John Proctor As A Tragic Hero In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

In Act Three of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, John Proctor admits he has committed adultery with Abigail motivated in trying to save his wife, while his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, lies about why she kicked Abigail from their house to protect her and her husbands privacy. I feel as though John’s actions were justified and Elizabeth’s actions were not. John Proctor was trying to get the court to see Abigail was a terrible, unsaintly fraud in her claims of being witched. John tells the court that his wife, who has never told a lie, would concur to the affair accusations brought against Abigail. Before the play has even begun, we are informed that John has cheated on his wife, Elizabeth, with Abigail Williams who was a maid in his house. Proctor, already starting to feel some guilt, says to Abigail, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with. ”(17) while describing the affair they had. Proctor even says to her that even though “I may think of you softly from time to time.

He is trying to make up for committing adultery with Abigail when Abigail was working for Elizabeth. Even though John did at one point have feelings for Abigail, throughout the rest of the story he only worries about what happens to his family and his wife.

Proctor tries to tell the judges that Abigail wants to replace his wife.

He goes from an individual who is prideful in himself, to someone who believes that showing loyalty and respect for others is superior to being a selfish person. John Proctor is unwilling to confront the court at all because he knows the legitimacy of the court and does not want to admit to his mistakes. John struggles to do what he knows is right, which is to reveal his affair to the court. This information could expose Abigail as a liar and show that she is falsely accusing Elizabeth strictly because of her jealousy.

John Proctor, one of the main characters in The Crucible, is remorseful, candid, and industrial. He is very determined to make his farm as successful as possible. Proctor becomes truthful at the end when they want him to confess; moreover, he regrets what he did with Abigail Williams. His wife, Elizabeth Proctor, is not willing to condone the situation. A tragic hero, according to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, demonstrates great bravery and courage in the midst of adversity. He presents himself as a good person and good leader. However, this hero experiences a downfall due to his own pride, or hubris. As a result, the hero faces nemesis, his fate due to their tragic flaw, and evokes a catharsis from the audience (). The nature of John and Elizabeth’s relationship is unhealthy because their words and actions towards each other reveal a sense of hostility, mistrust, and lack of affection.

When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.
