Good evening class of 2016 and guests. It is an honor to stand before you tonight. If I 'm being completely honest, I was absolutely clueless about what to say in this speech. But over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on what Baldwin High School has meant to me and what comes next. And during my reflection, I found myself thinking about time. (PAUSE) About how time flies by, (PAUSE) about how there’s never enough of it. (PAUSE) About how life hits us so fast that we don’t always get to appreciate the time that we have, or the people that we share our time with. It seems like only yesterday when we first stepped foot on campus, and now, here we are sharing this final time together. I 've come to accept the fact that we can 't gain back lost time. (PAUSE) We can never go back in time to relive a favorite moment...or correct a mistake from our past. But despite the fact that we might not be able to stop or rewind time, we do have the opportunity to cherish every moment, to make our time memorable and appreciate the time that we have left. …show more content…
Because, as they say, laughter is the best medicine; (PAUSE) probably because it’s free and it doesn’t require a prescription. (PAUSE) But no matter how tough things may seem, laughter always seems to cheer us up. So I urge all of you to laugh, laugh at whatever you want, whenever you can. As E.E. Cummings once said, “a day without laughter is a day wasted.”And I cannot agree more, laughter has the ability to brighten any day, but beyond simply making each day more enjoyable, laughter requires you to stop and appreciate the moments that you
Bardon argues that the relief theory can be used to explain why we find awkward or situations saturated with tension humourous. He states, “The relief theory is the view that humorous laughter is a manifestation of the release of nervous excitement or emotional tension” (Bardon 468). By recognizing that laughter is “manifestation” of our stress and tension, Bardon recognizes that we need to release our anxieties and humor is a good way to allow the reader to cope with their current problems. This epitomized in Sedaris’ essay when he explains how he used to deal with situations that made him nervous. Sedaris writes, “We were alone now, and something unpleasant entered my mind.

And people begin saying that it smells like a commitment and roses, and everyone begins to cheer and laugh together. Boyle claims that compassion is not about feeling another’s pain, but rather it is about bringing another person towards yourself. (74) . And Thus Father Boyle shows another assertion about how humor is a great centralization of keep your head up through struggles and disappointment.
One example of this is when McMurphy first comes to the asylum. He brings an uplifting attitude and most importantly he brings laughter. For example, McMurphy is trying to hold back a laugh when there is a big meeting with the Big Nurse. The power of laughter is so great because of the fact that the asylum is such a depressing place. Finding happiness is essential in hard times because when you find that happiness, it can literally change the world for
and I love a little laugh in a very serious
It’s hard to understand much else about the why’s and how’s of laughter, but they seem to know, simply, that it works. This means that in order for readers to further understand the reality of things like humor in Kesey’s book, oneself should have to ignore their feelings and sacrifice the pleasure and ask questions that help people to discover what it is about humor that is so powerful. Laughter does not only play a major role in the story, but in life as
Laughter has the power to unite people, as Bakhtin writes, “Laughter liberates not only from external censorship but first of all from the great interior censor” (Bakhtin 94). Laughter acts as a powerful force that alleviates pain by destroying repression and turning fear into grotesque ridiculousness while also uniting people to see the positives in negative situations. Moreover, it applies to social and political issues as a satire of political figures, which acts as a weapon against the government. For example, many people use satire to alleviate the fear and anger that Donald Trump is the current US President by ridiculing and criticizing his ideas and mindset. Thus, laughter liberate us by freeing us from
Erma Bombeck, an American comedian and author of the 1960s, once acknowledged, "There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt. " Laughter was once claimed to be the best medicine; however, millennials seem to be testing this boundary Bombeck mentions as they take humor to higher levels that may be causing more harm than good. Humor 's role in society has evolved over the years, millennials using it as a means to manipulate emotions, distancing people, while it once linked people together and provided a source of collective entertainment. For generations past, humor was a uniting factor; but, presently, humor seems to be a dangerous, divisive factor with bigger, more serious implications for the outlook of the generation.
Sarcasm Brings Humor Sarcasm is embedded in everybody’s language to make our communication more humorous. When at parties or simply hanging out with friends, we use sarcasm like, “oh shut up” when someone says something funny or ridiculous. We actually don’t want that person to stop talking, if anything we want them to continue. Sarcasm has to be used when it is appropriate or else one can get into a sticky situation.
Moreover, laugh can reduce some physical symptoms of stress as it can also simulate circulation and aid muscle
Laughter can enlighten somebody’s day tremendously. One major comedic artist is Lil Dicky, with his fast rapping and ability to make you smile in one line is impeccable. Laughing is good for a person’s feeling. It’s important to laugh throughout the day, it makes life less mind-numbing. Laughter brings joy and uplifting spirit to somebody’s day.
8 ways Corporates can enjoy Laughter Yoga “America has a great legacy of humor, why can’t we channel that into our workplace?” asks Beth Bongar, America’s very own Laughing Diva. Our movies, art, music and culture are heavy with humor and gaiety but nobody has explored how we can deliver that humor in a corporate set up to liven up proceedings without disturbing the normal work flow. That was until Beth Bongar, America’s one and only “Laughing Diva” introduced her version of laughter yoga. You don’t have to go far to find Beth’s Laughter Club, there’s probably one right in your community! Laughter yoga is not standup comedy or an unending flow of lively jokes, it’s much more than that; it’s a time tested and improved discipline with its own methods and systems sourced from the ancient Indian science of “hasyayoga”(Sanskrit for laughter yoga).
Another positive for freedom of speech for comedians is that the jokes made can lighten the mood of the subject. A comedians function in society is to challenge authority, and talk about subjects that may be unacceptable (Hartsell). Comedians are expected to go too far, but when they do, they are disapproved for it. Although, the audiences may only laugh at a joke because of how awkward it is going to be if no one did. “People like to mask their feelings due to not wanting others to really know how they feel—so people may laugh in times of nervousness because they are trying to balance their anxious feelings” (Kaminski).
14 years have passed since I took my first steps into kindergarten. Back then, everything was all fun and games. Who would have known that time would fly as fast as the speed of light. In a blink of an eye, here I am now, writing an essay for my college application. Different ideas and thoughts popped up in my head, including the cliche introduction that I presented.
Your college days; the days your parents saved for or the odd hours you worked to pay for classes, the days you dreaded or got excited over. Seems like yesterday you were signing up for clubs and attending freshman social and now it’s gone. You needed to stop wearing sweatpants everywhere and rolling out of bed at noon. You had to start taking care of your body, the assignments you were neglecting and friendships /relationships that you were avoiding dealing with.
