The Calm, Unsuspecting Killer
Nobody feared him, nobody knew him, nobody knew his victims. He was a loner, his victims were loners, and nobody knew they were missing. His victims never stayed in the same place for long periods, so when they went missing, nobody noticed. They were on the fringe of society(“Jeffrey” 3). He knew what he was doing and continued to do it. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was one of the most horrific serial killers of all time, beginning in childhood to early adulthood, leading to his murders, and eventually his trial and death.
Jeffrey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 21, 1960, to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. He seemed like an average child until around four when he had surgery to correct a double hernia(“Jeffrey” 3). Friends and family noticed a change that negatively affected him. He became more shy and distant. It did not help that when Jeffrey was six, the family moved to Bath, Ohio, where he was sexually molested by a neighbor(Newton 59). This event went unreported. The same year his mother, Joyce, gave birth to Jeff’s younger brother, David(Lassieur 87).

The trial began in January of 1992 with an eight-foot wall of bulletproof glass around where Dahmer would be sitting to reduce the risk of him getting shot(pink 10). However, his short time in prison was strange. For example, he would make fake limbs out on his lunch, and eat them.
After his failed attempt at college Jeffery enlisted into the military who later discharged him after two years of service in Germany. In 1982 he moved into his grandmothers house in Wisconsin. He tried to work at various jobs but could never hold one down. His next murder was Steven Tuami, after him Jeffery murdered James Doxetor in 1988, then Richard Q, also in 1988.

His mother was always very depressed and his father was frequently absent due to work (Cheng, Jentzen, Johnson, Stormo, and Teggatz 1994.) Jeffrey Dahmer was severely mentally ill for most of his lifetime. Since he grew up in a troubled home and showed many habits of a serial killer even in his younger years due to his love to dissect roadkill and dissolve them in chemicals his father supplied. He continuously struggled with his sexuality, this frustrated him and fueled his anger, and he took up drinking as a solace. In February of 1992 Dahmer was finally sentences nearly a year after he was caught.
Dahmer later disposed of the body. In 1988, Dahmer had attempted to drug and kill a 13 year old boy. He had brought the boy to his apartment, attempting to drug him with sleeping pills. Luckily, for the time being, the boy had escaped, and told the police of Dahmer’s assault. Dahmer was arrested and given a probation sentence of 5 years, however, he continued to kill during this period of time.

People know of Jeffery Dahmer and have heard his name but haven't researched his background story. Personally being interested in murder mystery shows I thought this would be a perfect topic for me Tracing back his childhood makes you realize from the beginning signs of a serial killer like himself. there was a awful smell coming from his apartment. He had invited a police officer into his house to have a drink, the officer smelled something grossed later they came back and put him into custody. The officers had gone through boxes to find disturbing things in there such as: human heads and three bags of organs, chemicals skulls, painted skulls, skeleton, dried scalp, tools various videos blood soaked mattress and blood splatters and a King James Bible and they went through box after box collecting evidence. A serial killer can best be described as a person who commits a series or murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. A disturbing fact about serial killers is that most of them should be eminently identifiable. Serial killers commit their acts specifically in one place, therefore, give the residents of the community, its police force, and even their neighbors ample opportunity to find out what they are. The fact they are not caught is attributed to three factors. The first being the characteristics of the victims, which in Jeffrey Dahmer's case he prayed mostly on gay men.
