This book discusses the flaws that America has when talking about human trafficking, as well as the shortcomings within the Justice System regarding procedures, policies, and prosecution, and outcomes for human trafficking victims. The book opens with stating the amount of money made within human trafficking and then continues to add on from this topic about the amount of people being trafficked. These two factors then let the author continue to discuss the errors and inequities within the Justice System as well as the overall lack of intervention and support to help people who are being trafficked.

There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. Other forms of human trafficking are labor trafficking, slavery and in some cases human trafficking consist of the removal of organs. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. In the United States, human trafficking has taken on different forms than what is normally thought of as human trafficking. It can range from a migrant laborer wanting to get a job to be able to support his family to survive who is then forced into manipulative work to a child running away to get away from abuse that is happening at home and the person that is helping the child get away from the abusive situation at home turns out to be exploiting him or her to make a profit (Farrell et al, 2014). According the International Labour Organization has estimated that 20.9 million people are involved in human trafficking in the whole world, with 1.5 million victims are in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. In 2011, there were 3,969 convictions worldwide, and there were only 151 convictions in the United States.

Even thought the United States provides programs to help victims of human trafficking, the victims are not familiar with these programs. It often takes them about a year or more to receive help because they are uneducated. The United States has the goal to achieve global awareness of human trafficking, but it is a difficult task. For example countries like Algeria denied sex trafficking despite evidence.

Many of the victims are forced with violence or indirectly with psychological blackmail into the sex trade. Human trafficking is the worst form of abuse that can be inflicted on an individual. A trafficked human being suffers from mental, and physical abuse, leaving them with lifelong mental illnesses. Many women dream of a better life and are willing to travel across the globe to better their lives.

There are poor and desperate people that will go into the fraudulent employment that are the utmost collective input systems in the world of trafficking (The United States Agency for International Development). With poverty, most human trafficking victims are repeatedly persuaded with false promises of decent jobs and opportunities to live a better life (FAIRUS). For instance, women are manipulated with false jobs such as nanny, modeling, and talent jobs. Women tends to be the easier target because they face in status and opportunity which make susceptible to trafficking. Another purpose of human trafficking is prostitution of others, and sexual exploration.

Human trafficking today is a billion dollar industry and is “based on the principles of supply and demand” (“Human Trafficking”). There are usually three different types of people that are trafficked. These types include children who are under 18 and sold into commercial sex, adults who are forced into commercial sex, and those who are forced to provide labor or services (“Human Trafficking”). There are even a lot of very current examples of human trafficking. One example made its way into the New York Times on September 15, 2014.

First, let us talk about what exactly is Human Trafficking? Human Trafficking is trafficking a person as recruitment, transfer, or harboring a person, where they have control over them and become their pimp. Many traffickers get promised a one way deal, meaning if they sign this contract, or go with this person they will be famous, make money for their family, have a house over their heads are just many “promises” that are made to them from their pimps. It refers to illegal sale or trade of people for sexual abuse or forced labor through coercion or abducting people. Our world is facing from many obstacles created by natural and manmade disasters which further results in problems in every country’s economy and social welfare of every person is jeopardized and one of the problems faced by majority of the nations of this world due to economic downfall is human trafficking. Basic necessities such as safety, food, sleep, hygiene, and medical care are often denied to victims of human trafficking. Children may be greatly impacted in their emotional and physical development when they are forced to live in an unhealthy environment away from their families and loved ones.
