At the end of the Salem witch trials, there were a number of accused still waiting to either confess to witchcraft or be hanged. John Proctor was among those accused along with his pregnant wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Danforth, the judge, allowed Elizabeth to speak with John before the next hangings in order to plead with him for his life. Danforth allowed Elizabeth to speak to John because he thought that since she was his wife, she could convince him to confess to witchcraft. John was a well-respected man in the town of Salem and they thought that if John confessed, the others would follow in his footsteps. I also believe that Danforth knew that John was innocent and he thought that seeing his pregnant wife would make him want to confess.

Danforth knew right away it was a lie for John had already confess to the crime of lechery. This makes John and his entire group look like fools for trying to call Abigail and her group liers. Danforth had no empathy for the Proctors and sends them both to jail. The fact that Elizabeth tried to lie for John in court presented that she still cared for him. Towards the end of they play we find out that Elizabeth is pregnant while she is in jail and it is a reason for her to live another year.
Everyday people go out to explore and wonder the community with different reputations, not knowing death could happen at any second. Whether you are walking around the block, to crossing the street. People worry about upholding positive reputations, because they have strong beliefs to be well known for their future generations. John Proctor did not want to raise his kids and live under a negative reputation, even though they already had a bad reputation, leading his to making the wrong decision in taking his life to protect his reputation. By doing this, John left behind his pregnant wife and kids, left behind an even worse reputation for his family, and wasn't able to prove Abigail guilty.
I agree that the decision John Proctor made was appropriate because he really did attempt to save his life for his family. He had been locked away in a jail for some several time while being tortured and not able to see his pregnant wife nor children. He confessed to his affair with Abigail to the court, and also confessed to witchcraft which was not true. When he asked Elizabeth what he should do, she told him that “[she] cannot judge” (Miller 135) him. She wanted him living, but she also wanted him to make his own decision.
Elizabeth's refusal to judge John Proctor comes from a pure religious sentiment that was untainted by a thirst for power. Elizabeth, through the book, mentions that the only person capable of judging John Proctor is himself, a believe that comes from the idea that John is responsible for upholding the integrity of his puritan pride and name in front of God and himself. In other words, Elizabeth understands that John must forgive himself for his own sin, as her forgiveness has no meaning regarding John's guilt in his own eyes or in the eyes of God. Guilt is emotional torture that transforms one's psychological operation. A word John Proctor lived by, integrity, which stands for honest and moral. The religious background adds to more for their moral compass so they will go to heaven and not be sinful. John Proctor, Deputy Governor Danforth, and Abigail Williams were worried about their reputation in town, and they were willing to commit many sins and harm others to prevent this from happening. To begin with, John Proctor was seen as a good citizen. He was well-respected among his neighbors and other people in Salem because of his upright morals. He had an affair with his old servant, Abigail Williams. He tried to keep this hidden from the people to keep his good name.

The end of the Crucible is very suspenseful when the protagonist, John Proctor, is faced with choosing between confessing to a lie or dying for the truth. At first, Proctor is hesitant and signs the papers, confessing himself to evil, but before the signed paper is collected by the court, he tears it apart and is sentenced to death. This was his best option, for it stopped him from living a remorseful life. His decision to tear apart the signed confession was the most correct not only for himself but for his family and the community as well.

In the crucible when the girls kept blaming and persecuting the innocent people made the story feel dark and shameful. When Mary Warren accused John Proctor. When John Proctor was asked to confess, he refused. John Proctor made the right decision. John Proctor spent most of his time trying to prove his wife’s innocence.
