The original destination for the ships was Port Royal. The Kiawah Indians in that area convinced the settlers that Charles Towne was a better choice for farming, The Carolina reached land and anchored at Sewee Bay/Bull's Island on March 17; Port Royal about March 21 and stayed 2 days; then to St. Helena; then to Kiawah, Ashley River, arriving early in April.

The Jamestown and Massachusetts colonies were established by English settlers in the early 1600’s; however even though they share a common national heritage, each developed in their own fashion due to their unique circumstances, geographical location, and experiences. Jamestown, located in present-day Virginia, was established in 1607 by the Virginia Company with the goal of finding gold and other valuable resources that could be exported back to England. The early years of the colony were marked by disease, starvation, and conflict with the Indigenous tribes in the area. The colony eventually established and stabilized itself, and rapidly expanded with the arrival of tobacco cultivation from the Caribbean and the arrival of additional settlers.

Jamestown is a place where a lot of death happened. People died from starvation, disease, saltwater poisoning, dehydration, and attacks from the Indians and Spaniards. 13,000 Indians lived around Jamestown. When the people that lived in Jamestown set sail with 108 men they arrived at an island. When they got there they expected the Indians to welcome their arrival but instead they killed some of the men.

On April 27, 1584 Raleigh sent an expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to search the east coast of North America. The expedition reached Roanoke on July 4th and and began to befriend the local natives, the Secotans and Croatoans. Barlowe and two Croatoans, named Manteo and Wanchese, returned to England where they informed Raleigh about the politics and geography of their land. While Greenville waited for the ships to come he started relations with the Spanish and built a fort. The Elizabeth came after the fort was built. Greenville eventually got tired of waiting for the other ships and left on June 7. The expedition succeeded and all the rest of them found each other in July. One of the ships called The Red Lion dropped off the passengers and left for Newfoundland.

In August 1587 a second group of settlers arrived at Roanoke Island. The group was led by John White and consisted of 115 people including Johns White's wife and daughter,his granddaughter was the first english child born in the America.

It was, at the time, the largest, and the most important of the American colonies. It had the largest population (approximately 5,000). The colony was a very wealthy and influential colony.

The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.

In September of 1620, a ship called the Mayflower started its voyage from England, with 102 passengers, that were looking for new homes. The voyage lasted 66 days, they arrived near the tip of Cape Cod, then they made their way towards Massachusetts and then they crossed it . The Pilgrims started working on establishing a village at Plymouth. During winter they mostly stayed on the ship because there were contagious diseases spreading.
