During the 1600's there use to be two very important settlements, the North, also known as the Puritans which is a type of religion in the North, and the South, also known as Jamestown which is located in Virginia. There were many differences between these two settlements like their economy, religion, climate, trade, and the way people live their lives. With the North their climate involved longer winters, mild and short summers. “The cold weather caused less disease compared to the warmer regions.” As of the South, their climate was the complete opposite.

Being the first two well-known places in which the English would set out to colonize in 1607 and 1620, Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts hold very separate set of beliefs, standards, and outlooks on life then and the future to come. While paving the way for things such as slavery, taxes, ownership of land, inclusion of women, tobacco and government assemblies, John Smith and the people of Jamestown became a classical foundation for new life and economic growth for the new world that is, the United States. On the other hand, William Bradford and his people began to realize the intentions of the Church of England were unholy and had strayed away from God’s teachings from the Bible. With this in mind, the Pilgrims set on a voyage to the new world to seek religious freedom. As we know it, the Pilgrims sought for peace and a new way of living that was fair, just and free from religious corruptions.

They also both had a good trading system setup and were part of the global economy. They both followed a denomination of christianity whether it was protestant or puritan. The two groups also settled on the east coast and had conflicts with the native residents.

The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.

There were many differences between the two colonies when it came down to their political systems. First, both colonies were greatly influenced by Governors. This influence can be seen by Sir William Berkeley when he describes that the, “Governors…laid the Foundation of our wealth and industry on the vices of men”. This statement shows that the governors that were in the Jamestown colony had a profound influence during the beginning of their colony. Another thing to note about the Jamestown colony was in Frethorne’s letter when he stated that, “we took two alive and made slaves of them… it was by policy”.

These colonies struggled from the same things, such as disease, hunger, and unpreparedness. Also, there were three main differences between the colonies:location, reasons for the colony, and relationship with the natives were all included. There were different reasons for the colonies. Jamestown was sponsored by the king in 1607. It was intended to find gold and bring it back to Europe.

Jamestown colony and Plymouth colony have are two similar colonies but at the same time are so very different. One similarity is that each colony had a large number of deaths after winter. One difference is that Plymouth colony had a good relationship with the Native Americans and Jamestown didn't have a good relationships with them. A second difference is that the two colonies came for different reasons.
