Imagine immigration detention centers looked like family homes in a tree-lined neighborhood. Instead of being deported or sitting doing nothing all day in cells, detainees are allowed back into their communities to volunteer and work toward a goal: make America better.
There are many reasons to rethink immigration policy. One, immigrants make many positive contributions to our country. According to an article in Huffington Post and Newsweek, “Immigration fuels our economy. Many Americans believe immigration hurts the economy.” There is consensus among many leading economists where immigration gives economies a net boost. The article states, “The foreign-born population in the United States is currently made up of 37 million people, or about 12 percent of the total U.S. population.” This means we have 37 million voices who report back to people in other countries about life in United States.
These immigrants trigger worldwide tourism when friends and families visit, spending money in our economy and helping America obtain pieces of the U.S. $2 trillion global travel and tourism industry, which is reportedly double of automotive manufacturing worldwide.”
These contributions are overlooked and downplayed. Instead, immigrants are being vilified by the president and his base and being called “terrorists, rapists, and animals.” In reality many are making incredibly positive contributions to our communities and our country as a whole.
There is a myth people believe immigrants taking American jobs. This isn’t true, stated by Daniel Griswold of CATO institute, “Immigrants tend to fill jobs Americans can’t or won’t fill, mostly at high and low ends of the skill spectrum. Immigrants are disproportionately represented in such high-skilled fields in medicine, physics, computer science, but also in lower-skilled sectors such as hotels, restaurants, domestic service, construction and light
