Jamestown DBQ

The Jamestown colonists had many risks to get to where they were. There wasn’t enough food/water supply for the abundance of people. The food/water they did have was mostly spoiled. Another reason, is sickness throughout the ships. Since it wasn’t hygienic or safe, many did get diseases.

Valley Forge - The Camp Of Death Valley Forge is a winter camp that has caused loads of deaths. There is low supplies and they have very poor weather conditions. I wouldn’t want to stay at Valley Forge because I wouldn’t want to be apart of that type of environment. In the engraving of a painting by Henry Powell it shows George Washington presenting Congressional Committee to soldiers at Valley Forge. (Doc B) If you look closely you can see the soldiers have no shoes, which shows the lack of supplies they have.

Well many colonists died because of their water supply, their relationship with the natives, and because of their knowledge of survival. These factor lead to early death for most of the colonist. The water supply for Jamestown was brackish, or filthy, and lead to disease.

Colonial Identity DBQ In the 1600’s as the first English colonists were settling in America, there was little difference between the identities of the colonists and the identities of the citizens still in England. The colonists were very much still English citizens who just took an opportunity, whether it was to make money or practice their religion. As time wore on this changed, as the colonists in America dealt with many experiences very different from those living in England. This included dealings with aggressive natives and the overall struggle for survival.

One great question about Jamestown was that why did so many early colonist die? Three possible answers to that question is that the colonists were unprepared, the location was horrible, and because unexpected things happened. Most of the colonists were unskilled, and only a few were crafters (gunsmiths and blacksmiths), doctors, and hunters. They also picked a horrible location near many Native tribes. Lastly, they had no idea what things could happen while they were there.

Many of the Jamestown colonist died in the New World but the question is what caused it to happen. Some events and things that contributed to killing them may be shocking because we don't expect it to affect them like this. There could be many reasons why. Though, the real reasons we think the colonist died is because there was bacteria and sickness, even huge drought and winter came by, and because they we not careful about what they did. These events and things affected the Colonist greatly.

In March 1617, Pocahontas got sick (possibly tuberculosis or pneumonia) and died. The mission of the New World was to convert Indians to Christianity, but the plan failed. Opechancanough soon launched an attack on the colony killing men, women, children, etc.; they were killed in their houses, yards, gardens, and around the plantation (Horn 2005, 255). Because of Opechancanough’s attack, the colony faced another starvation period. Many of the English died, due to lack of a food supply.

Only sixty of the colonist had survived the harsh winter that will forever be known as the starving times. Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Summers arrived in May 1610 with 150 people and some supplies from the Bermudas only to find the walking anomalies of Jamestown. Sir Thomas Gates took over as the new governor and order the immediate abandonment of Jamestown. They labored into June to build 4 ships to carry them all back to England. Once all were boarded and sailing down the James river, they spotted another ship headed their way.

What happened at Chesapeake Bay that caused so many deaths. In the early 1600’s English Colonists were set out to search for new land and they wanted to get rich. Why did so many Colonists die in Jamestown there are three reasons why so many early English Colonists died in Jamestown. The first reason why so many Colonists died was because their water.

During 1607-1611, early Jamestown colonists died to many reasons like starvation, occupations, and drought. Colonists did not have many resources to live a long life. That is why they died so fast through 1607-1611. Colonists died because they tried to find a new settlement for more land so they can have more resources and for a stronger defense, but instead they got attacked and there was not a lot of food there to feed them all. Colonists died by attacks by Indians.

Valley Forge was a winter camp 18 miles away from Philadelphia, where George Washington took his troops during 1777 and 1778. The British army is comfortable in Philadelphia, while Valley Forge has harsh conditions with the cold weather and the lack of supplies. I will not reenlist when my 9-month enlistment is over. I will not reenlist for these reasons, diseases, lack supplies, and cold weather and smoky air.

Hook/Background Information: Valley Forge was a place for heros but many left. Soldiers died of hunger and harsh weathers. Was Valley Forge that bad? Valley Forge was a place of misery. Many soldiers abandoned the forge and others abandoned tragically.

Some of the deaths of these colonists were caused by freezing to death, some of the deaths were caused by starvation because the animals that they ate where scarce and hibernating and some of the nuts and berries that they gathered were covered in snow. Also many colonists died because of diseases from europe and diseases from the lack of sanitation in the New World. One substantially important difference between Plymouth

Mainly caused by the difference between leaders. Bradford was a religious man that made him a family figure who cared about his fellow colonists. The colonists who accompanied Smith were men that were looking to get rich. They didn't care about their fellow colonists. Greed was the negative characteristics that lead to their downfall.
