Hunger: Feeding America

Around the world, there are thousands of starving children that seem to go unnoticed daily. Shoppers are constantly in the supermarket filling their carts with hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries for their family’s without thinking of those in need. In 2008, a remarkable shopping cart ad was released which depicts a distraught young African American child reaching up to the shopper begging for help to save him from starvation. Feed SA, a charitable organization which helps the poverty-stricken across the county has designed a striking ad to bring attention to just how easy donating can be. The effectiveness of this ad is due to the powerful rhetorical appeals to pathos in which it implements.

Across the globe humans face poverty, unemployment, natural disasters, and other life-altering problems. The thing that those problems have in common is causing the pain and misery of food not being on the table. Many people and organizations are fundraising and collecting donations to help those in need. Programs educate and teach people to create self-sustaining food sources. However there is one very powerful and reputable group that has the most power to help the cause of hungry children in the United States and that group is the federal government.

Could it be because the state is focusing on how much they are exporting and overlooks the deeper problem of hunger within their state? Christina Dreier lives in Mitchell County, Iowa, and is faced with the despair of not having enough food to feed her two growing children. Her plight is so extreme that she must make her three- year- old son go without breakfast, in hopes that he will eat the free breakfast provided by the school so that there will be enough food to feed their family for lunch. Sometimes there’s not even enough food for her to give her kids a snack that is healthy.

Child hunger in America is not something that you can just sweep under the rug, as well as child hunger in other parts of the world. Many schools have financial aid for lunch for families that live in poverty, meaning that a child may receive lunch free or at a reduced price. In Robert Paarlberg's article "Attention Whole Food's Shoppers" he reminds readers that not everyone in the world is as fortunate as those who live in developed countries and that it seems those living in more prosperous nations have become more apathetic towards the issue of hunger and food production in less developed countries. His use of pathos and ethos make readers feel more connected to the issue, as well as his use of logos to educate the reader while offering practical solutions to the issue ultimately make his argument effective. In conclusion, poverty and freedom are the most common form of social/political issues that can be seen in real world that are very well documented in the novel Scored and in the film The Hunger Games. There is an interconnection between freedom and poverty. If there is freedom, it means that the government is taking action to keep people happy and because of that, there is less poverty. This is usually not the case. Most governments try to get the best out of its citizens and leave little for them and this causes poverty.

Feeding America is a nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provides food and services to people each year. Together this network is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization.   Recently, more families and individuals begin to struggle with hunger due to the cost of living increasing and income from employers not being sufficient enough to feed and take care of a family. Price and income shifts can radically impact the poor and hungry.

In the United States there are many children and adults that go hungry, due to financial problems. With the economy and how high cost of living is, it’s hard to provide, food for the family. The results of hunger on children in America are not having the right nutrition, can have serious implication for a child’s physical and mental health. Also food insecurity is harmful to all people, but it is particularly devastating to children.

This negatively impacts kids’ health and development, but this can also negatively impact them academically as well as emotionally and socially. No Kid Hungry is an organization that is making a difference regarding this problem. No Kid Hungry was founded by Billy Shore and his sister Debbie Shore in 1984. Since then, No Kid Hungry has raised and invested more than $528 million in the fight against hunger, and has won the support of national leaders in business, government, health and education, sports, and entertainment.

For twenty five years the church of the apostles in New York has fed the homeless every morning, never missing a single day. But the food that the church can provide grows smaller every year, Anna Quindlen states “the issue is measured in mouthfuls” and follows up with “ In Los Angeles 24 million pounds of food in 2002 became 15 million in 2006.” These quotes give the reader a logical reason to be empathetic towards the hungry by explaining the problem and giving statistical reasoning as to exactly how monumental the problem actually is

In a country that wastes billions of pounds of food each year, it's almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet every day, there are millions of children and adults who do not get the meals they need to thrive. We work to get nourishing food – from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers – to people in need. At the same time, we also seek to help the people we serve build a path to a brighter, food-secure future.

Right now 16.2 million kids in America struggle with hunger and part of those children are living here in Washington state too and struggling every day.
