Monroe’s presidency was emblematic of national harmony. Coined “the Era of Good Feelings” by the Columbian Centinel, the surge of national pride from the War of 1812 and the death of the Federalist party created a sense of unity in America. The government, for one of the first times in its young history, devoted itself to the nation rather than to divided regions. During this period, nationalism manifested in several forms, including economic, judicial, and diplomatic nationalism. Each facet of nationalism served to unify the country as a whole and mold it into a modern society. Economic nationalism began to develop in America during Monroe’s presidency, in what became known as “the American System”. One component of this was protective …show more content…
His first major nationalistic victories was the Rush-Bagot agreement, which demilitarized the Canadian border. This was followed in suit by the Anglo-American Accords, which renewed the American right to fish off of Canada and, more importantly, established the joint occupation of the Oregon territory between England and the United States. John Quincy Adams continued to pursue the expansion of the country, negotiating in the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819 (Goldfield et al. 255-256). This shrewd negotiation and unprecedented expansion caused the country to emerge as a global influence. James Monroe himself also furthered diplomatic nationalism during his term. In the famous Monroe Doctrine, he established that “‘The American continents … are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers’”, and furthermore asserted that the United States should have a separate sphere of influence from Europe (“Monroe Doctrine, 1823”). With this statement, Monroe officially asserted America was to be independent of European affairs, firmly cementing the idea that the United States was a nation, and not a
America entered into the Era of Good Feelings which was a time of one party rule and peace. Democratic Republicans ruled the national government and voters had to chose a candidate from this political party. Culturally America didn’t change as slavery still in the south, industry still in the north, and western lands are still unknown. However, Henry Clay’s American System created a compromise between all regions with Northern industry, Southern Slavery, and Western Farmers. Therefore, The Missouri compromise increased sectionalism and brought economic differences to each region of the United States.
The beginning of the United States was given a self-government that took it to a new heists of political and economic systems that would soon be established. The Election of 1800 had revolutionized the American system known as” The Revolution of 1800” which became a turning point resulting in a non-violent, peaceful transition of power in politics and foreign policies. The Election of 1800 consisted of two dominated political power, known as the Federalist and Anti-Federalist who both sought for unity among the people. However, the Federalist soon began losing their stance in the government because they supported a strong national government that distrusted the people in a ruling government.
According to our book, the American System is an economic plan based on the idea that the federal government should encourage economic enterprise. The American System was stemmed from young Democratic-Republican who falsely supported Jefferson 's idea of a small federal government but actually preferred a large government. The goal of the new American System was to assist the united States in becoming self-sufficient economically, while spurring massive market growth throughout the nation. The leaders of this group were Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. They believed that the federal government should encourage economic enterprise in three ways: first, the federal government needed to create roads and canals which would be considered internal
In 1819, John Quincy Adams asserted that the United States had prerogative to all of North America. He thought it was America’s destiny to expand to the Pacific Ocean. Many Americans had agreed with him by the 1840s. The Manifest Destiny had an important role in the Election of 1844. The Democrats had chosen James K. Polk for President, a man who wasn’t really known, while the Whigs chose Henry Clay for President.
The War of 1812 was an armed conflict between the United States and the British Empire. In an attempt to cut off supplies from reaching the enemy, both sides attempted to block the United States from trading with the other. Significantly, the British restricted the American trade since the British feared that it was detrimental with their war with France. Importantly, the British wanted to set up an Indian state in the Midwest, which is why thousands of Native Americans fought on the side of the British. The Americans condemned the British Empire restricting their trade and taking sailors to serve on the British side.
His most famous piece of legislature, the Monroe Doctrine, came at a time when Eurasia was in a state of turmoil. In 1821, the Russian Tzar, Alexander I, declared that any territory above the 51st parallel would belong solely to Russia. This was an enormous threat for the sovereignty of the young United States since Russia colonized and governed Alaska since 1784 and had begun expanding southward toward the Oregon territory. Moreover, the Tzar banned any foreign ships from coming closer than 115 miles off the coast of the “Russian America”. and claimed a monopoly on fur hunting, fishing, and all trading in that region.
Following the Spanish exploration of the Oregon territory, several countries claimed the newly explored region. Due to the region’s abundance of beavers, the interest to claim the region increased. To settle the dispute, US and Great Britain created the treaty of 1818 which allowed both Americans and Britons to have access to the Oregon country. Following the treaty, both countries decided on dividing the region and accepting 49° north as the boundary. America’s share of Oregon country included the present day states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming.
Countless citizens in the 1840s and 1850s, feeling a sense of mission, believed that Almighty God had “manifestly’’ destined the American people for a hemispheric career. They would spread their uplifting and ennobling democratic institutions over at least the entire continent. Land greed and ideals—“empire’’ and “liberty’’—were thus conveniently conjoined. 14. What political party cost Henry Clay the popular vote in the state of New York, & what is ironic about Polk’s election in 1844 regarding this party’s position on Texas?
Senses of nationalism were still evident and showed through America’s celebrations over their victories. Even after several years from when Revolutionary War ended, the people of America still celebrated it in 1819 (Doc C), showing how Americans can come together despite their differences. With America as a whole, the Rush-Bagot Agreement, Adams-Onis Treaty, and Monroe Doctrine were actions that were greatly supported by the people and would further assist in the advancement of the country (Doc H), providing great confidence for the people of America with their conflicts against Europeans. Another factor to America’s sense of national pride is the attempt to promote general welfare by uniting the country with a system of roads and canals made by John C. Calhoun (Doc B) despite his plan being shot down by the government. Even so, these events undeniably contributed to the existing senses of pride and unity within the nation.
Nostra heard about the Monroe Doctrine and had some idea to change it up. Ithad no more of it to be used solely for economic dominance and imperialism by the United States, but in conjunction with its twenty neighbors, to defend the collective security of the Western Hemisphere. But changing the Monroe Doctrine only changed some of its power. Still, the Monroe Doctrine could still have advance American economic and political interests in the Western
The Monroe Doctrine was a speech given in 1823 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States, to the U.S. Congress concerning European presence in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe was becoming continuously concerned about European influence in the region. While the primary audience for this message was Congress, the intended audience was all European powers, including Russia, and Latin America. The events in Latin America before and after the Spanish-American War will be used as an example of the imperial reach by the U.S. The United States, ironically, became an imperial power through its mission outlined in the Monroe Doctrine to end European colonialism and imperialism.
The Era of Good Feelings, beginning in 1816 with the election of James Monroe as president, directly followed the War of 1812, was a time of nationalism, hope and and confidence in the United States. However, in the shadow of this national pride, different areas of the country began to shift apart in different ways, opening the door to domestic tension. The Era of Good Feeling was both a time of economic growth and political change for the country. This was caused by a surge in nationalistic feelings throughout the United States, as well as growing sectional tensions. The War of 1812 made the American people feel as though they should be aggressive in foreign affairs, which led to the introduction of a protective tariff and the Monroe Doctrine.
The period from 1815 to 1825 is commonly referred to as the “Era of Good Feelings”. Following the collapse of the Federalist political party the Republicans ran unopposed and attempted to reach agreements with previous Federalist dominated states granting the period this title. The Republican Party factionalized as a result of no opposition resulting in sectionalism, which led to various political and economic issues. This period being called, “The Era of Good Feelings,” is an incorrect title because of the widespread panic prevalent in the United States during this time. Document A, which is a letter from John Randolph to Congress, clearing expresses concerns about sectionalism.
The immense growth of industry and an increasing drive to move further westward from 1815 to 1860 marked a time that would forever change the fabric of America. Economic and territorial expansion would further drive sectionalism within the nation and disrupt national unity to a nearly unfathomable extent. Watt and Boulton experimenting with steam in England, Whitney combining wood and steel and creating the cotton gin, Slater dividing factory work among men, Morse spanning a still growing nation with the telegraph, Field expanding transportation and linking the market with steamboats– these men and many more crafted a mighty revolution of industry. This great growth in economics marked the fall of agriculture in the great race for economic
The Monroe Doctrine and the ideology of Manifest Destiny played a significant role in the U.S. policy towards Latin America and the Caribbean in the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century through Imperialism. The Monroe Doctrine and the Manifest Destiny was the byproduct of the Imperialistic system. Imperialism aimed to control over a territory, population, and resources to gain economic benefits and to gain political strength through military tactics. The Monroe doctrine and the Manifest Destiny was an oxymoron with American democratic values. The Monroe doctrine and the Manifest Destiny greatly influenced the outcome of the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War and the Panama Canal with the backing of American corporations.
