“This man wishes to be accorded the same privilege as a sponge! He wishes to think!” (Lawrence & Lee, 1955, p. 94). This quote from Inherit the Wind represents the heart of the controversy known as the Scopes Trial in 1925. This historical court proceeding still affects us today, yet few know much about it. Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee helps to remedy this. Inherit the Wind is a fictional drama, but it is clearly based on the Scopes Trial. Thus, this play can help the reader not only understand what was going on when the actual case was debated ninety-one years ago, but also what the implications of it are today. The authors of Inherit the Wind transformed the historical account of the Scopes Trial into a work of fiction by changing the setting, genre, and language usage. The setting of the Scopes Trial and Inherit the Wind have both …show more content…
Bryan, Darrow, and Judge Raulston, among others, all use a plethora of terms that only people in their profession would employ. Many examples of this technical language are sprinkled throughout the trial transcript, such as, “Both the state and federal governments maintain courts, that those who cannot agree may have their difference properly adjudicated.” (“Tennessee vs. John Scopes,” 1925). A limited amount of this technical language is also used in Inherit the Wind, but the characters in the play also use figurative language that the participants in the Scopes Trial would not have occasion to use. In the dialogue of Inherit the Wind, one can find similes, metaphors, and verbal irony, such as in Act I when a character sarcastically remarks, “How flattering to know I’m being clipped,” (Lawrence & Lee, 1955, p. 25). Because the Scopes Trial is an actual court case, the language used is very business-like and formal. This alteration of language use is yet another change that the authors made in creating their
The last argument that made me not want to vote to convict John Scopes is the argument he made that religion has caused people to have different opinions. But some things should be between an individual , his maker or his God. Darrow says that the constitutional convention should leave the questions of religion between man and what he worships. Questions of religion shouldn’t be brought into the classrooms of
His role in the trail was of great importance. The Scopes Monkey Trials, as told by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee in the play “Inherit the Wind” was told to show the means of the trial between evolutionists or people who believe in the idea of evolution and creationist people who believe god put all organisms on earth. In Inherit the wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the
While they believed they were doing what was best, they were infringing upon the rights of everyone who did not hold the same beliefs as them. Another religious repercussion the Scopes Trial had was the fact that, even to this very day, those who hold the fundamental belief system of their religions especially Christianity protest and heatedly debate over evolution being taught in schools, when creationism is not allowed to be taught in the sciences. The fact that the way students should be taught in science, and what should be taught in school is still a controversial topic in today. It shows how large and important the Scopes case was in the minds of the American
The United States of America in the 1920s was a period of debate, of shifting values and changing social structures, and was, above anything else, a battleground of clashing ideologies that ultimately boiled down and exploded within the Scopes Trial of 1925. The Scopes Trial was not in any way, shape, or form primarily a conflict of simply one issue alone. Instead, the Scopes Trial was the height of the tensions that emerged within America during the infamous Roaring 20s, and it, unfortunately, pushed smaller, less-debated topics to the sidelines to make way for the main conflict. Issues which revolved around racial and gender tensions existed and were debated at length within society, but were completely ignored during the proceedings of the
The Scopes Trail, also commonly referred to as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was one of the most famous and remembered court room scenes in American history. This trail is the perfect representation of the conflicting perspectives and beliefs between modernists and fundamentalists. Through class discussion, videos and readings regarding the Scopes Trial, it is extremely evident that there are constant interactions between church and state and there will always be conflicting beliefs surrounding religion, science, and state. Throughout the course of this paper, I will discuss the context and background of the trial, the facts and information on what actually happened, and finally the legacy and why this specific trial is one of the most significant
The first way the quote applies to the play and the text, is because they give you an example of using
Furthermore, throughout history and in literature, societies that follow a rigid system of faith, such as the town of Hillsboro in Inherit the Wind, often censor scientific material from education – labeling the idea of science as taboo. However, censorship—in all regards—cannot be justified and must be acknowledged as immoral. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee, Inherit the Wind, although fictional and dramatized, acts as a recount of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial – also known as The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes. In July of
Introduction • As Atticus once said, “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (Lee, 274). • Prejudice should not be present in court to ensure everyone is given an equal chance. • However, this failed to occur in the case of Leo Frank. The jury was unable to rise above social prejudice and see the case with an open mind.
For example, an argument springs up between a man named John Proctor and Reverend Hale in which Proctor says, “ I like it not that Mr. Parris should lay his hand upon my baby. I see no light of
The change in diction ultimately affected the tone of the play. Our change was based upon our intended audience and our purpose. The change in diction gave the writing a more relaxed, informal, and
Inherit the Wind and Summer for the Gods are two works based on the Scopes Trial, however, there are some differences between the two. Inherit the Wind is a fictional play written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. It takes place in a fictional setting and also using fictional characters as a rendition of the famous Scopes Trial. Summer for the Gods is a highly regarded, non-fictional book that was published in the early 90s. It was written by author and Pulitzer Prize winner, Edward J. Larson.
The justice system has always been the heart of America. But like this country, it has many faults. Prejudice has played a major role in the shaping of this system. In the 1930’s the way a courtroom was set up was completely different from how it looks to day. In the book To Kill A MockingBird, Harper Lee shows just how different it is.
Perception defines the world around you. It affects every aspect of your being: your thoughts, actions, beliefs, etc… In the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch begins to understand just how impactful perception can be as she witnesses the deterioration of the dignity of Tom Robinson, a black man who is being tried for the rape of a white girl. In this intriguing read, Harper Lee demonstrates the theme of inaccurate allegations very effectively. More specifically, when inaccurate allegations that are solely based on perceptions are presented, the consequences can be significant, for others may suffer at great lengths.
The first literary device employed in Atticus’ summation speech is diction which is the choice of words or phrases one uses in speech or writing. One example of diction is the constant use of the word “gentlemen” when Atticus addresses the jury,“The witness for the state, with the exception of the sheriff of Maycomb County, have presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court, in the cynical confidence that their testimony would not be doubted, confident that you gentlemen would go along with them…”(paragraph 7). This example of diction is significant because by saying “gentlemen” continuously,
