Importance Of The Articles Of Confederation

Before the U.S. Constitution there was the Articles of Confederation. The document could declare war, negotiate treaties, and control foreign affairs. It couldn’t enforce laws, tax, and raise its own army. What the Articles Of Confederation lacked was a strong central government. Alexander Hamilton called for a constitutional convention in 1786, and it took place in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787.

The Articles of Confederation was made because America needed a government after the war. One of the flaws were that they had no national army. This led to to the constitutional convention because they were vulnerable to attacks and couldn’t defend themselves. Another flaw was was that they couldn’t tax so the government was broke. That led to the constitutional convention because the government needed money to pay back the debts that they had.

The Article of Confederation was a document that gave a national government to the United states, after the US declared independence from Great Britain. However, this was the first written constitution for the united states, and this was necessary to have a national government. In addition, after the March 1, 1787 the Continental Congress implement the new government into the thirteen states and the economy. Furthermore, the constitution was a form of government that protect the people rights, as a citizen of the United States.

The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States history. It was a consent among the 13 states of United States during the war of independence in 1776 where the Congress created a council to outline a document which was approved by it and was sent to the states for confirmation. After being approved by all the 13 states, the article of confederation came into action on March 1, 1781. All the power of the national government was centered in the Congress. The article was unicameral where each state had a single legislative body.

The Articles of Confederation were passed following the American Revolution in order to establish law and order to the new country. Compared to today’s refined government, these laws came with many weaknesses such as differences in currency, unequal representation, and no enforcement of the laws. The articles stated that each state could have their own currency, meaning if two people in different states wanted to trade, or if someone was traveling to another state, they would have to exchange their currency. This would turn out to be troublesome due to the extra effort being made in currency exchange. It was like if traveling to or trading with another state was like traveling to or trading with another country in the modern day.

The Constitution of 1879 established the United States national government and its underlying laws, which guaranteed its people their basic rights. Compared to our first governing document, the Articles of Confederation was weak and the national government allowed states to operate like independent countries which caused the division among the original colonies. When it was evident the Articles of Confederation was not necessarily the best option a new constitution was conceived. At the 1787 convention, delegates planed on creating a stronger federal government which would bring a solution for the country. This new constitution would contain three the branches; executive, legislative and judicial where the power would be divided equally.

The democratic principles, civil liberties, and separation of the federal and state governments present in the modern-day Constitution can all be traced back to the Articles. The purpose of the Articles in the course of American history, unknown to be at the time, was to serve as a rough draft of sorts to the Constitution, and though it did not succeed in its goal to found a capable government, it was a necessary step in reaching it. It is also worth noting that the Articles were completed during wartime, and the powers that were delegated to the federal government, being the ability to maintain an army and navy, take charge of foreign affairs, and manage Indian affairs, reflect this. The Articles of Confederation was made in haste and out of necessity, and the fact that in addition to this it was also the first attempt at a government made by the colonists and still managed to lay the groundwork for the future of the county stands as testament to the talent of those who wrote

The Articles of Confederation was a step in the right direction of democracy. However, the document was fundamentally weak. In this essay, I argue that the Articles of Confederation was not the ideal governmental model. Primarily, the weakness of the Articles of Confederation revolves around the weak central government's inability to tax.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

Imagine an army consisting of approximately 1,500 upset and armed farmers and veterans marching in Springfield, Massachusetts in order to protest numerous unjust economic and political policies. These farmers and veterans are protesting because when they arrived home from the Revolutionary War, they met heavy taxes and huge debt. When they were unable to provide the money to pay for these, they would be arrested. Because of how unjust he felt this was, a man named Daniel Shay led this march, which later became known as Shays’ Rebellion. At the time, the United States was functioning under the Articles of Confederation.

The Articles of Confederation created a confederation. The National Government consisted of a single legislative body, called Congress. The National Government had certain powers for the Articles of Confederation. At first there was no judicial or executive branch under the Articles. Problems came about because the government under the Articles of Confederation didn 't have enough power.

The Articles of Confederation had a very weak central government so the rights of the people would be secure. The Articles of Confederation was ratified by

The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.

The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
