An Interprofessional health care team is a group of health providers from different professions working together to reach a common goal to meet the needs of a patient. It is the combination of using knowledge, skills, and value to work together with other healthcare members, with patients, their family, and the communities to improve the patient’s health outcomes. Teamwork is the fundamental to the delivery of nursing care and to their ethical commitment to patients. As healthcare delivery changes to become more interconnected, the more important in coordinating the care between physician, nurses, social workers, and other disciplines has become. An example of the importance of interprofessional training is that when a physical therapist works with a patient in the hospital. If the patient is in too much pain or is sleepy from the medication the physical therapist will not be able to accomplish much. However, if the physical therapist contacts the nurses beforehand and informs them of the time he will arrive to work with a patient, the nurse could make accommodations. They should be good communicators, and actually listen to their patients, or families concerns, empathize, and provide clear concise information. An important value a healthcare worker should also embody is altruism. Nurses and medical professionals need prioritize their patients’ needs, without any regard for rewards or benefits. A persons’ health and welfare needs to be priority to a nurse, no matter what the situation. Josie’s Story highlighted the importance of altruism, and the need for nurses and doctors to take a step back and truly listen.
Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
This philosophy reflects the lesson in Matthew 7:12, which states, “ So everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I personally value the characteristic of kindness, which encompasses active listening, professionalism, and accountability. In order to be kind, nurses must actively invest time in their patients and express to them that they care for them and their family members. My belief is that if my family member was in the hospital I would want the nurse to show kindness to them, therefore I will show compassion to others family members. I value the art of kindness, because sometimes it is not easy to show love to patients who are combative or disrespectful.

I used to overlook this notion as a simple concept that’s easy to accomplish within a team. However, I’ve learnt that it is not so easily achieved. Functional interprofessional collaboration is integral in delivering optimal health care and promotion. Successful interprofessional collaboration is important for nursing students, such as myself, as it is a concept and skill that is applicable to multiple contexts. My experience in an elementary school has given me the chance for mutual learning and collaboration with non-health professionals within the broader context of the community.
