I had the opportunity to interview my good friend Andy Yarborough about his experience as a board member of Trafficking Hope Louisiana. Trafficking Hope Louisiana a nonprofit that provides two primary services. The first is to provide transitional, short, and long-term care for sex-trafficking victims. The other is to educate the public about human trafficking issues. At any given time, Trafficking Hope Louisiana serves five to fifteen women who are referred by Texas, Florida, and Louisiana state officials, as well as, Homeland Security.
Andy chose to be on the board for Trafficking Hope Louisiana due to his passion for its cause. When he was nineteen years old, Andy traveled to India and saw the toxic effects of the international sex trade.

Andy did not have a formal “onboarding” process and would have liked more background knowledge on board functions. As mentioned throughout our course material, it is important for board member to have a solid understanding for their roles and expectations. Andy would have appreciated receiving a board job description or even going through a board-specific professional development. One thing that helped Andy learn board governance was his experience working on the Executive Team for a large mega church. He was had some familiarity with developing long-range decisions and working with the church’s board of trustees. However, as Professor Henderson mentioned throughout the asynchronous material, every nonprofit board is different. Thus, Andy had to learn what worked for his particular …show more content…
For board members, Andy emphasized that they should be passionate about the mission of the organization and be cognizant of their reasons for joining the board. Andy joined the board only because he wanted to serve and further the organizational mission of Trafficking Hope, not because he was looking for prestige. His focus was on serving the clients, not gaining rewards for his board participation. In a similar vein, Andy stressed that executive directors should seek board members who are both committed to the vision and can add value to the organization. Executive directors should resist the urge to recruit individuals on the board solely based on how they could possibly meet a need. This advice helps new executive directors to better understand their boards and helps potential board members decide if they should commit to an organization or not. The nonprofit benefits when the entire board values its mission and its executive director is able to be a key change
“Executive should be trained in business skills, that nonprofit managers programs be located in schools” (Worth, 2014). But, I feel if the hiring process for the overseers of the section are chosen correctly they can

Going into this interview project I was curious to learn more about the experiences that immigrants had to go through. My interviewee, Mario, is an 18 year old immigrant that migrated to America from Bolivia at the age of 10. I have known Mario since middle school and we’ve been friends since then. We have grown up around the same area too and now we both attend the University of Maryland.
But gradually Andy allows himself to get to know others and for others to know him. He shows he has a very confident side. According to Oxford Journals, “Confidence in one’s abilities generally enhances motivation,” (Benabou and Tirole). The first time the audience sees this is when the inmates are tarring the roof and Andy decides to suggest that he can do Hadley, the chief guard, and other guards’ taxes. He was even threatened to get thrown off the roof, and yet he continued to
Human trafficking produces billions of dollars in profit every year, it is right behind drug trafficking as the most lucrative form of crime throughout the world. (DHS website). Victims of human trafficking rarely come forward due to the threats of murder, threats of killing their loved ones/friends, as well as having nowhere else to go because they have been ostracized from their own family and their “pimp” is their family. Another issue of why victims do not come forward is that they are afraid of law enforcement so they may go to jail, etc. (DHS website)

The United States abolished slavery in 1865, the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (The United States Constitution). We never thought that over one-hundred years later there would be a new form of slavery that has affected so many people around the globe. Human trafficking is another name for modern-day slavery, where the victims involved are forced, coerced and deceived into labor and sexual exploitation. Most human trafficking victims are forced into the trade by the false promises made regarding job opportunities. Many women from third world countries are lured into this trade with the bait of false marriages or false jobs.
Have you ever seen this picture? This picture is a lot more than a poetic protest on media. It is the reality. In the 21st century, the average cost of a human is $90 globally.
As I watched the documentary “Road Beyond Abuse,” I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. From disgusted and disappointed to impressed and joyful, I felt it all. It truly disturbed me to hear about the experiences both Michael McCain and Johnnetta McSwain endured. I was disgusted that no one protected these innocent children from being verbally abused, beaten, raped, and left to fend for themselves. It was shocking to hear that these children withstood this amount of abuse from their family members until they were teenagers.
Andy then starts doing tax returns and doing the prisons/wardens money. Andy wants to expand the library and get new books and the warden tells him to write letters to the state. So he decides to write one letter a
There are several advantages to being a part of a non profit organization. When nonprofit organizations are looking for employees, they search for the best and most interesting ones.
