Advantages Of Public School

Methods of Research I began my study into this issue after reading about the proposed bill on the Home School Legal Defense Association’s (HSLDA) website. I began by reading the proposed bill’s re-wording and verifying what the new changes would mean to homeschooling parents in Iowa. I then conducted a questionnaire of my own among homeschooling families regarding the way their state handles homeschool regulations, and lastly, I compiled a list of resources including: results from testing homeschooled students vs public schooled students, curriculum choices available to homeschooling families, and a historical look at homeschooled students who have vastly contributed to our country’s rich history. Task 1.

Obesity has been a huge problem for most children in America. Every generation, it becomes more of a problem than what it was the generation prior to it. Many children suffer with this problem today because of the lifestyles that they live. Children tend to lack adequate amounts of exercise that they need because of the many distractions that they face every day. Most of the day, kids are sitting around the house watching television, playing video games or on some type of a new device that has just been released.

If I chose to play games or extracurricular activities I knew I had to juggle my time of play versus school. If I completed school for the week in the three days then I had a four day weekend, but if I didn 't take care of that schoolwork then that meant I had no weekend and privileges were taken away. By me knowing what my work was in advance for the week, it was my responsibility to accomplish that goal. I believe that homeschool made me mentally and physically sharp because I had more time to run and play in the yard and go to field trips like the space center, the Houston zoo, museums, robotic competitions and horse rescue rehabilitation ranches. As a family we were able to take vacations and trips when most students were in school which allowed more attention on tours at points of interest.

Cook at home: Studies show that families who cook at home more often are much less likely to have obese children (“Avoid Childhood Obesity”). Have healthy snacks: Always keep healthy snacks in the house such as nuts or fruit, instead of the alternatives like chips and cookies (“Avoid Childhood Obesity”). Drink lots of water: Drinking more water helps children stay hydrated, healthy, and keeps them less hungry and less likely to eat more (“Avoid Childhood Obesity”). Finally, Family time: A study by Harvard researchers concluded that benefits of eating dinner and doing things as a family reduced high-risk adolescent behaviors and improved performance at school (“Avoid Childhood Obesity”). If these steps can be taken to help the children of our nation, this epidemic will no longer be the problem that it has become today, but that would also require outside sources to

The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well. As one can see the community health is greatly effected by the high rates of obesity among its individuals. Children in particular have a massive effect because not only are they the future of that community, but they also influence the schools in that region. Healthy People 2020 regard obesity in America as a very serious problem especially among children. It is such a major issue because childhood obesity easily leads to obesity in adulthood that increases the risks for heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and cancer (Nutrition).

At home, parents can help prevent their children from becoming overweight by changing the way the family eats and exercises together. The best way children learn is by example, so parents need to lead by example by living a healthy lifestyle. Prevention of obesity should begin from the first year of life, valuing growth in height and weight of the child together. In children proper nutrition is essential because they are in a stage of rapid growth, the first year triple their weight and increase half its size. At each stage of childhood food is taking a variation and the number of collisions and schedule, so it is important to spend time with a lot of responsibility for that children are taking a feed from small.

Childhood to adolescent obesity in America is becoming an over-whelming issue. Most schools have decided that physical education isn’t critical due to budget cuts and the increased pressure to excel in standardized tests. One out of three children in the U.S. is over-weight or obese according to the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. I believe that childhood obesity is the result of lack of exercise and poor diet due to a fast-paced lifestyle. Junk food is attractive for many reasons including price, taste, and convenience.

Charter schools have a big effect in our community . There are many advantages and disadvantages of attending a charter school. For example, one advantage is that studies shows, “students make greater progress than students in traditional public schools. ”(California Charter) This means those who attend a charter school, gain more knowledge than students who attend traditional public schools.

However, what homeschooling does provide are flexibility and freedom. The flexibility to choose materials the child is interested in learning more about and the freedom to choose where and when to spend family time together. Families are not held to an 8-3 school schedule with truants and late slips. They have the ability to plan vacations according to what works for their family, not what the school schedule allows for them. Many states have heavy regulations on homeschooling as far as the requirements and responsibilities go.

Home schooling is a trending concept that is popular mostly in US and around the world. Home schooling preferred often by the parents that have environmental concerns, religious beliefs, lack of confidence to the education quality of the public and private schools and inadequacy of curriculum. They believe that they can give better education to their children at home. According to Jamie Martin (Homeschooling 101: What Is Homeschooling, 2012), home schooling began to grow in the 1970s, when popular writers and researchers such as John Holt and Dorothy and Raymond Moore wrote about the educational reforms and they alleged that home schooling is a valid educational alternative.

One common misconception about public education is that it is the only valid method of education in modern society. This is not true. There are a plethora of private and home education options available nationally. On average, homeschooled students receive considerably higher scores on standardized tests than public schooled students. While median scores for most standardized tests for public school students are around the fiftieth percentile, the median score of homeschoolers on the same standardized tests are in the eightieth percentile or higher, in all subjects.

First of all, statistically speaking, “The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests”(“Research Facts on Homeschooling”). This includes tests such as the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and annual benchmark tests. Because of this reason, many colleges actively seek homeschooled students. Top colleges are scouting homeschoolers, and it’s due to the fact that homeschoolers “go to and succeed at college at an equal or higher rate than the general population”(“Research Facts on Homeschooling”). Also, studies have proved that “Homeschool freshmen in their first semester at college average a 3.37 GPA to the 3.08 of other freshmen, and continue to keep their advantage even into senior year with 3.46 versus 3.16”(“The Homeschooler’s Guide to Getting into College”).

Homeschooling is an educational option that allows parents to teach their children at home instead of sending them to public schools. It is held that "homeschooled children now number 1.2 million in the United States and the number is steadily growing" (Farris, 1997, p. 4). Ray (cited in Mirochinck & McIntyre, 1991). Some Parents believe that sending their children to public schools in which qualified teachers are responsible for educating them is beneficial .However, other parents believe that it is better for their children to be educated at home by people who know their needs. In this paper, I intend to argue with educating children at home.

Currently, it is estimated that over one million families school their children at home. Most of these families include a breadwinner and a stay-at-home parent who does most of the teaching, although there are single parent families and dual career families who home school.” according to Teach Target. Personally, I believe that homeschooling isn’t the best option for kids; they rather go to school to help them with their social life, their level of understanding and to help them get inspired by the surroundings. There are a lot of reasons why parents should stop homeschooling their children and send them to public or private schools.
