Is Sugar Toxic

I attended the event titled Unnatural Causes Bad Sugar on Thursday, October 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. The event centered on the ways in which many factors influence people’s lives and significantly impact health. The first part of the event centered on watching a short video that focused on the damage to health that Native American tribes faced after they lost their water. There was a large increase in the amount of Native Americans who got diabetes and who were dying. It was thought that biology and genes were one of the main causes behind the increase in diabetes, but in reality there were many other factors. Geographic location, social and economic class status, and income level has an impact on a person’s health.

FED UP In the US from since the turn of the century, obesity has been a rising and very serious issue. In the 1980’s, western culture experienced a fitness surge, and the major food corporations began producing new products that were “fat free”, but the issue was fat free food did not taste as good so people would not buy it. To compensate the taste, the food companies replaced the fat with sugar.

The book Sugar Changed the World gives the reader a very informational tone throughout the events occurring in the story. The author's perspective and purpose for writing Sugar Changed the World is to tell a story of how sugar impacted the world negatively and positively,and they respond to conflicting viewpoints by addressing the facts and proving the historians wrong. The writer informs the reader about the positive impact of sugar and how it changed the world because in the book it said "The end of slavery was a great step for human rights”. “On August 1, 1838 all slaves would be free” (pg 104).

It was also a great sweetener for drinks like coffee and tea, but best of all it was used to make chocolate (Document 4). That is a lot of health problems that are occurring in America right now just because people are consuming to much extra sugar in their beverages. A study from Harvard’s school of public health states, “Two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight or obese” (“Sugary Drinks”). "Your body gets all it needs from sugar naturally occurring in food so all this added sugar just means a lot of empty calories that can add inches to your waistline and contribute to diabetes, depression, and even an increase in suicidal behaviors." Because of this, it could lead on to people wanting to or having thoughts about self-harm.
