It is very hard for a family to accept that they lost their loved ones because of murder. Some families may be able to go through the grieving process while some may not. Some may seek for justice while some may lose their hope that they may not get the justice that their loved ones deserved. Probably because of the lack of effective criminal justice system. The death of loved ones can be traumatic.

My passion lies in helping underrepresented and marginalized groups who face oppression and injustices by dominant society, like Bryan, and this realization of just how many lives are affected by capital punishment makes me consider studying this particular field, as well. It is easy to simply right off these people and define them by their actions, without realizing that they too are someone’s child, sibling, partner, friend, and/ or parent. One thing that really stood out to me was that when these death row inmates’ families come to visit, they have to sit behind a glass window, as if their loved one is potentially dangerous to them. However, when they are meeting with a paralegal or a lawyer, then they are allowed to sit together, without any barrier, which only emphasizes just how inhumane these inmates are treated and disregarded as. Some criminals deserve to die because they should not have the privilege to live 30 years after, from being sentenced to death for committing first degree murder. For example, there has been a case, in 1984, where Kermit Alexander’s family was murdered. As a matter of fact, the criminals have not been executed since they have received the death sentence.

Especially in Iran, the government did not have the authority to condemn the killer. The family did. For killers,young or old were persecuted. Killers are humans as well and they should deserve a second chance. Mercy from these families can be able to give out a second chance in life.

How then, are others able to make us sympathize with not only murderers, but people who have committed horrendous crimes? For example, the media is constantly attempting to humanize rapists and even terrorists with phrases like “lone wolf” or “alienated and adrift.” Such phrases make some of us want to pity the criminal. However, there is more to the scope of victims than the person directly involved in the crime. The Death Penalty, loss of life due to previous crimes and actions, is believed by some to be extremely costly, inhumane, and cruel unlike some others whom believe it is just, right, and provides closure. Some believe that it is not right to punish and kill a human for actions they have done because, they believe that the inmate should have another chance. Then others believe that it is right to punish someone for their actions especially if their actions involve killing another or multiple humans.

They do not think that they vote for a fellow human being to be killed. Death penalty and the egoistic mindset humans have is proof that humanity is starting to fade. It needs to be pointed out that the public support of death penalty has a huge effect on either it will stay or not. In conclusion, I would like to add that we are all humans and we should be treated that way.
