Improvements To America During The Gilded Age

The Gilded Age was an era of tremendous industrial expansion, driven by technological advances and the influx of immigrants; this period of rapid change had an immense effect on the country's socioeconomic landscape, transforming it from an agricultural to an increasingly industrial one and urbanized economy. Innovations in transportation, such as steamboats, railroads, and streetcars, enabled the rapid movement of goods and people, connecting distant regions and allowing for the rapid expansion of trade and commerce. The industrial revolution brought large-scale businesses, new jobs, and a surge in production, but it also created economic disparities between the wealthy and the working class. Gilded age 1878-1889 was the age of fast growth of industry and immigrants in America history. The production of steel and iron rose radically than other time. In contrast, the Western resources increased such as silver,lumber, and gold. As well as the transportation also improved. Railroad develop and move goods from resources rich west to east.

With increasing in industrialization, the workplace had become more dangerous, and businesses refused to accept responsibility for injuries to workers. Great fortunes were amassed by the industries and millions of immigrants found hope on the idea America's opportunities. Technology began to replace the need for labor, which in turn lead farmers become more efficient in producing crops, and supplies tended to surpass demand regularly, consequently lowering prices. Therefore making the farmers struggle, and essentially making the poor man poorer and the rich man richer. The Gilded Age was a time of progress for the country.

Economic growth affected society during the Gilded Age in many different ways, both positive and negative. Economic growth affected it in such a way that there was vast wealth, industrial workers and farmers did not share in the new prosperity, and mass immigration. It was a time of Industrialization where the United States made a jump from farms to factories. Many things were happening in the United States during this particular time period, some would say it was an era of reform and others would say that it was an era of corruption. The Gilded Age was a time for prosperity.

The beginning of Industrialization was a time of great economic growth and social change in the United States. Though The Gilded Age made America the leading industrial nation, this widened the gap between the rich and the poor even more. The Progressive Era came after and was defined by various reforms. The unionization of the government and the reformers was a very important factor during this time period.

I choose to defend the prompt of my choice in more detail. In the 1870's, as the Civil War receded into memory, the United States became a leading Industrial power. Advances in technology and new access to the immense resources of the North American continent drove American Industrialization. This industrialization brought the growth of new American cities such as Chicago, and the arrival of a flood of immigrants from all over Europe to man the factories. During the Gilded Age, businessmen reaped enormous profits from this new economy.

There were no major party differences in the Gilded age. Democrats were mainly Lutheran and Catholic. They promoted education and opposed prohibition. Republicans were politically more successful. They believed in social issues like having moral standards and no regulation.

During the Gilded Age, America, and even parts of the world, were effected by new technological advancements made by American entrepeneurs and inventors. This includes the new steel making process (Bessemer Process), expansion of railroads across the country, the mass production of kerosene, and inventions of the lightbulb, AC and DC electricity, telegraph, the automobile, etc. Due to these advancements, travel was made more efficient, faster, and in some cases safer, everyday life was more efficient, and production was quicker. Without all of the advancements made during the time period, who knows what life would be like today. Would we have cell phones?

Many have called the period of 1865 to 1901 the “Gilded Age”, be-cause it was “shiny and pretty” on the outside but it was “rough and ugly” underneath. The term“Gilded Age” was actually coined by Mark Twain who satired the Gilded Age with a GoldenAge.

The Gilded Age was to describe America in the late nineteenth century. The outside of the US seemed glamorous and splendid alongside industrial development and massive economic growth. However, the dark sides were hidden beneath it. In my perspective, I believe we are living in the 2nd Gilded age.

In a time after the Civil War, when a transcontinental railroad was created connecting the East and West, people began to move and settle across the country, creating new urban cities and manufacturing hubs. It was because of the railroad that the Second Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age took place which rapidly increased the manufacturing of products through the new machines in factories and the spread of ideas by the telegraph and railroad. It was in this context that many farmers, as well, began to move West and experience a loss in the prices of their crops. It is also in this context that many workers were forced to work long, laborious hours with little pay. Farmers responded to industrialization in the Gilded Age by forming organizations such as the Granger movement and the Farmers Alliance as well as creating the Populist Party.

Economic Change in America Change is relevant within every time period, however, very substantial changes took place in the Americas following the War of 1812. Future success of the American society was to be dictated by the support the federal government supplied to domestic manufacturing and infrastructure to make drastic improvements economically. The imposition of high tariffs, advancements in transportation and the development of the cotton gin are among the most important changes made in the United States during this time.

Industrialist had a huge impact on the gilded age. The gilded age was a rapid expansion of industrialism and a massive jump in the population of immigrants in america. The industrialist during the gilded age such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt had a big impact because of their businesses. Vanderbilt was the first of the three to be a leader of industry. Vanderbilt made millions using the railroad system and built an empire with them.

Although society today may often times recognize this time as a prosperous time that allowed growth and improvements in techniques of everyday life. Many forget to examine what everyday life, then really consisted of. Studying this time and the struggles faced can allow people to perceive events during the Gilded Age with a different

What was the Gilded Age and why did Mark Twain refer to it as such? To help understand this question, one must know the meaning of the word gild. Per Merriam Webster, the term gild means to “to give an attractive but often deceptive appearance to” (Gild, n.d.). After the Civil War the American people had become tired of all the corruption and simply wanted to see an end to it and to have a stable economy. The Gilded Age was fashioned to be prosperous times for all Americans, promising wealth, and an end to past political corruption.
