In this final section of the book, Dick and Perry are caught and interrogated. Dick does not break easily, but ends up confessing the crime and blames the murder on Perry. Dewey, the detective interrogating Perry, tells Perry that Dick confessed. Perry at first does not believe, then Dewey gives a detail that only Dick and Perry would know. Perry then confesses and gives the full story. The two go to trial and are sentenced to death. There a few instances, where the two try to get appeals, and their execution is delayed by five years. However, despite the efforts of those defending them, they are both hung. One literary device that Capote makes great use of is imagery. “ The sudden rain rapped the high warehouse roof. The sound, not unlike the rat-a-tat-tat of parade drums , heralded Hickock’s arrival.” Not only does this sentence include imagery, but it also includes a metaphor or simile, and displays Capote’s high vocabulary. The sentence almost immerses the reader and puts them in the picture that Capote is trying to paint. He compares the sound of rain to a drum, to give readers an idea of how hard it was raining. He told it, in such a way that it makes the readers feel that Dick and Perry, are deserving of their execution. The crime and other crimes that they commit, truly show that this people are not the best criminals, and really do not feel all that bad for their crimes. Perry seems to think about the killings, but he, along with Dick, never truly apologized until he was faced with death. “The graves of the Clutter Family, four graves gathered under a single gray stone, lie in a far corner of the cemetery…” One can assume that Capote reminds reader, that the Clutters are dead, and there is nothing that will change that. Capote could be trying to show readers that killing the two guilty of the crime does not solve
