved into the Middle East, but when it started in Africa it was for the natural resources the country possessed at the time. The Middle East was different due to the ruler at the time, Muhammad Ali was the ruler of Egypt and wanted to modernize Egypt the way he wanted to. He is sometimes known as “Father of Modern Egypt” although when he died they was not a leader that was as strong as he was to hold up his empire.

For the Americans, imperializing China was a way to keep European countries from colonizing it and gaining too much power. For the Europeans, it was a great economic investment. But from the Chinese point of view, the foreigners were evil and out to destroy their ancient culture. European imperialism has had a long standing impact on Chinese society today, being both good and bad. Before imperialism, life in China was simple and self-sufficient.

It caused the Opium War, World War 1, and created many racist and unreasonable laws. The British were very self-centered and imperialized countries only to gain territories and resources from them. I think that imperialism was not justified for multiple reasons because although imperialism did improve the lives of many natives and increased global trade, the majority of the world ended up hurting from it. People began to improve sanitation and personal hygiene. The betterment of having a clean society, and making cities less crowded. (Stock) The cleaner society and less populous cities made for less outbreaks of disease, more living space, and less congestion when traveling. There were safety regulations put out by state and national governments in the U.S. so that the disease would not spread. (Ott)

The regions that were affected by imperialism include Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Lands were used to maintain foods and keep them from spoiling. Lands, however, were expensive and dangerous to get. Traders had to travel from a land route from Europe to Asia to get them.
