To human beings songs and music in general play a huge part in our lives. In many situations people turn to music. For example when someone is down or upset they might play an upbeat song to try and help their mood. Another example is when someone might be stressed or just unstrung; they turn to music or a certain song to help calm themselves. However music can just as easily induce the same feeling as well as take them away. An example of this is when we hear the “Jaws” theme song and the feeling of danger is immediately felt. In “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck Kino plays certain songs in his head depending on the mood and/or situation. For instance in the beginning of the story Kino plays the song of the family. “In Kino’s head there …show more content…
The song of evil is also used in the beginning of the story. It is used to indicate danger or hostility toward Kino and/or his family. “In his mind a new song had come, the Song of Evil, the music of the enemy, of any foe of the family, a savage, secret, dangerous melody, and underneath, the Song of the Family cried plaintively.” (P.5) this is when the scorpion is first noticed by Kino and Juana. Scorpion venom is fatal enough to adults to where the adults would only get sick if the venom were caught in time. However for a baby it could mean death. The scorpion represents the song of evil because it is a threat to the family. Another example of the song of evil is when Kino realizes he is being followed by the trackers. “They were the trackers, they could follow the trail of a big horn sheep in the stone mountains.” (P.73) this represents the song of evil because the trackers are a threat to the …show more content…
To Kino songs are a big part of him. He assoc iated the song of evil to a threatening situation and the song of the family is associated with family like moments such as P.5 Ch.1 when the major events haven’t yet happened and things are just peaceful. The song of the pearl is associated with triumph and beauty however the song changes for the worst to become insane and distorted as Kino states on P. 89 Ch. 5. The song of evil is associated with dangerous situations or situations that threaten the family. Underneath all of these songs however is the importance of family. The pearl’s song is triumphant because it means that Kino can make his family’s life better, and it changes because it eventually brings danger to the family. The song of evil usually represents threats to the family. And the song of the family to Kino is
Unit 1 Essay “Every man has a treasure.” The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck, and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers. Kino is very happy at the beginning, and then starts to get bad, because of when he finds the pearl, and he starts out by being violent. Greg Ridley was so excited to play basketball, but then he realizes there are things more important. Both Greg in “The Treasure of Lemon Brown’” and Kino from The Pearl go through life experiences that change their ideas of what is important.
This shows how the blackness of her hair symbolizes her evilness. Another example of darkness symbolizing evil is in the quote, “If the hero and heroine go off to live happily ever after, then what
In comparison to what happened to Kino in the novel is that once he found the pearl he had become the enemy of everyone. For example like the doctor at first he didn’t want to attend Kino because they were poor and had nothing to offer. But once the news got out that he had the pearl of the world he became interested. Both Kino’s and Callie’s fortune have brought people
Rumi, a Tajik poet once said, “Greed makes man blind and foolish, and makes him an easy prey for death.” In John Steinbeck’s The Pearl, Kino proves that with wealth comes undeniable evil. Despite Kino’s want for more and the best for his family, the malevolent events that come with the pearl eventually led to the death of his beloved son, Coyotito. Throughout the novel the pearl showed signs of hope for the family, but those signs of hope eventually led to feelings of greed.
Music can bring the brightest of joys that keeps us moving through our dull and boring lives. An example of this joy is Ishmael Beah’s life as a boy soldier in his book A Long Way Gone. As he tells you his story, he tells of his dance group with his friends, the times he heard music in the middle of war, and how music saved him from the madness that brewed within him. Music has the unique ability to create peace in a person’s life despite the difficulties surrounding them, and to bring a constant reminder of who they are as a person.
This can also be seen as a references to biblical stories of the Devil. Not only does the monster know he has evil, but he relates himself to the Devil because of the evil he has done. He decides that the only way to rectify what he has wronged would be to go out in a fiery
The main protagonist, Kino, wakes up to the crowing of roosters and the crashing of the beach waves. His wife, Juana, had woken up moments before to greet him with shimmering eyes. Their son, Coyotito, was still sound asleep in his hanging cradle. Kino listens to his surroundings to create a mental song, a skill used by the ancients of his people with whatever they had heard. The family had all woken up, eaten breakfast, and started the day.
It’s important to note that the Hebrew book, Song of Solomon has another name which is commonly used; Song of Songs. The title of this book means “the most beautiful of songs” or a superlative, unmatched piece. This book comes after Psalms and Proverbs in the Old Testament and is a full collection of songs, or poems, in which a woman and a man tell about their love for each other. Sometimes they are speaking to themselves, sometimes to each other or to friends and in some of the poems they seem to be remembering earlier times in their relationship.
“Fools rush in where angels fear to tread”, a quote from alexander pope 's an essay on criticism. Fools often engage in reckless and rash behavior. This can frequently be mistaken for the heroic traits of selfless and courageousness. This is the case in the novel the pearl. Kino plays the fool in John Steinbeck 's The Pearl because Kino blindly trusts the people and things around him, assumes The Pearl itself will solve all of his problems, and does not think his actions through.
Stephen King in his The Stand makes a crow the emissary for Satan . Earlier in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven we have a species of crow seducing us into evil . The crow then is the archetype for evil in Western literature. Yet we should never lose sight of the fact that in Friedrich Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals we have the Kantian categorical imperatives good and bad blur.
The psychologist, Carl Jung, says that universal characters reside within the collective unconscious of people around the world. These characters are called archetypes. According to Jung, every story has similar archetypes to each other. The Pearl, written by John Steinbeck, also has archetypes. There are many different archetypes in the novella, The Pearl.
That evil spirit showed up several times, it even mentions that the servants were aware of the presence of this evil spirit and they would call David to play the harp.
The Song of Songs in the bible has been known for many different interpretations. Historically, the most common method to interpret the Song of Songs has an allegory of the Father’s love for Israel. Many churches viewed the book as a picture of Christ’s love for both His bride and His church. This interpretation has been known to be the best interpretation because of the New Testament references Christ made about His relationship with the bride and the church . (Hindson & Towns, 2013).
Dear, future self The Pearl is a story that shows another perspective of life from a fisherman named Kino. The book has themes we hardly think about such as the impact of perseverance, the benefits of education, and the roles of gender. I will never know how fate has brought me on this earth, but I do know that I have choices in life. Fate gave me the choice to be: selfish, disappointed, and quite forever or the exact opposite by being: determined, persistent, and caring. The pearl makes the reader realize how fate lets Kino live a rollercoaster life which made me think of how fate impacted my own life.
