Self-reliance. Not very many people have this. Today, our society has grown to become so reliant on one another that people forget how important being independent is in their lives. Ayn Rand shows that this is true through her dystopian novel, Anthem. She does this by developing a protagonist, Equality-72521, who seeks to have the privilege of exploring and taking risks.

Although my experiences are not as drastic as hers, she inspires me to make my own decisions. As I grow, I realize more that my independence is important because I cannot rely on other people as much since everyone’s experiences are different. For example, when they were children in Guyana, my parents had to walk miles to school while I am able to take the bus to school. Although my parents and I went to school up until the same age, our experiences lead to different approaches in situations. The transition from middle school to high school was eye opening because in middle school the class would move together, whereas in high school, everyone went their own ways.

Society has gone global; we are constantly impacted by globalization, defined as the flow of goods, people, and ideas across national borders. Globalization is characterized in two distinct ways: the acceleration of movement across time and space, and the connection of people in different spaces due to economic inter-dependency. The documentary "Chain of Love" builds upon this concept when it claims that "a new commodity has been added to the global economy: care and love." In fact, entire industries are often based off of what is termed as care work or reproductive labor. Reproductive labor is that which is necessary for us to sustain our lives from one day to the next.

The process of gaining independence is an important part of who a person is and how they overcome issues they come across in their lifetimes. Several characters from the book, The Bean Trees, are either independent from the beginning of the story or develop to become independent. Due to these characters strong, self-supporting personalities, they can solve the issues they come across in a self-sufficient manner without help from others. These characters are never stuck relying on others for help or forced to wait for others. In the book The Bean Trees, several characters personify independence throughout the work, which supports the idea independent people can self-sufficiently overcome obstacles they come across.

Individuality means the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind. Independence means freedom from control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others ("The Definition Of Independence"). Within the three texts that I chose for my project, a person can see many examples of individuality; including Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird, Lily Owens from The Secret Life of Bees, and from the character A in Every Day. All of these characters show that fear can only limit your potential if you allow it to. They also show that to become an individual one must develop independence, and not follow the influence of others.

Adult’s freedom involve, living wherever they want, buying whatever they want, and working wherever they want. What does freedom mean to me? It means I get to do what I want without being judged. I’m free to live where I want, and eat what I want.

Within the mission field, families have many needs, especially when it comes to psychological and spiritual needs. Children specifically have needs for education, growth, and development. And families as a whole for unity, resilience, satisfaction, healthy communication, as well as a sense of inclusion and interaction. This interaction includes those within the mission field they are serving and their mission organization as a whole, as well as those supporting them financially and through prayer back home. These families in this context are surrounded by stress and strain stemming from the cross cultural settings.
