In an effort to create more efficient and effective health care services, decision makers and organizational leaders have looked to the implementation of interprofessional healthcare teams to deliver care together as opposed to the traditional model of healthcare delivery one that sees practitioners working alone in silos (Tomblin Murphy, Alder, MacKenzie & Rigby, 2010; Weinberg, Cooney-Miner, Perloff, Babington, & Avgar, 2011). In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) Study Group on Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Collaborative Practice (IPC) created a set of definitions to assist the health researchers, educators, policy developers, decision makers and others in developing IPE and IPC in their jurisdictions to both build capacity

An example of the importance of interprofessional training is that when a physical therapist works with a patient in the hospital. If the patient is in too much pain or is sleepy from the medication the physical therapist will not be able to accomplish much. However, if the physical therapist contacts the nurses beforehand and informs them of the time he will arrive to work with a patient, the nurse could make accommodations. This would allow the patient to accomplish the physical therapist’s intended tasks for the day and the patient’s recovery time could decrease exponentially. Nurse’s role has a unique contribution in the interprofessional team. The interprofessional team are group of individuals in a various healthcare disciplines communicating and working together towards common goals to provide quality, individualized care for patients. Each team members from different profession and occupation collaborates, supports, enhances, and provides knowledge, skills, and attitudes to coordinate processes and interventions. Nurse’s offers specialized service to society to meet the health care needs of their clients.

Collaboration among health care professionals is defined as assuming complementary roles and cooperatively working together, sharing responsibility for problem solving and making decisions to formulate and carry out plans for patient care. (Fagin, 2008). In any field of health care where physicians and nurses interact with one another for the purpose of quality patient care, it is vital for them to work together as one and understand the needs of their patients as well as each other’s roles and responsibilities. In short, teamwork should prevail for excellent patient service. Therefore, being in full partnership as a nurse with the physician and other healthcare professional is another recommendation that is applied by the RWJ-IOM report.

They should be good communicators, and actually listen to their patients, or families concerns, empathize, and provide clear concise information. An important value a healthcare worker should also embody is altruism. Nurses and medical professionals need prioritize their patients’ needs, without any regard for rewards or benefits. A persons’ health and welfare needs to be priority to a nurse, no matter what the situation. Josie’s Story highlighted the importance of altruism, and the need for nurses and doctors to take a step back and truly listen.

Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.

Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.

This philosophy reflects the lesson in Matthew 7:12, which states, “ So everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I personally value the characteristic of kindness, which encompasses active listening, professionalism, and accountability. In order to be kind, nurses must actively invest time in their patients and express to them that they care for them and their family members. My belief is that if my family member was in the hospital I would want the nurse to show kindness to them, therefore I will show compassion to others family members. I value the art of kindness, because sometimes it is not easy to show love to patients who are combative or disrespectful.

I used to overlook this notion as a simple concept that’s easy to accomplish within a team. However, I’ve learnt that it is not so easily achieved. Functional interprofessional collaboration is integral in delivering optimal health care and promotion. Successful interprofessional collaboration is important for nursing students, such as myself, as it is a concept and skill that is applicable to multiple contexts. My experience in an elementary school has given me the chance for mutual learning and collaboration with non-health professionals within the broader context of the community.

Introduction Teamwork builds up the ability of nurses and other healthcare providers to implement higher quality and a more holistic care. Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse.
