“He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall” (Poe). Edgar Allan Poe was an American author and poet during the 1800’s (anb). He is known for his gothic style of writing, and tragic tales. Poe has written famous pieces such as The Raven (1845), The Black Cat (1843), and The Tell Tale Heart(1843). But one of Poe’s stories, The Masque of the Red Death (1842), relies heavily on themes of death, pestilence, human nature, and religion. Through these themes and symbolism, Poe explores the darker side of humanity and the meaning behind life.

In contrast, The peasants mean nothing to him because they’re not worth of any value. The ignorance comes from Prospero’s delusional views of the world. As said before, Prospero doesn’t do anything because he looks the world through a different perspective. It ties in with his selfishness because since the Red Death has not affected him and instead ignores the harsh reality and lives in his own fantasy.“The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet dancers, there was musicians, there was beauty, there was wine. All of these and security were within. Without was the ‘Red Death’”(Poe). By holding the masquerade ball, the prince is trying to form his own society. He’s gathered people he considers to be worth of value--people that are like him. “As none of the guests, also described as “a multitude of dreams,” are given any specific character traits, they could be interpreted as mere “fantasms” of the Prince's imagination, or imaginary projections of the Prince's psyche”(Milne). Poe’s illustration of the guests projects the false image of humanity and society. Society is another world created by self deception and hypocrisy. The humans that create this community are false beings that try to belong into this world by conforming to society’s standards. Prospero’s society is a representation of his own character: full of ignorance, arrogance, …show more content…
The masked character has a mysterious presence, and makes the prince coward and renders him powerless. When the masked figure chases after Prince Prospero; none of the party members get involved with this chase. Even though they were solely picked by Prince Prospero to stay at the castle; it shows that the prince is alone and nobody cares about him. “The masked stranger, dressed as the Red Death, represents the futility of trying to control the inevitable. The reaction of the guests to the mask of the stranger, which shows telltale spatters of blood from the plague, illustrates the universal fear of death and the unknown” (Gillespie and Naden). Poe displays that the world is full of the unknown, and humans are very ignorant to it in this case. They try to take control over their lives, but life is uncontrollable. Humans don’t have the power to control, only the world does. “He made his way uninterruptedly, but with the same solemn and measured step which had distinguished him from the first, thought the blue chamber to the purple--throughout the purple to the green--through the green to the orange--through this again to the white--and even thence to the violet, ere a decided movement had made to arrest him” (Poe). As the prince is going
The Masque of the Red Death was written by Edgar Allen Poe. It is about a Prince that invited his friends into his castle to protect them from the “Red Death”. The “Red Death” is a disease that caused pain to the carrier and eventually precipitates death. However, the “Red Death” comes to the Prince’s castle and kills everyone.
Eventually, the Red Death, which Prospero had tried so desperately to evade, approached and killed him, so “now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revelers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each is the despairing posture of his fall” (88). Because the castellated abbeys can be considered a part of Prospero’s mind, then this clearly shows that denying the existence of a problem will not magically resolve it, and could instead cause bigger and even more pressing issues. Poe is proving that even if a problem does not directly affect someone, it should still be acknowledged, confronted, and dealt with in one way or another.
(Poe 8). This is describing the Red Death's appearance at the masquerade. This story is much like a story told in the Harry Potter series about three brothers. In this story as well as the other one the brothers try to cheat death who is portrayed in as a human-ish figure. Instead of killing them then he congratulates them and sends them on their way.
In The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allen Poe, Prince Prospero reflects one who lives a posh lifestyle. His significance to the story is to show that death takes anyone regardless of wealth. Furthermore, the masked ball itself serves as a distraction for the partygoers, “...it was a folly to grieve, or to think” (Poe, 420). Every room is decorated with its own color, most being colors of happiness, like green, but the seventh room is a dark and dreary red and black colors. That room symbolizes death, for it is designed with colors that are associated with horror movies and blood.
the external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. All these and security were within. Without was the "Red Death".
In the allegorical story, “The Masque of the Read Death”, Poe, tries to express the human desire to avoid Death. The place and the time of the story portray social ignorance, since in the past death was a taboo that provoked terror in humanity. The consternation causes motivation in issues such as death dissolution or prevention. Poe finds himself motivated by death; in this work, his character Prince Prospero has strange tastes that represent death symbolically and makes a great effort to avoid it. First and foremost, the name Prospero is a metaphor; closely related to wealth and material prosperity.
A few of the guests got close to the mysterious person but they didn’t find anything. It turned out that there was nobody underneath that costume. Slowly after some moments, the guests started slowly dying one by one, just as the plague had killed people before. There was nobody left in that castle, and it remained that way for a long
In the short story “Masque of the Red Death”, Edgar Allan Poe uses the ignorance of Prince Prospero's actions and characteristics to portray the main idea that humans cannot escape death. In the story there is an airborne disease going around called “The Red Death”, which consequently so many people have died from it. There are also rooms that signify the stages of life from birth to death and a big ebony clock which signifies how much time you have left before you die. When Prince Prospero (a fearless and wise prince) decides to throw a masquerade ball in a castellated abbey, he invites the healthiest people in the land and they “leave means neither of ingress nor egress” to try and shut out the “The Red Death” (Edgar Allan Poe). Therefore,
Edgar Allen Poe mentions that while the Prince’s guest arrive to the castle, there will seven rooms to serve as the main venue for the event. Poe describes that each chamber is decorated with a different color. As the story progresses and develops, the mysterious figure walks toward the room that is black with red windows. He then attacks any living person or thing that approaches. After he slowly kills the guest one by one until all have been stricken with disease.
In different situations, people may need to rely on the views of others in order to make sure that they have a basic understanding towards the situation that they may face. Consequently, due to this dependency, many people whom may give out their views will also attempt to corrupt others, or provide a falsified truth in order to benefit themselves or make them look like that they were in the right. And during those situations, all the recipients can do is accept their tall tales as fact, being unable to see the full picture during such situations. Poe plays this out heavily, as he constantly seems to be in denial over his sanity within this mystery. From the beginning of the story, you would immediately feel a sense of uneasiness when the narrator
