Conflict is a daily phenomenon in nursing. It is defined as an internal or external struggle between two or more individuals who do not have mutual ideologies, values or feelings (Sullivan, 2012). Arguments in clinical settings are common, and emerge due to misunderstanding and assumptions (Yadav, Lim, Hashim & Saad, 2011). This happens when at least two people contributing to the same work activities but have different objective to complete (Yadav, Lim, Hashim & Saad, 2011). In a win-win situation, one must firstly put down their pride and focus on the issue at hand instead of blaming others. Secondly, once the incident is over, we must learn how to let go of our emotions and look at the problem objectively. We should not dwell in our emotions as it could affect professionalism (ref). Thirdly, exploring needs of others can be based off the conflict theory- The Human Needs Theory of Conflict (Clark,2009). Factors such as a sense of belonging in a group, self-esteem and attaining their goals are fundamental human needs. It is important to understand that everyone has different needs (Shakiba,2015). Lastly, it is to solve collaboratively by sitting down and talking about the problem together. Using phrases that start with ‘I’ as it identifies the other person 's needs and it does not push the blame to them. Overlapping problems are inevitable, hence these 4 steps will allow individuals to come together to find a common need that can be met by both parties
Communication in nursing is known for its life saving success as well as its greatest flaw in poor patient outcomes. There is always room for improvement and when communication is carried out efficiently, healthcare professionals have reaped the benefits. However, there have been many instances in which nurses have had to learn the hard way of how detrimental communication can be to patient safety. Through research and reviews of literature, the topic of patient safety related to handoff communication among units is analyzed.

Amongst all healthcare workers, the correct implication of inter-professional communication is integral in ensuring the best possible outcome for patients. The implication of effective communication between health care team members is just as important to safe, caring and effective patient care as the promotion of therapeutic communication between nurse and patient. Communication is a major part of a nurse’s role and they have to have varied communication skills in order to effectively communicate with the different sorts of professionals that they come across within the health setting. Although, there can be barriers for achieving effective inter-professional collaboration that range from culture barriers to personal beliefs. If these barriers
A patient and nurse interact and communicate and form an interpersonal system that is affected by situational factors in the environment (Alligood, 2013). Alligood (2013) also identifies the fundamental concepts of this theory as: perception, communication, interaction, transaction, self, role, growth and development, stress/stressors, coping, time, and personal space. These come from the personal and interpersonal system concepts. While the personal and social systems effect patient outcomes, the system that seems to have the biggest influence on this is the interpersonal system.

When viewing an interaction between a doctor and a patient, you will see both will change how they act and speak. For example their interaction was professional, compared to when a doctor or patient is with their coworkers or family they change themselves to be more sociable or themselves. Based on the company they have they change to how they think they should be seen. When it comes to conflict theory, when working under a hospital the person in charge is dominant compared to those who are working for that company. Sometimes in the healthcare field people who feel not in the same level as those above them may be put down and upset.

This situation presented an unresolved conflict between myself and the vice principal in my clinical placement. This conflict can be linked with the nursing concepts of interprofessional collaboration and communication, role clarification, and power. Therefore, it is understandable that nursing students working within an interprofessional team that does not demonstrate respect and understanding will result to ineffective care, health promotion delivery, and impede professional development. Interprofessional collaboration amongst health and non-health professionals is integral in optimizing health outcomes and promoting health.
A individual use of conflict should be used by many strategies impacted by the culture of the organization or institution but also by the personal beliefs and values. “The variables surrounding the conflict must be examined to understand and alter the choice of a particular behavioral approach to conflict”(Thomas,1976). When deciding the choice of outcome of a problem you should examine the facts and stay away from the assumptions. When managing conflicts, strategies should be utilized and reviewed so that the conflict can come to an collective solution. Some strategies to obtain during a conflict is the first strategy which is understanding that rushing to end the conflict will cause you to not be able to gather the appropriate information.
A relational conflict occurs when the goals of interdependent people are incompatible and at least one person to communicate to others about the incompatibility (Froemling et at, 2011). Conflict also has phases such as: latent, perceived, felt, manifest, and aftermath (Hingst, Lindsay PowerPoint). Any conflict brings positive and negative consequences. We can also learn with conflict and how to manage them. And relational conflicts also bring some issues based on behavioral, normative, personality and moral conflict.

1: - Dimension Indicators of Interpersonal Conflict TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT: - Constructive Conflict: - When a conflict arises among two parties while communicating, so long as both parties continue to concentrate on the problem or task, they will head towards a satisfactory solution. So long as they do their level best not to let themselves get involved personally, to such an extent that they lose their ability to see their mutual objectives and interests, the process is constructively resolved. Such conflict assures cooperative relationship among parties, for the involvement of all members during the applicative stage of their decisions, and also secures their future working relationships. Destructive Conflict: - Regardless of the importance of the issue or project to them, people don’t always easily handle discussions constructively.
