Toward the beginning of Ray Bradbury’s, Something Wicked This Way Comes, William Halloway was often associated with dramatic irony to show his deficient understanding of the carnival’s operation but verbal irony to show that he was also suspicious of the carnival. Dramatic irony is evident when Will and Jim question the whereabouts of the lighting rod salesman, like when one of them said, “Storm never came. But he went.”(Bradbury70) then the other said, “Where? And why did he leave his bag?”(70), and finally, “What’s so important you forget everything?”(70).

In her nonfiction book Stiff, Mary Roach frequently uses parentheses and footnotes to include interesting information that is loosely related to her narration. This style conveys humorous and intriguing facts in a way that an apathetic reader can easily skip. While interesting, Roach will include tangents. Poe use situational irony when he describes that he pitied the old man, although he chuckled at heart. The term comedy can refer to an entire work or simply only parts. Comedy, which can range from romantic (the guy gets the girl and they live happily ever after) to satiric, which is when “human weakness or folly is ridiculed from a vantage point of supposedly enlightened superiority” (Kennedy and Gioia 882). There are many other forms that can be found everywhere. High comedy “relies more on wit and wordplay than physical action for its humor”, while Low comedy tends to “explore the opposite extreme of humor”

For example, when Mr. Spizz, the town police officer, chases after the Hells Angels on their motorcycles with a tricycle. This is laughable because it is completely ludicrous that an old man on a tricycle could catch up to tough guys on motorcycles. If police officers in real life used tricycles instead of cars and motorcycles to chase criminals they wouldn’t ever catch them and then there would be criminals on the loose all throughout the country. It would be extremely hilarious if a person saw a police officer chasing a car robber with a tricycle. The original story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a novel called “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” written by Robert Louis Stevenson. In 2003, they released a fantastic movie directed by Maurice Phillips and produced by John Hannah. Some of the main characters in this movie include Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde played by John Hannah, Mabel Mercer played by Kellie Shirley, and Ned played by Jack Blumenau. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a drama/thriller about a scientist (Dr. Jekyll) whose mad experiment goes wrong. He wants to figure out how to separate the good from the evil in a human’s soul and what happens to him while it’s in his system.

True humor is supposed to be used as way to make people look at situation from a different perspective and to laugh about it. An example of this is from the reading “SantaLand Diaries” where David realized that life was not going as expected. He is thirty –three years old and applying for an elf job. He tries to imagine a whole new world where he is able succeed and accomplish his dreams within three weeks of being in New York. In the reading he says “I’m trying to look on the bright side” he is using this imaginative world to help him get through a really tough time within his life.

The use of humor to alleviate the dull reality of life is used in Ken Kesey’s novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which supports the idea that one's own humor creates happiness in others and relieves stress much like in the critically acclaimed Christmas classic, Elf, starring Will Ferrell. Humor is used by Ken Kesey very prominently especially when the patients do not seem to have the ability to laugh at anything nor find anything funny. The patients live a very dull life in which they repeat their monotonous cycle of life in the ward. They no longer have known what it is like in the norm because of the Big Nurse wears them down with the oppressive nature of the Combine.

Montag tells Mrs. Bowles, “Your children hate your guts... Go home and think how it all happened and what did you ever do to stop it?”(101) Montag is trying to get Mrs. Bowles to change her mind using emotions like sadness and regret.  Sadness is used when he reminds her that her children hate her. This is sad because usually your children love you and if they do not it is a sign of a troubled family. Another emotion from pathos is regret.

Some people find violence amusing, others do not. Amusement through violent action between characters is called slapstick comedy. Happy Gilmore uses an iota amount of slapstick comedy through beating up others, unintentionally hurting others, others hurting him, and hurting himself. Mark Twain was a prominent humorous American writer in the late 19th century who was infamous for satirizing many elements of society and writing in a vernacular that most people could understand. He believes that humor is “strictly a work of art” and that it is much subtler than comedy which “shouts [the nub] at you … every time” (Source A). Using his sense of humor, Mark Twain writes “Cannibalism in the Cars” and uses repetition and irony to achieve a humorous effect. Throughout the whole story, Twain uses repetition through anaphora and alliteration which creates suspense by emphasizing certain parts of his story to make the end seem more humorous.

Saving the Modern World: One Satire at a Time There are so many problems that the world faces today, some more urgent than others. Some individuals choose to focus on the newest fashion style or celebrity breakup rather than focus on one that could bring about the doom of a nation. The use of satire in great literary works, television entertainment, and comics is an effective way to enlighten the world on the difficulties it faces.

The lives of the main character revolve around desire. Throughout the play, the theme of death is the opposite of desire is developed through the main character’s need to be desired or desirable. Blanch wants to be desired. She will do anything to be desired. She lies to everyone around her, pretending to be something she’s not.

One of the most valuable aspects of personality is humor – we value one’s sense of humor and make friends often based on finding certain things funny. But how and why do we consider things to be funny at all? Human beings have strived to uncover fundamental truths about human nature for centuries – even millennia – but humor itself is still yet to be pinpointed. Henri Bergson is only one of many who has attempted this feat, and his essay Laughter: an essay on the meaning of the comic from 1911 breaks down comedy into what he believes to be its essential forms and origins. While Bergson makes many valid points, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times that was brought to screens only twenty years later seems to contradict many of Bergson’s theories, while Bergson seems to contradict even himself over the course of his essay.

According to Mark Twain, humorous stories are very different from comic and witty stories. Humor adds amusement and interest in the message that is being delivered. “Cannibalism in the Cars” delivers the humorous message by using irony, satire, and syntax. The irony in the short story is in the way that the senators speak so sophisticated.
