The environment and people, especially ancient people, go hand in hand. Their effects can influence each other monumentally. One great example is ancient Egypt and the Nile. The Nile was really the only reason Egypt came to be so prosperous. The river supplied Egyptians with everything, food, water, land for farming.

In 1375 B.C.E. a young Pharaoh ascended the throne named Amenhotep IV, but just five years into his rule he changed his name to Akhenaten and with this change he went against tradition and the culture of his people, moving his capital, and declaring a new religion. This change affected every aspect of the Egyptians life, how they worshiped, lived and even the art that was so important to the culture. Though Egypt had a long history of tradition and respect of the past, Akhenaten’s radical behavior did not last, it was just ten short years after his death, that his city was demolished and his name almost obliterated from history, and the old ways brought back. The religions found in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt would shape how relationships within society functioned, including how communities related themselves to the divine and the role of leaders and priests. Furthermore, these religions would also affect how each of these societies thought about justice and even influenced attitudes toward the afterlife.

Mummification was a very important part of the ancient egyptians religion. Mummification is a process in which the skin and flesh of a corpse can be preserved. The reason why the ancient egyptians thought this was so important was because it was supposed to help them get to the afterlife. The Roman Emperors continued to use the religion to affect the Egyptians and stabilize their rule in Egypt, although they were not ruling from Egypt as there was the praefectus who was usually represented in the Egyptian form. Ancient Egypt was ruled by a person called a Pharaoh. These Pharaohs were like kings and emperors. The Pharaoh in ancient Egypt was the political and religious leader of the people. They were about 170 pharaohs and they ruled from 3150BCE to about 31BCE. Out of 170 pharaohs, they were a few of them who stand out because of their accomplishment.

Religion was in every Ancient Egyptians' life. Many gods and goddesses were worshiped everyday. There was also a legends or a god and goddess to interpret everything they did not know. Such as, the Book of Thoth. The Book of Thoth brought great wisdom, and great spells in the world.

The rivers that these civilizations were built around directly impacted the way they viewed their gods. The Nile was a very strong and reliable river. It flooded annually blessing the Ancient Egyptians with a richer agriculture then Ancient Mesopotamians. (pg 17) Because of this the Egyptians viewed their gods as reliable beings who wanted to help them.

Religion in Western civilization has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping and developing Western society. Regardless of the form of religion, such as polytheism or monotheism, people in ancient societies believed in a God or Gods. This belief in a higher power was an important part of human progression and expansion. Religion was the backbone of Western civilization and has always been a very important foundation of culture, schooling, philosophy, art, and social interaction. Before Judaism and Christianity, philosophers such as Aristotle ponder the thought of a higher power and in his book Metaphysics wrote about eternal motion was an unmoved mover.

Each god and goddess had a unique/specific purpose, much like the roman and Greek mythology. For example: Ra, the god of the sun; Isis, the goddess of nature and magic; Horus, the god of war; and Osiris, the god of the dead (source 5). The gods and goddesses were worshipped in temples run by the priests, that were not open to the public. Due to this the citizens would have small statues to worship the gods. The citizens would also wear charms and amulets for protection against evil, according to source 5.

The Ancient Egyptians were one of the first Civilizations to form in the ancient world. These people dealt with each other in peace and war, birth, and death. The Egyptians have influenced us in many ways. The Egyptians have influenced us in our inventions, math, writing, medicine, religion, sports, and music. Ancient Egyptians were able to build massive movements, pyramids, and temples.
