Individualistic Subcultures In Texas

Both constitutions contain similarities as well as some major differences. The first similarity would be the process of separation of powers. Separation of Powers was created by the “framers of the Constitution [who] feared too much centralized power” (PBS) and who knew that “the accumulation of all powers… in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many…may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny” (PBS).

In chapter 5 the article One Face of the Texas Tea Party by Julie McCarty from the “‘Politics in Practice” gives insight on how the people of Texas maintain checks and balances on their government. The Texas Tea Party is a conservative movement that is very popular in Texas, especially in Northeast Tarrant County or NETT. The Republican Party is a conservative party and so is the Texas Tea Party movement. The article confirms that Texas is largely a Republican Party state in terms of political influence. The Texas Tea Party is a very powerful political force in this part of the state.

Individualistic values in Texas support government activity only “to the extent that it creates opportunity for the individual achievement.” (Texas Political Culture). In other words, Texans are in favor of a limited state government and only encourage government activity when it is needed to create individual opportunities. The Texas Revolution has played a massive role in Texas history. In fact, without it, Texas wouldn’t be Texas! But, why was there a Texas Revolution to start with? In this essay, we will be discussing why there was a Texas Revolution and who was there to start it.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like in the early 1900s during the oil boom in Texas? This wasn’t just the oil boom that started a boom in Texas it was also all of the other jobs that came up because of it. The three main social changes in Texas during the oil boom were, the jobs it created for Mexican-American and African-American people, the growth of state colleges because of the oil found underground, and the increasing divorce rates. Oil being found in Texas is what caused all of these social changes and shaped Texas into the great state that it is today.

The history of political parties in Texas is marked by nearly a century of Democratic Party dominance followed by a realignment that shifted the balance of power in favor if the republicans. Political science professor Cal Jilson noted that the dominance of one party in Texas has been a result of the state’s dominant values. Both parties in Texas today reflect more conservative versions of their national counterparts. The other chapter talks about the Interest groups in Texas. Interest groups plays a critical role in all democratic systems of government.

In my essay I will provide three reasons why I do not believe Texas is operating within a democracy-a political system where the many rule. According to Author Robert Dahl, a democracy should provide opportunities for effective participation, equality in voting and inclusion of adults. There are socioeconomic factors- such ethnicity, education and income which are mentioned by author of our textbook, that impact voter participation. To begin, let’s look at the role a person ethnicity plays in a democracy. Next, examine the level of education and how it correlates to voting.

Briefly, in the evolution of the Texas political system, Texas’s history has been through many situations that shaped the political structure in Texas to become to what it is today. Many changes were responsible for the impact in the history of Texas such as the Texas revolution, the Alamo war with Mexico, military reconstruction act in 1867, etc. Before the war with Mexico, one of the most important impact in Texas history was the Republic of Texas Constitution in 1836. Texas and Mexico have an escalating tension and is responsible for the new change in the Texas state constitution. For the cause of the Republic of Texas Constitution in 1836, Texas begins by declaring its independence in 1836, established the Republic of Texas, and decided to adopt the new constitution.

As the United States faces many changes, every state under its regime is affected. This is why Texas always seems to be facing issue after issue. According to current college students attending different universities in the state of Texas, the problems Texas has recently been facing ranges from: high rates of accidents caused by highway constructions; influx of illegal immigrants crossing over especially here in Brownsville; to the smuggling of drugs into the country since the Gulf of Mexico is so close. However, surprisingly each of these students living in different cities within the state have expressed that the most worrisome current issue Texas has been struggling with is funding the educational system.

America has had a tumultuous existence, replete with war, progress, and ideologies. The most formidable of these is individualism, or the shift of society’s focus from the group to the individual and a growing emphasis on their personal needs and desires. Despite wide criticism, it has become the societal norm, spanning all generations, genders, races, and walks of life. Individualism, while indeed centered on the individual, is more accurately described as the changing and shifting relationship between the individual and society.

Texas was fortunate enough to have a few people step up and provoke change the status quo. Ross Perot fought hard with no remorse, and eventually led to the successful reformation of the Texas education system. While football may be what America is known for, quality education should be something it strives

Since the dawn of time Texas has been a revolutionary place where many cultures manifested and changed. Latino Culture has obviously been a major influence on Texas overall, this can be taken from the name itself and other things. Not only does “Texas” derive from spanish origin, but the progress of Latin culture into America and the civil rights movement has gone a long way and truly made a foundation for Texas since the 1500s . The majority of latinos in Texas can trace their ancestry to the racial mixture that happened after the conquest of Mexico by Spain near the 1520s.

Laws and rules that date back to times when it made it difficult for people to stand out and have a voice. Texas based their laws on family values, school prayer, against abortion, and against gay marriage. Another negative aspect of Texas its location next to Mexico. Since Texas is bordering Mexico, there has been a lot of illegal Mexican immigrants crossing the border unto Texas seeking jobs that belong to legal Texas citizens. Though has been stricter laws put in place to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over into Texas, there is still dispute over the issue
